  • Hong Kong ready for Chinese New Year travel peak
With the Chinese New Year Golden Week just around the corner, the Tourism Commission has coordinated with government departments and the tourism industry, and liaised with Mainland tourism authorities, to draw up measures to prepare for the arrival of Mainland visitors during the travel peak period. These measures include enhancing the flow of visitors at boundary control points, stepping up promotion of "honest and quality tourism" and shop inspections to protect tourists' interests, and advising visitors to cross the boundary at Lo Wu, or Shenzhen Bay Port and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line check point.Commissioner for Tourism Au King-chi said they would monitor the recent Mainland snowstorms' impact on inbound and outbound travelers, and offer assistance when necessary. To ensure tourists' safety, the Travel Industry Council has issued notices relating to several outbound group tours destined for affected provinces. • School's out: Hong Kong kids major in stock trading
By James Pomfret HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong students are piling loans and family savings into a volatile stock market, a growing trend that worries social workers in a city known for its derivatives-savvy grandmothers and stock-tipping taxi drivers. Third-year Hong Kong University law student Ivan Lee made US$38,000 on stocks and warrants when the Hang Seng Index climbed 39 percent in 2007, but half of his gains were wiped out by a 14 percent market slide this week. "It's a good lesson to us," Lee said, grimacing at how panicked selling gripped global markets. "I'd say around four or five out of every 10 male students now bet on the stock market." Long regarded by many as a harmless pastime for finance students, stock trading is becoming more widespread, according to a poll by Chinese University, which found around 10 percent of students had pumped over half their savings into the markets. • China Refuses To Allow Hong Kong Port Entry By USS Kittyhawk
Our "friends" the Chinese are once again flexing their gimpy little arms. I think retaliation should involve sending lead based toys to China, of course, Chinese kids have no time to play while working in sweat-shops. China has refused permission for a U.S. aircraft carrier and accompanying vessels to visit Hong Kong for a long-planned Thanksgiving holiday visit, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday. The Kitty Hawk group and its crew of 8,000 U.S. airmen and sailors had been expected in Hong Kong on Wednesday, but will now spend the holiday on the South China Sea. Hundred of relatives of crew members of the USS Kitty Hawk had flown to Hong Kong to celebrate Thanksgiving with their loved ones. Hong Kong has been a regular port of call for U.S. sailors on "R & R" (rest and recuperation) since the Vietnam War. The Chinese move comes as a surprise just weeks after a visit to China by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, which he said he hoped would lead to a long-term dialogu

Etty and I are back in Hong Kong with the family; finally. Last night I gave the boys haircuts (They've requested them from me their whole life. I give my little men thousand dollar haircuts. Of course it's on the house. I have distinct reasoning for cutting it myself. I give them the cut that I have. I give them the Beverly Hills treatment while they sit for me.. I learned from the best in Hollywood. When I get my hair done- it comes with drinks and gossip magazines. My salon has apple juice and a book about a family of penguins. This latest book we got is about two male penguins who fall in love at the Central Park Zoo and raise a baby penguin together. Racy little tale for kids I'd say!? It was a gift. Anyway for as long as they would sit for me; their dews came out great. I try and cut their hair like mine so people at least perceive that they are my children. • Take the Hong Kong Star Ferry
Before I write about the Hong Kong Star Ferry … you should read "The World of Suzie Wong" before you travel to Hong Kong: Robert Lomax tired of working in an office, wants to be an artist. So he moves to Hong Kong to try his hand at painting. Finding a cheap hotel he checks in, only to find it’s used by prostitutes and their ’dates’ who meet in the bar downstairs. Since he never picks up any of ladies, they all want to know more about him. Eventually he does hire one to model for him, but soon falls in love. But, since he’s on a limited budget, he can’t afford her exclusively, and doesn’t want to ’share’ her. to put you in the right Hong Kong mood … if you are staying in the Wan Chai area you will be recognizing tons of things form the book and the Star Ferry going from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island will appear in the book as well. From their website: Hutong with its bird’s eye location on the 28th Floor of One Peking in Tsim Sha Tsui, has the charm of old China alongside the glitz of the new….and with cuisine to match. Calvin Yeung brings you a menu based on traditional Northern Chinese food with a contemporary twist – no heavy cornflour and no MSG. Instead the subtle and spicy flavours of the cuisine shine through. Amongst the dishes to tempt are ”Braised prime beef rib with Chinese spices wrapped in lotus leaves” and “Mandarin fish fillets in a sea of crispy garlic and peanut” and the famous signature “Crispy de-boned Lamb” served on a long wooden platter. The strips of lamb are marinated and cooked till crispy on top but inside the delicate meat is soft and just melts in the

I chose the Cosmo Hotel because of it’s great location ( right next to the Happy Valley Race Track ), free Wifi in the Lobby, free shuttle bus to the Hong Kong airport express and other MTR Stations and because of it’s look . When you arrive with the Airport Express I recommend to take the the Shuttle to the hotel right from Hong Kong (Central) Station. At first we thought we should continue to Causeway Bay (which is really close to the hotel) and take the shuttle from there. But don’t do that. Because Causeway bay area is pretty confusing and it might be hard to find the shuttle bus considering carrying all your luggage. So when you arrive at Central Station look out for the Hotel Shuttle Bus signs.. follow them and the Cosmo Hotel Bus leaves there once an hour 5 minutes to the hour. If you just missed the shuttle bus and don’t feel like waiting you can take a taxi which will cost you 5 bucks or so. The Shuttle busses leave right next door at the Mother Hote

Hotels.com and Cheaptickets helped me to organise the trip. This will be my first post about tips, tricks and stories I would like to share from the trip to Hong Kong / China. What is the cheapest way to get to your vacation destination? This is the question I always ask myself when I start to plan a trip. Well, if your destination is Asia and you are living in Europe/Canada US West Coast there is only one airline to provide you the best price…. Oasis Hong Kong Airline it is: Oasis is a fairly new low budget airline which only flies to Hong Kong … right now from London - Gatwick and from Vancouver. If you book early enough you can fly from 300 bucks roundtrip. This can’t get any cheaper. You could fly even from LA to Vancouver stay a night in an airport Hotel and fly Oasis to Hong Kong the next day … that will be still cheaper then buying a RT ticket from the big airlines. And this is what we did….. We took the bus from Sligo to Dublin … staye
