This is something that I've been meaning to post about but just never got around to it. I figured that I better get around to it since both outdoor rinks are on a limited run. There are two outdoor ice skating rinks in the Southland. One is located in Pershing Square in Downtown LA. The other at the Irvine Spectrum. A new study using satellite measurements has revealed that thick Arctic sea ice older than nine years, had all but disappeared by 2007, because of global warming. According to a report in Discovery News, this older ice is giving way to thinner ice which is only two or three years old. In fact, the new ice now accounts for 58 percent of the ice cover -- up from 35 percent in the mid-1980s. "The thinning is consistent with long-term warming," said ice researcher James Maslanik of the University of Colorado in Boulder. The thinner ice that's now dominating the Arctic is more vulnerable to ridging - the crumpling into ridged rafts of ice - or melting, said the report. Either way, there will be more open water, which can absorb summer sunlight and warm up the Arctic even further, the report added. An alumnus of Madras University and Mysore University edible antifreeze that can keep ice cream tasty and smooth, besides preventing other frozen foods from being ruined. Food chemist Srinivasan Damodaran, who is currently associated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has revealed that he made his antifreeze by partly digesting gelatin using an enzyme called papin, which is found in papaya. He says that gelatin is much more effective at preventing ice crystals from growing to 40 microns or larger from around 15 to 20 microns in width, as water melts and refreezes, while ice cream is transported home from the store. Using a process called gel chromatography, Damodaran separated the partly digested gelatine into proteins in different weight ranges. I know bill Clinton always said "I feel your pain", which is ridiculous because I have never listened to a bigger narcissist, but this massive low pressure system causing these ice storms almost killed me.
