The evolution of new genes is not the only way for a species to change. The loss of genes may also lead to adaptations that help species survive, but this idea has not been well studied. Now, scientists at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have carried out the first systematic computational analysis to identify long-established genes that were lost during the millions of years of evolution leading to the human species. Their findings appear in the December 14 issue of PLoS Computational Biology."This is the first study designed to search the entire genome for recent loss of genes that do not have any near-duplicate copies elsewhere in the genome. These are likely to be the more important gene losses," said David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering at UCSC. Haussler and five others in his research group--postdoctoral researcher Jingchun Zhu, graduate students Zack Sanborn and Craig Lowe, technical projects manager Mark Diekhans, and evolutionary biologist Tom Pringle

You have to do something with all the spare body parts laying around. You don't want them going to waste. A human tongue has been served up in a hospital canteen's chicken risotto — and bosses reckon it was accidentally dropped into the food by a doctor. Slovenian officials are investigating after a doctor complained about a strange piece of meat on his plate. Ananova.com revealed the doctor insisted it was not chicken and after some intense bickering it was sent away for tests — and found to be part of a human tongue. Inspectors have closed the canteen in Izola, southern Slovenia, to review hygiene standards. Bosses believe a doctor could have unwittingly dropped the tongue in the food after treating a patient.

In the heart of lean manufacturing is the human resource. It is the most important of all the resources available for any lean organization. This is the only resource which can think and feel and importantly can make decisions consciously. No matter what is the industry you are in, people and respect for them forms a one primary pillar of lean. But unfortunately this is the most commonly wasted resource as well.Wasting the human resource is most damaging for any organization. People will have more to offer your organization than what they offer now. Most of the success stories of lean are successful not because its tools or software etc. They are successful because they have found out the ways of using their human resources effectively in their operations. When guided with lean thinking and leadership motivated people can do wonders for your organization. There are plenty of theories about motivation out there. All agree in one thing in common. People can not be made productive only wit
Barbie, the pint-sized doll has been the penultimate possession for every pre-adolescent ever since her launch in 1959. With the plastic doll being marketed as a ‘teenage fashion model’, teenagers were roped in on the Barbie fad as well. The launch of a personal clothing and accessory line now completes the entire ‘Barbie experience’. Indeed, so closely is the doll associated with the western concepts of perfection that there are girls and even grown women looking to emulate the appearance of the doll, turning to plastic surgery to replicate the look. One such woman is Sarah Burge, who unabashedly admits enjoying it when people refer to her as the human Barbie. Sarah who is 48 years old is known to have had at least 26 plastic surgery treatments. There is almost no part of her body that has been left untouched by the cosmetic knife; but Sarah is completely happy with the way she looks and happily ascertains that her daughters too are proud of what she has achieved with p
The HGH found some of its first applications on children who suffered from a stunted growth with its bone and muscle boosting properties. When it was successfully isolated in 1956 it was touted as a medical marvel.Extracted from the pituitary gland in the brain, this hormone faced a lot of controversy in the days when genetic engineering had not yet taken hold of the medical research community. This is mainly because the only source of this hormone was a human corpse. But today HGH is produced synthetically in laboratories and though not yet approved by the FDA; it finds a lot of applications, the foremost of which are anti-ageing products and cosmetic surgery treatments. The human ageing hormone is supposed to decrease fat and pump up the muscles while also improving the skin texture and a person’s sexual drive. There are a lot of self-styled specialists and cosmetic surgeons who exclusively deal with anti-ageing products and administer them to the jet-set in America. The Food and Drug
A North Carolina State University scientist has developed a system called thermophilic anaerobic digestion, which converts animal waste into various useful products, including methane gas for fuel, liquid nutrients for aquaculture, and nutrient-rich feed additives for the poultry and livestock industries. The thermophilic anaerobic digestion process involves enclosing animal waste in containers with heat-loving bacteria. The waste in the digester unit is heated to more than 115 degrees F. Bacteria in the digester then convert the waste into biogas, which can be used as fuel. The bacteria also destroy pathogens in the solid residue that remains. These by-products can then be processed as sanitary, nutrient-rich feed supplements. The demonstration projects in North Carolina indicate that the thermal recyclers are very productive. This simple method for processing animal waste, may someday lead to the productive use of the 500 million tons of poultry and livestock waste produced in the Unite

