NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's domestic car sales growth slowed sharply in January from a year ago, clocking up annual expansion of 9 percent, and analysts said only new models and cheaper loans were likely to fuel a pick up in demand. India sold 113,899 cars in January, up from 104,501 in the same month a year ago, when sales had jumped 24 percent, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed on Friday. "The last few months have seen muted sales and the trend may continue unless new vehicles are introduced and finance issues are tackled," Dilip Chenoy, SIAM's director general, said. The meeting of the Union Cabinet scheduled for today to take final decision on increasing petrol and diesel prices, in view of spurt in international oil prices, has been postponed. "It will meet shortly," a government official said. The meeting was indicated to be held this afternoon to consider raising petrol price by Rs 2 a litre and diesel by Re 1 a litre together with some cut in excise duty on the two fuel. Srinivasan, the most senior official in India's oil ministry, told Reuters in an interview in London that his ministry's proposal to the ministerial panel included a cut in the excise duties on petrol and diesel along with a price rise. The cut in duties, which rank among the highest in the world at 52 percent for petrol and 34 percent for diesel, would help cushion the blow for retail consumers and alleviate the finances of state-run oil firms that have been selling fuel below cost. Current crude prices combined with India's high dependence on imported fuel is leading to an unsustainable situation, it said. I keep hearing of fuel cell technology being "right around the corner", but had yet to see real production units. Voller Energy seems to actually be producing something that is usable and which you might actually be able to buy when it launches commercially in 2008. Designed to run from LPG, propane or butane, they are already aiming for the marine and RV markets, among others.
This might be a technology that fits well with my timeframe, although costs will be of course interesting.

The cost of Euro IV fuel, which permits 50 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur in gasoline, is 0.4 yuan per litre higher than Euro III fuel, which permits 150 ppm. The higher cost for Euro IV standard fuel will not be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices, however, as the National Development and Reform Commission has not granted the necessary permit, the Beijing News said, quoting an official with the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce.

Tata Motors, who recently revealed their plans for an inexpensive plastic car, has gone one step ahead and announced their plans for a hydrogen car. This is in collaboration with ISRO, India's space agency.According to Madhavan Nair, ISRO Chairman, the hydrogen car is scheduled for a 2008 completion and mass production of the car is to be determined.
