Germany’s steel trade union on Tuesday rejected an offer from employers of a 3.5 percent wage hike with a contract duration of at least 16 months for workers in the north-west of the country.
Workers have already staged temporary stoppages in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Bremen involving around 10,000 people.

Call this news of the weird, or something. Otto Pfister, head coach of Africa Cup of National finalist Cameroon (they play Egypt in the final tomorrow), told Germany's kicker.de he has been offered the job of U.S. Men's National Team coach. The job has been held by Bob Bradley for over a year. By nearly all accounts, Bradley has done a fine job. Pfister told kicker he would choose between the U.S. job and the South Korea spot, which had also been offered to him, but that he preferred the U.S. one because he wouldn't have to use an interpreter (I'm assuming he speaks English). All a bit bizarre but worth keeping an eye on nonetheless...
In an interview with the German newspaper, Der Spiegel, Kerem Caliskan reviewed the situation of Turkish people in Germany. The recent fires in Ludwigshaven in which several Turkish people were killed or hurt has aroused feelings among many people in Turkey that neo-Nazi right wingers were behind the episode. Caliskan interviewed two girls who claim [...]

Facebook today announced the first step in a broad plan to internationalize the site with translation into Spanish. German and French versions of Facebook are expected in the coming weeks. Nearly 1,500 Spanish-speaking users on Facebook chose to be part of the effort and translated the site from English to Spanish in less than four weeks.Current users who want to view Facebook in Spanish can change their language preference from their account settings. Beginning on Monday, Feb. 11, any person who goes to http://www.facebook.com/ from a Spanish-speaking country will see the site in Spanish. Facebook currently has more than 2.8 million active users in Latin America and Spain."Over 60 percent of Facebook users are now outside of the U.S., and many live in countries where English is not the primary language," said Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook. "Our goal has always been to allow people to use Facebook in their native language so we built an application to enable users to par
A series of German salary renewal negotiations has gotten off to a brisk start this year amid strikes in several sectors. On Feb. 6, steelworkers laid down tools following a call by the IG Metall trade union. Three hundred workers stopped work temporarily at a site belonging to sector leader ThyssenKrupp. Similar actions were expected [...]
BERLIN (Reuters) - Nine people, including five children, have been killed in a fire in a house in the western German city of Ludwigshafen, police said on Monday. A further 24 were taken to hospital, two of whom were in a life-threatening condition, and it was possible that more bodies would be found in the house, which was in danger of collapse, a police spokesman said. It was unclear what had caused the fire, the spokesman said, adding that 52 people, mostly Turkish citizens, were registered as living in the house. The number of fatalities could have been higher had a group of police, firemen and other emergency service personnel not been celebrating carnival nearby, the spokesman said. They helped catch children thrown from the upper floors of the building.
Daniel Craig might be known for his suave figure in ‘Casino Royale’, but his musical taste is completely opposite to his super-cool image. The actor prefers listening to crazy German heavy metal and showtunes from Grease, instead of wooing the ladies on the set of new Bond movie ‘Quantum Of Solace.’ “I have about 5,000 songs on my iPod. It’s very eclectic - anything from Kate Bush to the Raconteurs,” The Sun quoted Craig, as saying. “I love iPod’s shuffle. But it can be nerve-racking if anyone is around. When something dodgy comes on, like Grease, you’re like, ‘Nooo!’ and dive to switch to the next tune. “I also quite like German heavy metal - like the band Die Toten Hosen,” he added. (ANI)
Germany’s refusal to send their Afghanistan-based troops into the volatile Southern provinces is symptom of much larger issues. By standing on the sidelines, the Germans join so-called NATO members Italy, Turkey, and that fierce-fighting nation France in supporting the War on Terror in words and little action. While the Northern part of the war-torn nation cannot be considered ‘safe’ by any means, the decision to keep the much-needed military and equipment support away from those actually doing the fighting in the South – especially the United States, Canada, Britain, and others – has shown a growing rift in the NATO alliance over the issue. Purely political, the governing bodies in the countries in question have failed to get the message of the necessity of the war to their respective peoples. They fear losing power over fully supporting an unpopular war (made unpopular because of the peoples lack of knowledge regarding the issue), and instead are trying to walk a fine li
US secretary of Defense Robert Gates has sent a letter to his German counterpart demanding more German engagement in Afghanistan. In the past Germany’s response has been -nein. German Bundesliga teams were back in action for the first time in more than a month today, with a quartet of games in the DFB Pokal Round of 16 on the docket. Half were upsets, with a third turning on three goals scored in the waning minutes. Table toppers Bayern Munich were the only favorites spared the ignominy of defeat. The Bavarian side saw off third-division minnows Wuppertaler SV Borussia, though not without a challenge; at halftime the teams were tied 2-2 before Bayern won 5-2 on three second half goalsThe biggest game of the day was undoubtedly the Borussia Dortmund versus Werder Bremen match-up, which die Borussia took by a 2-1 score. Dortmund is traditionally very strong at home, but have had a rough season and currently sit 10th, so the result was still surprising. Werder are second in the Bundesliga and that only on goal difference. Of course I now feel perfectly vindicated dropping them from the Top 25 this week! The largest upset was probably second division club 1899 Hof
Continuing from my last post on Germany that was one of my most memorable European trips. Well these were the Hotels in Germany and my Hotel in Berlin where i spent some memoraible moments with my Girl. Well lets not get into those details as i've already told about them in my last blog. Whose link is given above. You can read they whole story from there. Here in this blog im going to tell you about the cultural events that take place in Germany. What i like most about German Cultural events is that the calendar is fully loaded with annual fairs, festivals, concerts and parties. In January, Fasching is celebrated. It is a bawdy kind of six-week-long extravaganza of street parties and balls.February, The Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival), the world’s second largest, is held in February. March, Lent comes to an end in March with Starkbierzeit, a time for quaffing strong brews.April, April sees Festage (Festival Days) a host of gala concerts and operas held o

