  • The British security services by outing their informers in Ireland are attempting to re-write history.
In an article published on the Guardians Comment is Free web site, Mick Fealty of Slugger O’Toole wrote that whilst the exposure of yet another informer within the SF hierarchy “will not upset any constitutional apple-carts [as] Paisley's Democratic Unionists are committed to working with their former enemies almost come what may.” it does once again highlight “Sinn Fein's: violent past” “That fresh start promised by the St Andrews Agreement, is no longer fresh nor the clear cut break with the past that many within Sinn Féin would have wished for. Each time another fragment of its "secret history" becomes public, its democratic credentials tarnish just a little bit more.” *Indeed, but surely due to this continuos drip, drip of allegations about informers within Sinn Fein, it is time the debate was moved on to question just why the British Security Services, with the North of Ireland peace process securely bedded down, would wish to continue to out its own informers who
  • Cheap Unsecured Loans - Try If You Have Good Credit History To Boast Of
Unsecured loans are the most sought after loan products in the UK loan market. The borrowers feel secured as their loans are unsecured. Anybody who goes for a loan has three things in mind- his financial requirements get fulfilled, he gets loan at a low APR, and the deal involves less risk for him. Risk is measured by the presence or absence of asset as collateral. Unsecured loans are popular because the borrowers need not pledge any asset in lieu of getting the loan. However, absence of security increases the risk for the lenders. He can take legal action against the borrower, should the latter default on the loan repayment. However, the case usually takes a long time to be settled. So, the lender covers the risk by charging high APR on unsecured loans. The amount that can be availed as unsecured loans is less as well. So, if you need finances for a major project like buying a house, secured loans will serve you better.People generally look for cheap unsecured loans in the market. But
  • The History of FOREX Trading
The origin of Forex trading traces its history to centuries ago. Different currencies and the need to exchange them had existed since the Babylonians. They are credited with the first use of paper notes and receipts. Speculation hardly ever happened, and certainly the enormous speculative activity in the market today would have been frowned upon.In those days, the value of goods were expressed in terms of other goods(also called as the Barter System). The obvious limitations of such a system encouraged establishing more generally accepted mediums of exchange. It was important that a common base of value could be established. In some economies, items such as teeth, feathers even stones served this purpose, but soon various metals, in particular gold and silver, established themselves as an accepted means of payment as well as a reliable storage of value. Trade was carried among people of Africa, Asia etc through this system.Coins were initially minted from the preferred metal and in sta

  • Paleontologists say two explosive evolutionary events shaped early history of multicellular life
Scientists have known for some time that most major groups of complex animals appeared in the fossils record during the Cambrian Explosion, a seemingly rapid evolutionary event that occurred 542 million years ago. Now Virginia Tech paleontologists, using rigorous analytical methods, have identified another explosive evolutionary event that occurred about 33 million years earlier among macroscopic life forms unrelated to the Cambrian animals. They dubbed this earlier event the "Avalon Explosion." The discovery, reported in the Jan. 4 issue of Science, suggests that more than one explosive evolutionary event may have taken place during the early evolution of animals. The Cambrian explosion event refers to the sudden appearance of most animal groups in a geologically short time period between 542 and 520 million years ago, in the early Cambrian Period. Although there were not as many animal species as in modern oceans, most (if not all) living animal groups were represented in the Cambrian

  • Advanced SLIT Case History 102: The Strange Case of the Pentagon Worker's Malady