Nowadays, breakthroughs in molecular biology are happening at an unprecedented rate. One of them is the ability to create transgenic animals such as cows, mice, rats, rabbits, pigs and sheep.Since the discovery of the molecular structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in 1953, molecular biological research has gained momentum. Molecular biology technology combines techniques and expertise from biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology and microbiology. The fundamental principle in the creation of transgenic animals is the introduction of a foreign gene or genes into the animal. There are three basic methods that are used in transgenic technology known as DNA microinjection, retrovirus-mediated gene transfer and embryonic stem cell-mediated gene transfer. The contribution of transgenic animals to human welfare is enormous. Transgenic cows produce more milk with lesser amount of lactose; transgenic sheep yield more quantity of wool. The National Institute of Science and Media publ

The British Labour Party, the SPD in Germany, the Communist Party of India who govern West Bengal,[M[ and the ANC in South Africa have all bought into the false neo-liberal consensus that the most important political issue of the day is how one creates a dynamic economy which produces both economic growth and wealth. By doing so, all of these once progressive political organizations, along with countless smaller ones such as SF in Ireland, have become nothing more that the purveyor’s of gross inequality. For by choosing to trust big business implicitly and act as if it is a sublime influence within society, in reality amounts to inviting the fox into the hen-coop and by so doing we have ended up with a society which is the opposite of what the majority of the memberships of these organizations originally intended. It is no accident that reformist politicians like Gordon Brown, Gerhard Schröder, Budhadeb Bhattacharya and Thabo Mbeki have been to the fore in advocating neo liberal econ

Today there are an estimated 6 billion people populating planet Earth. In spite of the many terrors that modern man has created [read nuclear weapons, advanced machinery, global warming, medicine wars, etc.] the Homo sapien race has flourished rather well.Numerous developments in medicine, machinery and agriculture have also facilitated human survival in adverse environs. The human race today can attempt to claim that it can adapt to any environment, albeit a little hesitantly. But such an advanced state of development can hardly point out with clarity that the human race has stopped evolving.A new study pointing to a contrary situation is doing the rounds in scientific circles today though. According to this study, human evolution has accelerated in the past 40,000 years and has zoomed a 100 times ahead in the past 5000 years alone. The fact that an increasing number of human beings are inter-breeding is apparently inconsequential if this analysis is anything to go by.These proceeding

Just on time for cold and flu season, a microbiologist at the University of Idaho says we're not made up of sugar, spice, snails, puppy dog tails, or even mostly human cells for that matter. According to an article in Scientific American, our body contains 10 times as many bacterial cells as human ones, enough to fill a half-gallon container. Yum! Makes you want to buy stock in Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer, doesn't it?

by Adam Abdullah26 September 2006In this era of scientific advancement in the field of medical science, Muslim physicians and Islamic scholars need to establish clearly rules and guidelines concerning medical research on human. This was stressed at the 8th conference of the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences, where they urged medical nstitutions to take ethical principles into consideration when conducting biomedical researches on human beings.“All research involving human subjects should be conducted with three basic ethical principles, namely respect for persons, beneficence, if benefits outweigh harms and justice,” said Nazih Hammad, a member of the Islamic Fiqh Academy, an affiliation of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).“The performance of research on human subjects is Islamically acceptable. However, it should be useful and responsive to the purposes of Islamic law including the safeguarding of one´s religion, life, intellect, progeny and property, an

This has absolutely nothing to do with science fiction or fantasy, but after my recent experience at the gas station I feel it necessary to rant about this particular subject. Now, I'm new to the Santa Cruz area, and I'm also new to the concept of directed traffic at gas stations. I'm used to a small town environment where lines at the pump pretty much don't exist, and when they do it's very clear where you can go to get in line and people, generally, don't care about the direction of traffic so long as they end up at the pump at some point in the day. Well, this is apparently not the case in Santa Cruz. Now, because I'm so unused to this new concept of directed traffic at the pumps, I pulled up to the Safeway pump, go behind a lady who was pulled in to a spot in the opposite direction of the cars on the other end. I assumed that "hey, I can pull in behind her and be set to go", thinking there weren't really that many cars on the other s

Narrated Sayyidatna ‘Aisha (Rady Allahu Anha): Hind bin Utba bin Rabi’a came and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! By Allah, there was no family on the surface of the earth I liked to see in degradation more than I did your family, but today there is no family on the face of the earth whom I like to see honored more than yours.” Hind added, “Abu Sufyan is a miser.
