Providing your family with a healthy diet can be challenging in today's world. The stores are full of foods that have the nutrition processed out of them. Fast foods are everywhere. If you are willing to look, however, there are good whole food and health food stores as well. Look for foods that are high in fiber and nutrients and low in chemical additives and sugars. Some suggestions for finding excellent health foods and snacks online: http://www.myforevergreen.org/stevenbrazis/home.html http://www.sunfood.com Essential Nutritious Food Children are in their growing stages and therefore require foods from each food group to maintain proper health. Include carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in every meal. Normally, a child's diet has a higher concentration of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates contain starches and sugars, some harmful and some essential. Try to emphasize the complex carbohydrates found in vegetables and fruits as opposed to the starchy carbohydrates found in pasta and breads.
Last week, I received an SMS from Doc Emer informing me of a breakfast EB in Makati. Well, I'm not exactly a morning and breakfast person but I said I will make extra effort to attend for the love of blogkadahan.
A day before Valentine's, I was rushed off for the EB venue, a bit late (well ok, it was more than 30 minutes) but I was glad they were still in the middle of breakfast when I arrived.
I've been scouring local retail stores and the Internet, looking for software deals. My daughter received a "pre-owned" laptop as an early graduation gift, but it needs reformatting something fierce. Unfortunately, the Windows OS disks did not come with the laptop. Before I will allow her to connect the laptop to our network and the Internet, the machine must be reformatted. I was looking around online for prices on Windows XP (which we decided she would use), and was appalled at the cost of the operating system! I was so, so tempted to just install Ubuntu (which is free)! But for my daughter's sake, I can't; a lot of her programs wouldn't work and she is accustomed to XP. Retail stores still had this seven-year OS for $200! My eyeballs were a-popping! I surfed around eBay, and prices were lower... but to be honest, I'm not terribly keen on eBay, especially when it comes to electronics and software. You just can't be sure that it's the real thing until you buy it. Too risky for this ca
Since busy schedules can make the morning hours a juggling act, sitting down to a leisurely meal may not be an option. The result could mean polishing off a low-fat muffin in three bites, downing a breakfast bar in the car, or slurping up that smoothie while getting the kids on the bus. And, even if the food you choose is healthy, you may not be getting the full benefits and satisfaction you should. How come? It can take 20 minutes for the brain to realize that the stomach is full. When we've had enough to eat, a hormone known as cholecystokinin is released in the intestines, sending its signal to the brain. It's a process that takes some time. So if you scarf down your food, you might load up on a lot more calories before that time lapses (maybe feeling the need to reach for another muffin or stop by the vending machine mid-morning) than you will if you bide your time. What's the solution for the breakfast eater on the move? Stop off for a portable breakfast, but take the time to savor
1. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables -- try five or more servings a day.2. Eat a variety of grain products and complex carbohydrate foods. Focus on whole grains and legumes.3. Choose low-fat and fat-free dairy products every day (two to three servings).4. Eat a variety of protein foods. Don't just include one protein type; balance your intake of lean protein sources such as fish, skinless poultry and lean meats. Include fish varieties that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, mackerel, trout and sardines. Vegetable protein sources count, too.5. Limit foods high in saturated fat and trans fat and/or cholesterol -- mostly found in products such as full-fat milk, fatty meats, tropical oils, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, desserts, sweets and many packaged foods. If you use added fat, choose monounsaturated fats -- such as olive oil and canola oil. By eliminating high saturated fat foods, you are also cutting down on c
Researchers now say that some chocolate can be good for your heart. The question is: Should you indulge your chocolate cravings or save the calories? Chocolate is made from beans that contain plant chemicals called flavanols, which are antioxidants that may reduce blood platelet stickiness and blood clots. One study found that those with a diet rich in cocoa powder and dark chocolate had lower oxidation levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and higher total levels of HDL (good ) cholesterol. Don't buy the chocolate farm just yet--the stuff is dense in calories and fat. If you eat a chocolate bar, you'll have to eat lean meats, fat-free dairy products, and eliminate all other sources of high-fat foods to help you stay within your calorie limit for the day. And not all chocolate is created equal when it comes to antioxidants. A recent study by the USDA's Agricultural Research Service found that chocolate with the most cocoa powder also had the most antioxidants. For the consumer, this means th

