  • Little Ice Age Part 2?
Solar Activity Diminishes; Researchers Predict Another Ice Age A typical sunspot compared to the size of the earth. Sunspots have all but vanished in recent years.Henrik Svensmark explains the SKY experimen Global Cooling comes back in a big way Dr. Kenneth Tapping is worried about the sun. Solar activity comes in regular cycles, but the latest one is refusing to start. Sunspots have all but vanished, and activity is suspiciously quiet. The last time this happened was 400 years ago -- and it signaled a solar event known as a "Maunder Minimum," along with the start of what we now call the "Little Ice Age." Tapping, a solar researcher and project director for Canada's National Research Council, says it may be happening again. Overseeing a giant radio telescope he calls a "stethoscope for the sun," Tapping says, if the pattern doesn't change quickly, the earth is in for some very chilly weather. During the Little Ice Age, global temperatures dro

  • Preventing Ice On The Windshield
Scraping off your windshield in the winter can be a royal pain in the butt. If you don't have a garage, you probably dread getting out in the morning and scraping off the ice until you can see through the windshield properly. If you have a garage, well then this article isn't meant for you! Below are some techniques you should consider when you want to prevent ice from getting on your windshield. Use a special mixture I did some research online and found that there are some great techniques you can use with common household items. One of the common recipes I've come across was using 3 parts of vinegar to 1 part of water and simply place it in a spray bottle. Every night before you go in for the night, make sure that you spray all of the windshields with this mixture. Vinegar will prevent the ice from forming on your windshield. Also remember that you should spray your side passenger windows as well. If you don't have access to vinegar, you can also use rubbing alcohol as well. All of t

  • Breyers Lactose-Free Vanilla Ice Cream
When I was young I consumed massive quantities of dairy. The shape or form didn't seem to matter. Downing bowls of ice creams, quarts of cottage cheese, pints of yogurt, or chocolate milk mixed with heavy cream were daily experiences. My mom used to buy a product called "big moo" -- it was five gallons of milk in a huge container with a spigot. I could easily get through that within the week. Heck, a friend once paid me to eat a stick of butter, and I enjoyed it (mostly). This infatuation with dairy got more refined as I aged, but not any less intense. Instead of gallons of ice cream, it was piles of cheeses. Living above a gourmet shop, the manager provided me with the pick of the cheeses as they arrived, the bluer the better. But some time in my early 20s stomach issues started developing, and eventually it became clear that I was... lactose intolerant. About this there is only one thing I can say: it sucks! For a while lactaid pills helped. But as my tolerance decreased, so di

  • Global warming causes older Arctic sea ice to almost disappear
A new study using satellite measurements has revealed that thick Arctic sea ice older than nine years, had all but disappeared by 2007, because of global warming.   According to a report in Discovery News, this older ice is giving way to thinner ice which is only two or three years old. In fact, the new ice now accounts for 58 percent of the ice cover -- up from 35 percent in the mid-1980s.   "The thinning is consistent with long-term warming," said ice researcher James Maslanik of the University of Colorado in Boulder.   The thinner ice that's now dominating the Arctic is more vulnerable to ridging - the crumpling into ridged rafts of ice - or melting, said the report.   Either way, there will be more open water, which can absorb summer sunlight and warm up the Arctic even further, the report added.   The key to the new sea ice measurements is data from the laser altimeter onboard NASA's Ice, Cloud and Elevation Satellite (ICE-Sat).   Using the

  • Madras, Mysore University alumnus’ edible antifreeze keeps ice cream’s taste perfect
An alumnus of Madras University and Mysore University edible antifreeze that can keep ice cream tasty and smooth, besides preventing other frozen foods from being ruined.   Food chemist Srinivasan Damodaran, who is currently associated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has revealed that he made his antifreeze by partly digesting gelatin using an enzyme called papin, which is found in papaya.   He says that gelatin is much more effective at preventing ice crystals from growing to 40 microns or larger from around 15 to 20 microns in width, as water melts and refreezes, while ice cream is transported home from the store.   Using a process called gel chromatography, Damodaran separated the partly digested gelatine into proteins in different weight ranges. He later added the gelatine samples to different batches of identical ice cream frozen to -40 degree Celsius.   The researcher examined each batch alongside a control sample on a microscopic slide. The temper
  • Older sea ice in the Arctic giving way to younger, thinner ice
A new study by University of Colorado at Boulder researchers has indicated that sea ice in the Arctic is giving way to younger, thinner ice, making it more susceptible to record summer sea-ice lows.   For the research, the team used satellite data going back to 1982 to reconstruct past Arctic sea ice conditions. They also used passive microwave, visible infrared radar and laser altimeter satellite data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as ocean buoys to measure and track sections of sea ice.   According to Research Professor James Maslanik of CU-Boulder's Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research, there has been a nearly complete loss of the oldest, thickest ice and that 58 percent of the remaining perennial ice is thin and only 2-to-3 years old.   "We followed the ice in sequential images and track it back to where it had been previously, which allowed us to infer the relative ages of the ice