German academics believe they have solved the centuries-old mystery behind the identity of the "Mona Lisa" in Leonardo da Vinci's famous portrait.Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant, Francesco del Giocondo, has long been seen as the most likely model for the sixteenth-century painting. But art historians have often wondered whether the smiling woman may actually have been da Vinci's lover, his mother or the artist himself. Now experts at the Heidelberg University library say dated notes scribbled in the margins of a book by its owner in October 1503 confirm once and for all that Lisa del Giocondo was indeed the model for one of the most famous portraits in the world."All doubts about the identity of the Mona Lisa have been eliminated by a discovery by Dr. Armin Schlechter," a manuscript expert, the library said in a statement on Monday.Until then, only "scant evidence" from sixteenth-century documents had been available. "This left lots of room for interpretation a

On Monday I wrote about the anti-immigrant and anti-youth rhetoric that Roland Koch, the extremely conservative governor of the German state of Hesse, has been subjecting the German public to. In our spare time, the odd hour of sobriety as well as professionally, we're not only "festive boozing consultants" (with carefully hand-crafted-in-the-garage business cards to prove it) but self appointed industry analysts taking the sector's pulse and checking for slow, shallow breathing of the type the gentlemen pictured here might experience if they kept up this activity for a protracted period. With the buzz from 2007 wearing off and the promise of a brighter and more prosperous 08 (our jobs have yet to be outsourced to humorists in India) we Shark Guys were ready to stagger into the New Year without tripping and falling on the panic button. However we’ve just smashed the protective glass case and wrapped a towel around a hand to stop the bleeding. This is the same hand that would’ve ordinarily been extended— palm out, to demand a traffic cop-like halt to a disturbing trend post haste, or slapped down in a Jeopardy-style buzz-in: "What is beer?: the correct response to the cl

Probably the hottest pictorial of Rihanna in the German Edition of the FHM Magazine!Rihanna gets all wet and cleavagelicious in the January 2008 German Edition of the FHM! Well what do you want more… this is simply the best thing Rihanna could offer to all of her fans! I don’t have to write anything about her, she’s that good yes! First of she’s showing of her super boobs, and if that’s not enough for you then she thought of spicing up the atmosphere a little bit, so she gets all wet… damn what imagination… what vision… I truly want to meet the photoshoot director, and shake his hand! I bet he’s male, and probably he’s single… just like me… but that’s not important! Important is his genius idea of having Rihanna immortalized the way he did! I always knew that Germans have a weakness for sexy kinky stuff, but not like this! I hope that this dude will call Jessica Simpson, Kim Kardashian and Lucy Pinder for a similar photoshoot two! Can you even think of that? A

Updating an earlier post on B-List Yanks abroad, I finally have the full story (hehe) on Marcus Storey and his status with German Oberliga (fourth division) side TuS 1906 Hueslingen. The University of North Carolina grad was apparently acquired by Hueslingen at the start of the season but never joined the team. That will change next month, according to Storey's German lawyer/agent Bernd Floris Flor with whom I exchanged emails this week. Flor wrote that Storey will be eligible to play for Hueslingen starting in January. The club was late in submitting the proper requests with Major League Soccer, who apparently still held Storey's rights last summer? Can that be true? The Chicago native was the 20th overall pick in the 2005 SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew. He was traded to the Houston Dynamo prior to the 2006 season and then reportedly cut in the 2007 pre-season.

German Chancellor Angela Merket came out strongly against the vision of French President Nicolas Sarkozy for creation of a Mediterranean Union. Three months ago, workers at a German bicycle company occupied their factory to protest its closure. Now, they've started production of a limited edition "strike bike" to prove the company's viability and without a boss or manager in sight. The bicycles are being assembled by the 135 former employees of the Bike Systems company in Nordhausen in the German state of Thuringia. Production started on Monday, and by Friday, the group hopes to have the limited run of 1,800 pre-ordered bikes ready for shipping throughout Germany and Europe. The workers are getting support from the anarcho-syndicalist union FAU and some local organizations as well as from organizations and individuals from across Germany and the EU. "The mood is great," said one of the occupying workers, "We really hope that we will be able to continue to produce bikes on a permanent basis." The workers have occupied the Bike Systems factory since July, after the company was asset stripped, closed down and declared insolvent.