Well Force, a blogging bud posted about healthy people costing the health care system more.Well Force writes:"We must remember at the end of the day the objective of health care is not to save money but to save people from preventable suffering and death. Any potential savings on health care would be an added bonus. If prevention can add years to life expectancy at relatively low costs, it is worth paying for. However, this study demonstrates that estimates of health care costs in terms of life-expectancy gains need be taken into account in any long-term return on investment analysis."Notes from this study:Preventing obesity and smoking can save lives, but it doesn't save money, researchers reported Monday. It costs more to care for healthy people who live years longer, according to a Dutch study that counters the common perception that preventing obesity would save governments millions of dollars."It was a small surprise," said Pieter van Baal, an economist at the Netherlands' Nationa
Ever feel as though all your responsibilities are literally weighing you down? Caring for kids, helping out aging parents, meeting demands at work, and the list goes on. When so many people and activities vie for your time and energy, it's easy to keep pushing your own needs farther down your list of priorities. You chuck your good intentions to exercise more, plan healthier meals or attend the next Weight Watchers Meeting, and the less attention you give yourself, the more the pounds add up.The solution's easier said than done, but worth the effort. Adopt a "me first" attitude. You'll have a better outlook, more energy and greater stamina when you invest in yourself, and the improvements in how you feel and function will benefit those who rely on you. Try these self-care strategies and activities:Accept that spending time on you does not deprive others - Taking half an hour or an hour for yourself won't really hurt someone or something else so do it, and do it as often as you can. Pl
A stressful day could send anyone on the hunt for chocolate, but if you regularly reach for ice cream, cookies, or cake when you're upset or tense, it may have nothing to do with a lack of willpower. For you, carbohydrates may stimulate an especially powerful release of pleasure-producing hormones in your body. Like a nicotine addiction, such a compulsion is tough to break, but it is not impossible. Surprisingly, food can help you do it.Sweet but nutritious complex carbohydrates such as the foods listed below have the same calming effect. However, they're less harmful to your waistline, because they have fewer calories than the candy bars or other calorie-rich foods you might normally seek. You'll also be less likely to overeat throughout the rest of the day if you treat your choice like a meal instead of a mindless snack. Find a place away from your office or away from whoever is upsetting you. Then sit down, and slowly enjoy your food. Here are just some of the foods you can eat when yo

Since uncooked fish carries with it the risk for parasites, visit sushi restaurants that serve only previously frozen or cooked fish. A sushi chef combines pieces of fish, vegetables and sometimes mayonnaise or sauce on dried seaweed, rolls it up and cuts into pieces, usually four to six pieces per order. White rice is usual, although you may be able to find brown rice in some restaurants. Depending on the size of the roll, you’ll usually get about a half-cup to one cup of rice per roll, or one to two servings (100 calories per serving). Fish can be very lean, like abalone or flounder, or fattier (and healthy, too) such as tuna, salmon and mackerel. What’s fun about Japanese restaurants is sushi chefs can be as imaginative as they like, and so can you. If the menu doesn’t give a good explanation of the ingredients in the sushi roll, ask. Or tell! Tell your server that you want a roll with fish and veggies, but you don’t want added mayonnaise (commonly used in American rolls). A
1. Olive oil. Though healthier than butter, olive oil is still oil. More is not better, especially if you're watching your weight. (Don’t even think about using margarine.) 2. Honey. "It's natural." That’s a common saying. People often offer it as a reason to eat something sweet. The snack may be natural, but it still contains sugar, and not enough redeeming nutritional value to make it healthy. 3. Juice. Orange juice. Apple juice. Cranberry juice. Juice can be the quickest way to gain weight. It takes a minute -- actually less than a minute -- for most people to drink 150 calories. Gulp. Gulp. Watch your thighs expand. 4. Wheat bread. Too vague. Think it's healthy just because it’s wheat? Only whole wheat or whole grain count as healthy. 5. Milk. Whole milk, that is. The old dietary guidelines recommended at least three servings of dairy a day. They didn't differentiate between low-fat and nonfat dairy and whole milk, which is high in saturated fat and cholesterol. 6. Cheese. Ma