I've just finished reading "The Hound of the Baskervilles" for the umpteenth time...I love detective stories, and I especially love the archetypical detective, Sherlock Holmes.  And in the following case history, one of Holme's axioms is employed--here it is, repeated multiple times in various settings: "Eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth" (from The Sign of Four)"How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improb able, must be he truth" (again, from The Sign of Four) "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" (from The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier)"We must fall back upon the old axiom that when all other contingencies fail, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" (from The Adventure of Bruce-Partington Plans) .  Keep this Sher

WordPress is actually a folk of another blogging software called b2/cafelog which started back in 2001The first release of WordPress was version 0.7. It was released on May 27, 2003. It was the upgrade from b2 version 0.62 that a lot of people had waited for. It was XHTML 1.1 complaint, had new default templates and a new admin interface. On June 9, 2003 WordPress 0.71 was released. This was a pretty major update to the software with loads of bug and security fixes, as well as a 300% speed-up in performance! Also in this release there was the introduction of the post status (Publish, Draft and Private), as well as a much cleaner admin panel. Soon after version, 0.7.1.1 was released to fix a small bug.It wasn’t until the October 11, 2003 that version 0.72 was released which had a large list of upgrades. These updates included Blogger import, security and bug fixes and lots of improvements on original functions. On December 19, 2003 the WordPress Wiki was launched which held all the docu
  • History of Zencart - Open Source Shop Script
Even before the release of osCommerce MS2.2.2, in June 2003 the new domain name Zen-Cart.com had been registered. A team was put together comprised of Ian C Wilson, Kim Elliott, Steve Strassburg and Linda McGrath, and the first Zen-Cart.com Web site was posted in November 2003. Besides streamlining the programming and utilizing CSS (cascading stylesheets) rather than the evil and outdated font tags, the Zen Cart team's philosophy was to make it easy to upgrade the store, and to offer frequent, small updates. The Zen Cart team released its version 1.3.8 on November 30 of 2007. The group has announced that by February 5, 2008, the minimum supported PHP version will be the current version, PHP 5.2. Wilson says the group created an umbrella company in March, 2007 which is exploring the possibility of financing the Zen-Cart open source e-commerce system, called Zen Ventures LLC. • A Brief History of Kings, Dynasties and the Name of Vietnam
A Brief History of Kings, Dynasties and the Name of Vietnam At the beginning of the Bronze Age, the Viet tribe groups had settled in the North and North-Centre Vietnam. There were about 15 groups of Lac Viet tribesmen living mainly in the northern highlands and delta, and a dozen Au Viet groups living in Viet Bac, the northern region of old Vietnam. At that time, the two ethnic tribes of the Lac Viet and Au Viet lived together in many areas with other inhabitants. Due to the increasing needs to control floods, fight against invaders, and exchange culture and economy, these tribes living near each other tended to gather and integrate into a larger mixed groups. Among these Lac Viet tribes was the Van Lang, also the most powerful tribe. The leader of this tribe joined all the Lac Viet tribes together to found Van Lang Nation, addressing himself as Hung King. The next generations followed in their father’s footsteps and kept this appellation. Based on historical documents, research
  • Chargers have history on their side
If history has anything to do with it, the Chargers will beat the New England Patriots on Sunday to advance to the Super Bowl. The only other time the teams met for a championship, the Chargers wiped out the Boston Patriots, 51-10, for the 1963 American Football League championship.Of course, back then the game was played in San Diego, people waited in line for three hours at the Lafayette Hotel to buy tickets and it wasn’t supposed to be the coldest day of the year … as it may be Sunday in Foxboro, Mass. with the wind chill factor near zero degrees.Looking back, the Chargers jumped out to a 31-10 lead they never relinquished in that 1963 championship game … the only time the Chargers have ever won a league title.Keith Lincoln was the star for San Diego, rushing for 206 yards and 1 touchdown in 13 attempts, catching 7 passes for 123 yards and 1 TD … and even completing a 20-yard pass on his only attempt. Then there was Paul Lowe, who rushed for 94 yards and 1 TD; Tobin Rote (173
  • Nate Robertson is the highest paid 5th starter in history
