NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's domestic car sales growth slowed sharply in January from a year ago, clocking up annual expansion of 9 percent, and analysts said only new models and cheaper loans were likely to fuel a pick up in demand. India sold 113,899 cars in January, up from 104,501 in the same month a year ago, when sales had jumped 24 percent, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed on Friday. • India gold demand slack, buyers eye dips
MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's gold demand was low on Friday as prices remained firm on news of supply problems in a big mining company and firmer crude oil, but traders waited to buy on dips in the local market, dealers said. "Its very, very dull," said Ganesh Agarwal of Shiv Sahai & Sons in Chennai. "There will be sales only if prices come down around $850 an ounce." Traders said their clients were buying in bits usually at dips as the wedding season had cranked up retail sales, though imported gold competed with the cheaper local stocks built up due to sale of scrap jewellery. "People are not comfortable at current levels, but there is buying at dips," said S.K. Jindal, director of Jindal Dychem, a large trading house based in New Delhi. Jindal and Agarwal said the dip earlier this week to around $885 level had pushed sales. Overseas gold was nearly flat from the previous day, but yet had the steam to push higher as platinum was near a record

  • India forecasts lower wheat output in 2008
By Mayank Bhardwaj NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India on Thursday forecast its 2008 wheat output at 74.81 million tonnes from 75.81 million a year earlier, stoking concerns that the country may have to scout global markets to build strategic reserves. India, the world's second-biggest wheat producer, needs around 73 million tonnes of the grain annually to feed its population of more than 1 billion. It also keeps reserves for emergency and distributes the grain to the poor at lower rates. "It is a conservative estimate," Farm Secretary P.K. Mishra told a news conference. "Temperatures have been favourable so far and if it is good in February, production will be much more." Higher temperatures in February 2006 reduced India's wheat crop to 69.4 million tonnes, forcing the country to import the grain for the first time in six years. In 2007, the government tied up contracts to buy 1.8 million tonnes. "The forecast may be revised downward as we have seen in the p

By Biman Mukherji BANGALORE (Reuters) - France, which sold wheat to India for the first time last year, is hoping to become a long-term supplier to the South Asian nation, a senior industry official said on Friday. "It will all depend on the Indian crop," Francois Gatel, director of the Association for the International Promotion of French Grain, told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of an international wheat conferene. Last year, India bought an estimated 200,000 tonnes to 300,000 tonnes of French-origin wheat, out of total contracted imports of about 1.8 million tonnes, although a large crop this year makes Indian imports unlikely. Gatel said France, which accounts for about 60 percent of European Union wheat exports, was likely to produce a larger crop this year than last, putting it in a stronger position to export. "Last year, we had a bad year. On an average we have 7 tonnes yield per hectare, but last year was about 6.5," Gatel said. &quo

  • India expects growth to slow to 8.7 pct in 2007/08
By Surojit Gupta NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India expects its economy to expand 8.7 percent in fiscal 2007/08, slower than the previous year as higher interest rates dent consumer demand, and analysts expect growth to cruise at a similar speed next year. While still strong, Asia's third-largest economy has lost altitude from the heady 9.6 percent expansion seen in 2006/07 and 8.7 percent would be the slowest growth in three years. But Reserve Bank of India (RBI) chief said Thursday's official estimate would not alter the RBI's wait-and-see approach as the figure was broadly in line with its forecast of 8.5 percent for the fiscal year that ends on March 31. Analysts had been looking for gross domestic product to moderate this year from its fastest pace in 18 years in 2006/07, with a Reuters poll forecasting expansion of 8.7 percent. "Clearly moderation has set in, essentially driven by industrial moderation," said Shubhada Rao, chief economist with Yes Bank. "Goin
  • ArcelorMittal to invest $20 bln in India over 10yrs
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - ArcelorMittal, the world's top steelmaker, will invest $20 billion over the next 10 years to build two steel plants in India and is in talks for iron ore mines, a senior official said on Thursday. The plants will each have a capacity to produce 12 million tonnes of steel, and will be located in Jharkhand and Orissa. "We have identified the sites and are in the process of acquiring the land," Sudhir Maheshwari, executive director for finance, told reporters on the sidelines of a conference. He said the company was negotiating with local governments for mining rights as each of the plants, work on which would start by end-2008, would require 600 million tonnes of iron ore annually. "The biggest problem is iron ore sourcing for these projects... I can't say (the talks) are fairly advanced," he said. India has iron ore reserves of 25 billion tonnes, and has a target to produce 200 million tonnes of steel by 2020. Maheshwari said Ind

  • India gold demand low-key, scrap sales continue
MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian gold markets continued to see low-key buying on Thursday with weddings necessitating purchases even as gold hovered near its all-time high, dealers and traders said. "Every time gold falls under $900 an ounce, there is some demand," said Harshad Ajmera, proprietor of JJ Gold House in Kolkata. Retailers in his region were seeing good sales mostly of jewellery made out of recycled gold, while imported gold sold by traders moved sluggishly, Ajmera said. "Demand for imported gold is emerging slowly," said Satish Bansal of M.D. Overseas Ltd, a large New-Delhi based importer. Bansal said gold sales could strengthen if prices fell around $850. Overseas gold strengthened its recovery from the previous day's dips ahead of interest rate decisions by the Bank of England and European Central Bank but was over 3 percent down from its record $936.50 reached on Feb.1. Concerns over economic growth in the U.S. and credit market fears contin
  • India adopting delaying tactics on IPI project: Pak
Sources in Pakistan's Ministry of Law have accused India of adopting delaying tactics in signing the landmark tripartite Gas Sales Purchase Agreement (GSPA), involving Iran, Pakistan and India. Pakistan claims that it has been inviting India to hold the talks for settling the issues of the transit fee for gas transportation, but says the latter has never responded. Sources further said Pakistan had offered to talk about the transit fee on February 7 in Islamabad, but India neither declined nor accepted the offer. Pakistan and Iran may sign the Gas Sales Purchase Agreement (GSPA) in Tehran at the end of February on the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline project. The Daily Times quoted sources as saying that Iran has proposed February 24 as the date for the signing of the pact. Pakistan had earlier proposed January 25 as the date for signing of the GSPA on the IPI in Abu Dhabi. Tehran told Pakistan that it wanted to sign the agreement in Tehran with the new Pakistan Government. The