When you talk about sports fitness, what comes first in your mind? It is, basically, the different sports activities, right? This is because sports fitness has always been referred to as the sports itself. Generally, sports entail physical activities that are usually carried out for some “recreational” functions such as self-satisfaction, entertainment, competition, etc. It uses physical activity that is why most fitness experts regard sports as one way of staying fit and healthy. It can also be considered as one way of physical fitness; the only difference is that sports fitness is more inclined to the development of skill or ability. However, like physical fitness, sports fitness is also capable of toning down the body fats of a person. Because of its rigid and strict health program, a sports enthusiast is able to maintain a well-balanced lifestyle in order to cope up with the strenuous demands of sports. In sports, people should learn how to value their health. Otherwise
Here are 10 tips for women to stay fit and healthy: 1. Staying fit and healthy starts with a balanced diet. Know and monitor the right weight for your age. Consult your doctor to learn what food you should avoid and follow your eating discipline routines. If you are trying to lose some weight, foods with high calories should be omitted from your meals. Food with high fiber and low fat should be included a priority in your grocery list instead of red meat, sugars and fats. 2. Drink plenty of water. Drinking at least eight glasses of water everyday. This cleanses the body from impurities. It is also advised for lactating women to increase water intake to keep the body hydrated. 3. Take Vitamins and Supplements. Do not forget your Calcium supplement. Sufficient Calcium intake is beneficial for women of all ages. This has been proven to prevent having cramps and Pre-Menstrual Period (PMS) Symptoms. It also prevents Osteoporosis especially for menopausal women. Vitamin E boosts strong immun

Eating healthy is really whats it all about. Anyone thinking about doing something with their eating habits, will benefit from watching this video. It may be difficult to follow all these tips, so start slow, and do one or two at the time.
Whether you're traveling by plane, train, or automobile, check out these on-the-go eating and exercise tips. 1. Go for H20. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after long plane flights to keep your body well hydrated. Hydration may help ward off jet lag and reduce symptoms of discomfort at high-altitude destinations that may accompany travel. 2. Stay on schedule. If you normally exercise in the morning, try to do the same when you are on the road. Keeping to your regular routine as much as possible may help you stick with healthy habits. 3. Eat small. Try eating off the kids' menu, or choose appetizers, soup and salad, or half portions instead of a typical entrée. Choosing smaller servings may add up to fewer calories when choices are healthy. 4. Stock smart. If possible, get a room without a minibar or request that the hotel empty it before you arrive to reduce temptation later. Opt instead for smart choices such as fresh fruit, whole grains, and low-fat items. 5. Brown-bag it.
Consumers are so disadvantaged because reading ingredient labels often require a PhD in biochemistry! Here’s one tip - The fewer the ingredients listed, the less processed the food is. If you’re buying dried fruit, the first ingredient should be fruit, such as raisins, dates, apricots or figs, and that’s about it. It sounds as if you chose a dried fruit that's been processed with hydrogenated fat. Dried fruit is a healthy food, a good choice for energy and fiber, and naturally fat-free. Dried fruit, by weight, is higher in calories than the fresh counterpart, and although concentrated in calories, it’s also more concentrated in other nutrients, for example, although fresh grapes are not a particularly good source of iron; raisins, which are dried grapes, are rich in iron. One cup of sliced fresh plums has only 91 calories; only 1 percent of the Daily Value for iron, a cup of prunes has 406 calories and 23 percent of the DV for iron. You don’t want to eat an entire cup of prun

Nails need to be taken care of properly to ensure that your nails are healthy and look beautiful.Use nail polish remover with caution. It can dry the nails and your cuticles. Try not to repair nail enamel every day.Watch out for signs of nail infection, including redness, pain or pus. The nail plates are porous and dry quickly. Nail polishes waterproof the nails and cause the skin under them to stay wet longer. This makes them more open to infection.Be careful of some nail products. Some can cause rashes on the fingers or around the eyes since buffing or filing can cause small particles to enter the air. Some of the more damaging products are in nail hardeners.Applying artificial nails over your own are not recommended. They may look nice for a while, but they destroy the underlying nail. The chemicals and glue used are dangerous to the body, and are readily absorbed through the damaged nail and nail bed. The use of artificial nails has been known to contribute to the development of
A recent Wall Street Journal article--Wellness Programs May Face Legal Tests: Plans That Penalize Unhealthy Workers Could Get Tighter Rules--discusses the US Department of Labor’s decision to curtail the ability of employers to motivate workers to kick unhealthy habits by making health insurance more expensive for unhealthy workers than for their colleagues.Workplace wellness programs--which focus on illness prevention and chronic disease management through self-maintenance--are one key ingredient for healthcare cost control. Healthier employees tend to be happier, more motivated and more focused, which benefit their employers through reduced healthcare-related expenditures, improved productivity, lowered absenteeism and fewer on-the-job accidents. While “sticks and carrots” can help convince some employees to adhere to their wellness plan and lead healthier lifestyles, it will be ineffective or even harmful for some due to powerful psychological, physiological and situational fa

