Traditional Greek coffeeWhile in Greece I couldn't stomach the local coffee very much. If anyone has ever tried "Greek style" coffee you'll know what I mean. It's a mean brew, all thick with a rich sediment that forms on he bottom of the cup. I personally believe it's an acquired taste and one that I'm not really keen on enjoying. Still, every house I went to, I was offered this rich brew and I politely accepted. Greek Iced Coffee or "Frappe" However, I did get to enjoy the local iced coffee otherwise known as "frappe". Dark, rich, cold with a golden foamy top this drink is very popular especially in the summer months. People sit at cafes for hours with one of these sipping it very slowly enjoying its rich, intense flavours. The cruel irony for me is, that's it's made with instant coffee!!! Shock! Horror! I couldn't believe it. Apparently this is the best way to achieve the golden foam on top. While I believe instant coffee does serve its purpose (in extreme emergencies) I r

Today's (or to be exact yesterday's) top Greek story is the followingSearch Operation Underway05 Nov 2007 15:14:00 (Last updated: 05 Nov 2007 21:27:07)Sources: ΝΕΤ, ΑNA-ΜPAThe police have launched an extensive search operation in Zoniana, Rethymno, after a convoy of police cars on their way to the village to search for drugs was attacked Monday by gunmen. Three special guards serving on Crete were injured. Greek Police chief Anastasios Dimoshakis and Police Inspector for Southern Greece Lieutenant General Christos Drakopoulos have already arrived at the crime scene to coordinate the operations. The whole area has been cordoned off, with the policemen scouring the place. Special guard Efstathios Lazaridis, 25, shot in the neck, underwent a surgery at the Heraklion Hospital. The other two special guards, who were transferred to the Rethymnon Hospital, suffered minor injuries. While visiting the two special guards, Dimoshakis termed the incident as unprecedented for the Greek standar
The Acropolis...a sight to beholdWhy hello! Its been a while. Yours truly has been holidaying in Greece and lapping up every minute of it. I've mainly been visiting friends and relatives in the Peloponnese and checking out a lot of ancient ruins. There are many food adventures to re tell and lots of photographs of my quick visit. Today I provide a sample, but look out over the next few days as I provide a more detailed description of my holiday. The stunning coast of the Mediterranean...viewed from the port city of Napflio
A resurgent Romanian national team scored arguably its biggest victory in a decade by beating Holland on a 71st minute tap-in by Steaua Bucharest defender Dorin Goian. With the victory, Romania is all but assured a spot in Austria and Switzerland. Victor Piturca's side are three points clear of Holland and five points clear of third-placed Bulgaria with only three games remaining, but more importantly the Carpathians have an easy schedule the rest of the way: at Luxembourg Wednesday, at Bulgaria Nov. 17, before concluding with Albania at home Nov. 21.Another big winner from Saturday night's action was Greece. The defending champions edged Bosnia 3-2 and are now four points clear of archrival Turkey ahead of their Wednesday night meeting at Istanbul. The Turks now have their backs to the wall, after only managing a draw against Moldova. Croatia, England, Poland and Scotland all held serve in crucial home games to strengthen their positions. Oh yeah, and Germany became the first team to

As a Greek, it is with great pain that I follow the latest news from the blazes that burned out of control for a week, killing more than 70 people. The Envisat image taken on 30 August 2007 captures the devastation to Greece's landscape. We should not remain simply spectators of the disaster. The victims need hands-on solidarity from everyone. I help Greece is an initiative aiming at mobilizing the public both in Greece and abroad to collect money that will be given to the afflicted citizens in the fire-stricken regions. Any contribution made is valuable, regardless of the nature and amount of the financial aid offered.Further reporting is available at the European Space Agency and EUTube.

I discovered Meze, Small Bites Big Flavors from the Greek Table in my wife’s cookbook collection a few months ago. The impact that just flipping through the pages had on me was intense, immediate and life altering. I had to try some of this, and soon!
Unfortunately, soon wasn’t soon enough. With everything that’s been going on in our lives, this book has sat on my desk, forlorn and forgotten for far too long. It’s happy tales of Greek lifestyles and traditions, recipes and reminiscing tone all but relegated to obscurity… Until today.
For those who don’t know, meze is the Greek equivalent of Tappas. Small portions of food absolutely loaded with flavor, but each celebrating the main ingredient. The ingredients are generally simple, and while not necessarily something that every American household might have on hand, they’re all fairly easy to find in local markets now.
The first recipe that caught my eye when I flipped open the cover was