OK, I'll admit that the headline is a bit hyperbolic. Sure, Robertson is the 5th starter for the Tigers, but he's a middle of the rotation guy on many lesser teams.Actually, I'm quite happy with the Tigers locking up Mr. Gum Time at $21 million total for 3 years. Considering the high price and scarcity of major league quality starting pitching, the contract is a relative steal.Ricky Vaughn glasses and Goose Gossage facial hair? That's worth a few million in itself...A pitcher with Robertson's bulldog tendencies is a plus in any rotation. I know, I know, that sort of thing is wholly subjective, and it makes sabers cringe. But you can't deny that Robertson has made the most of his limited talent to become a very respectable starting pitcher on a pennant contending team.Even though it's mid January, you can pencil Robertson in for 12-14 wins, 125 K's, 200 innings, and an ERA in the mid 4's. Will Robertson win 20 games? No, but 15 wins is not out of line. what I've described is not lights o
  • A look back in Lions history with the Little Fella
For some odd reason, the Freep is running old columns by the Little Fella of their website. I saw the following in my RSS reader...EDITOR'S NOTE: On Aug. 4, 1985, Mitch Albom made his debut in the pages of the Detroit Free Press. Since then, of course, he has gone onto nationwide fame as a sports columnist and worldwide fame as an author. This is an Albom column that was originally published on Nov. 15, 1988. This is the first in a series of columns written by Albom that we will run on freep.com.Uh...OK. But why? Am I missing something here? Is there an anniversary of some sort? Is the Freep trying to embarrass the Little Fella, by reminding everyone what a marvelous sports writer he was, once upon a time, long, long ago, in a Detroit that's far, far away?I became even more conflicted when I read the column. It was actually good! The Freep saw fit to reprint Albom's take on Wayne Fontes being named interim head coach of the Lions after Darryl "What does a guy have to do to get fired aro
  • An oral history of LinuxCabal
In today's world of corporatized GNU/Linux and FOSS, it's easy to forget that Linux was originally "marketed" by decidedly non-mainstream people, many of whom are now ignored or forgotten. Richard Couture (check this old bio page for him) is one of the more colorful members of that elite group. He co-founded LinuxCabal in San Francisco in 1996 and moved it -- and himself -- to Guadalajara (Mexico) in 2005, where LinuxCabal is once again a notable force in grassroots Linux evangelism. But that's enough talk from us. Richard tells the story better than we do, which is why we were pleased to get him to talk into the Linux.com video camera between sessions at the 6ş. • History of jewelry
Jewelry – How It StartedJewelry is a personal ornament used to adorn different parts of the body, such as necklace adorns the neck, bracelet adorns the wrist and so on. These ornaments can be crafted using different materials like wood, shells, iron, copper, rubber, precious metals, gemstones etc. and the designs and styles can vary from nation to nation, culture to culture. The word jewelry is derived from the English word “jewel” which is further derived from the French word "jouel" meaning “gemstone”. Jewelry is one of the oldest forms of body adornment. During earlier times, most of the jewelry was created for practical or religious purposes. For instance, in ancient Rome men wore a signet ring which was used to store official documentation, in many different cultures children were made to wear pendants or bracelets as amulets to ward off evil etc. During these times jewelry was made of natural materials like wood, shell, teeth, bones, stone etc.As times changed, the use o
  • Can Chargers repeat road playoff history?
Precedence says the Chargers have a good chance of beating the Indianapolis Colts on the road Sunday in the AFC Divisional playoffs.Thirteen seasons ago, the top-seeded Pittsburgh Steelers rested many of their regular players in the season finale but still barely lost to the Chargers, 37-34.Based on that game, the “experts” knew that the Steelers (with all hands on board) would crush the Chargers in Pittsburgh for the AFC Championship.Guess what? The Chargers won, 17-13, to advance to their only Super Bowl appearance.Fast forward to this season …The Colts were missing six regulars with injuries (and two more left the game hurt) when they barely lost to the Chargers in San Diego, 23-21, on Nov. 11.Now, Indianapolis is the same 8 1/2-point favorite that Pittsburgh was when it lost to the Chargers in January 1995.The Colts are expected to have starters Marvin Harrison and Anthony Gonzalez at wide receiver, tight end Dallas Clark, tackles Tony Ugoh and Ryan Diem and linebackers Tyjua