If you ever pick up a newspaper or surfed the Internet, you've certainly heard that obesity and high-fat, high-sugar diets are on the rise. All of these things are contributing factors in heart disease. If you aren't doing it already, isn't it about time to get a handle on your diet, and show your cardiovascular system some mercy? The following diet and eating habit suggestions will help set you on the road to a healthier heart.1. Eat low-fat meats - This means generally avoiding red meat, and sticking with poultry and fish. But, of course, you have to take method of preparation into consideration as well, meaning skip the fried chicken and go for grilled. Can't do without burgers? Try substituting low-fat ground turkey or soy-based veggie burgers. Fish - especially oily fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel - are an excellent part of a heart-healthy diet because they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which lower triglycerides and may help improve your overall cholesterol profile as
Introduction to Healthy FoodGoji berries are sweet-taste, dark-red coloured dried fruit, and mainly comes from north-western area of China. In the first instance, Chinese medicine believes it acts on liver and kidney channels and enriches yin. So it is a common practice in Chinese medicine to prescribe it to treat liver, kidney, or eye diseases, along with other herbs. On the other hand, Chinese people also consume goji berries in their day-to-day lives, because they believe this red coloured berry can keep them healthy, young, and energetic. This fruit has been eaten as raw, as goji juice, as herbal tea (e.g. with Chrysanthemum), with yogurt, and with cereal etc etc.Cacao nibs contains Magnesium, Sulphur, and Anti-oxidant, Monoamine Oxidase Enzyme Inhibitors, Phenylethylamine, and Anandamide. These substances can help us having healthy heart, relieving us from stressful mood, and much more. So recent years cacao nibs are becoming a popular healthy food.Maca root can be used as veget
An abscess in the tooth refers to an infection that was caused by a pocket of pus residing in the tissue around the tooth. Abscesses are very serious conditions, and can lead to serious matters if they aren't treated immediately. When the pulp of a tooth dies due to damage or decay, bacteria will begin to grow from the dead tissue that is left. This bacteria will eventually spread from the root of the dead tooth into the tissue that is below and create a pocket of pus - the abscess.Gum disease is also a cause for a tooth becoming abscessed. Gum diseases causes the gums to pull back and away from teeth, leaving pockets behind. When one of the pockets becomes blocked, the bacteria can grow and spread, or get backed up. When this happens, an abscess will start to form under the surface of the gums and become apparent will swelling as it gets bigger and spreads.Once the infection has started to spread, your jawbone may start to dissolve as it makes room for the swelling in the area that ha

Raise your hand if you're a chocolate-lover. I can't see you, but I'm guessing your hand is up like most of us out there. It's no wonder, considering chocolate is the most commonly craved food in the U.S. Since research tells us chocolate is consumed by more people in winter than during any other season, you'll probably encounter plenty of that decadent delight in candy dishes and on dessert tables. When nothing but chocolate in its purest form will do (sometimes fat-free hot cocoa just doesn't cut it), getting your fix without getting a big fat and calorie punch along with it can be next to impossible. For example, just one measly Godiva Open Oyster has 115 calories and 6 grams of fat. A regular-size Hershey's milk chocolate bar also brings a not-so-sweet 230 calories and 13 grams of fat. The damage from just 1/4 of a 6-ounce Dove dark chocolate bar? That'll be 230 calories and 14 grams of fat. Even a "fun size" bag of M&M's manages to cram in 100 calories and 4.5 grams of fat. And,
Skin care involves a lot of consciousness; there are several small things that will ensure you have a clean and clear skin that can show your good health and happiness. Radiant skin means you are healthy and doing all those things which do not just keep your body, but also your skin healthy.Exercising not just helps maintain your body in great shape; it also helps out adequately in maintaining the skin of your health. Increase in metabolism rate speeds up blood circulation rate in your body, thus making it possible for blood to hydrate skin properly. It has been found that the properly hydrated skin is least susceptible to skin infections and other skin related problems.Sweating during exercising makes allows throwing out of toxins and dead cells. This almost solves the problems like acne, black heads and pimples. You will readily get cleaner skin through exercising. Exercising also allows proper hydration of skin; this will help you avoid wrinkles, though this process needs to be supp

My doctor has a cottage near mine and we often run into each other and chat about our pets. She has a beautiful white Maltese that just had a litter. One day we were talking about food for the dogs and she told me she feeds her dog like I feed mine - they get chicken, pork, beef, liver and whatever other meat we are eating as well as some fresh vegetables. She leaves dog food out as a snack as do I. The reason? She told me she had done a lot of research into the high rate of diabetes in dogs and found that commercial dog food is high in carbohydrates and this is what causes diabetes. We all know people in the area with different types of dogs who are giving them insulin on a regular basis for their diabetes. She believes that if we fed them more meat and vegetables we can avoid this in our pets. I personally have been following this diet with my two boys and they are always full of energy, have beautiful coats, no "doggie breath" and are at a proper weight. When they go to the vet, he

I've been looking around the web looking for sites that will benefit people who are subscribed to this blog. One of the fundamental aspects of healthy living is healthy eating. I found this great site: http://www.seekwellness.com/nutrition/elderly_guide.htmI am starting to eat healthier. My new 'favorite' food is roasted garlic. I just pop a clove in the oven, skin and all, and let it roast. When soft I eat it with my meat. It does have a strong odor, but a nuty flavor. I don't notice any lingering odor. If garlic does help prevent illness, then I should be safe for this winter.Life Just Keep Getting Better And Better
Do you ever wonder what fit people do differently from those with excess fat? If you think they were born with special genes to release fat, and you were born with unfavorable ones which promote the storage of fat, think again. While genetics does play some role in where you store fat, recent studies show you have the ability to overcome genes and express the positive side of a gene. At any given time, a fat cell can swell or shrink, depending more on your lifestyle (eating and physical activity) than your genes. If you had the chance to spend 24 hours with a fit person, you would observe several key things that they do differently than the average sedentary one. Here are 5 of those things that they do differently:1. Sleep well and wake up naturally. Many fit people arise without an alarm clock feeling energized, rested and hungry. They have set fitness goals and a plan to achieve them. People who are fit fall asleep easier, have more quality sleep and require less sleep than someone who
How to have a happy, healthy 2008:
By Kermit B. Fernander, Guardian Religion Reporter -
Nassau, Bahamas:
The following tips for a happy, healthy 2008 are offered as reminders only. While we are familiar with all of them, we sometimes fail to put them into practice. So, instead of stressing about the things that did not go well in 2007, let's try and learn from our mistakes so as not to repeat them in 2008!
1. Be generous. The more you give, the more blessings you will receive.
2. Be obedient, even when God's plan doesn't make sense to you.
3. Love your neighbor as yourself by practicing that rarest of virtues: hospitality.
4. Give to those who have less than you. Don't give just to receive something in return.
5. Don't be afraid. God said He would never leave us nor forsake us - and He meant what He said.
6. Take time to rest and enjoy the company of friends.
7. Value, honor and enjoy your family. They are all you have, no matter how strange they may seem to you
As we all know, toothaches and any type of oral injury can be extremely painful and should be seen by a dentist immediately. Dental emergencies should be seen immediately by a dentist, day or night. These emergencies include broken teeth, teeth that have been knocked out, or teeth that have been forced out of the socket. With some emergencies, the cheeks, lips, or gums will have cuts or abrasions on them from where the teeth come out of the socket. If you've had a tooth recently knocked out, the first thing you should do is look for that tooth. When you've found the tooth, gently scrub it to get rid of any dirt or debris. Once you have cleaned it, you should place it back in your mouth between the cheek and gums. Whatever you do, you should never try to put it back in the socket. If you can make it to the dentist in time, he may be able to put the tooth back in place. If you've had a tooth come out of place, you can normally reposition it with your fingers. You shouldn't use a lot of for
