All the Indian players are annoyed about the cap that the team can spend on buying players in the IPL.The BCCI has fixed an amount or a cap that each franchisee can spend only upto 5 million dollars on buying players.Icon players like Dravid,Ganguly,Yuvraj,Dhoni and also Sachin can earn the maximum in IPL where there bids have been put up at 400,000 dollars. The players want the cap to be removed so that the bids can go high. This major tension is palpable on the players faces and this can hamper their preparation against the Srilanka. Also many Indian players feel that they should earn more money than Australian counterparts and the IPL seems to be embroiled in tension before it has even started.
Pakistani legend and former fast bowler Wasim Akram opinioned that the negative approach of the Indian team cost them dear in the match against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday. He criticised the team management decision of sending Irfan Pathan in the number three slot while chasing only a small total. He also said that the main reason why India lost was that they sent a pinch hitter while they should have sent a proper batsman in Pathan's place. He criticised the umpires for sending Sachin Tendulkar to the pavilion when the ball would have clearly missed the stumps. The sultan of swing said India now had an uphill task against Sri Lanka who will certainly feel more confident of advancing to the finals.
India had a reasonably tough workout against Papua New Guinea at Kinrara Oval in the first round of matches of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2008 in Malaysia. History will indicate that Virat Kohli’s side won by 195 runs but the truth is that PNG put in a disciplined display full of passion, commitment and no little skill. India had to play well to make sure it looked easy against the East Asia-Pacific qualifier. Tanmay Srivastava was the backbone of the India batting and the number three ended up unbeaten on 83 as India managed 280-5 off 50 overs. Apart from a flurry of extras early in the innings, perhaps attributable to big-match nerves with the game being televised live by ICC’s host broadcaster ESPN STAR Sports, PNG bowled and fielded well and is clearly a well-drilled side. But India showed it will not be an easy side to beat in this competition. After a spirited beginning to PNG’s innings, Pradeep Sangwan, Siddharth Kaul and, later, Ajitesh Argal and Iqbal Abdullah got

LONDON: The chicken tikka masala, adjudged Britain's national dish, may soon be out of reach to many Britons as acute staff shortage has forced many Indian restaurants to shut down across the country. The one billion pound Indian food industry is facing an acute shortage of chefs due to restrictions on employing cooks from the Indian subcontinent. Concerned over the situation, the Immigration Advisory Service (IAS), UK's largest charity providing representation and advice in immigration and asylum law, has asked the Home Office to ease restrictions on migrant workers entering Britain. In a letter to the Immigration minister Liam Byrne, the IAS said the restrictions on lower-skilled workers from outside the EU were causing a severe labour shortage that it could cause "irreparable damage" to the Indian food industry. The industry employs over 50,000 people in nearly 10,000, restaurants and are largely owned by people of Bangladesh origin. Earlier requests by the industry to ease restrict
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's leading GSM-based mobile operators added 6.2 million new subscribers in January, an industry body said on Monday, maintaining rapid expansion in the world's fastest-growing wireless market. Growth outpaced December, when 5.7 million customers were added, data from the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) showed. Both figures exclude Reliance Communications Ltd, India's No. 2 mobile firm, which operates mainly on the CDMA platform but has a limited and growing GSM presence. It is yet to release its additions for January but in December signed up a total of 1.6 million new users across both technologies to take its base to nearly 41 million. Total GSM users, excluding Reliance, rose to 178.4 million in January, COAI said. India's mobile market is booming thanks to call rates as low as one U.S. cent a minute, the availability of cheap handsets and the expansion of networks to smaller towns and rural areas. Still, only about a quarter o
MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's gold demand was low on Monday with prices holding near record and most jewellers selling items made from cheaper recycled gold that continues to fill markets, dealers said. "There is no demand al all. The jewellery trade is running on undercut gold," said Ganesh Agarwal of Shiv Sahai & Sons, a large wholesaler in Chennai. Banks and large trading houses, who sell imported gold, are seeing their prices undercut by local traders as a lot of old jewellery and bars are being sold for profit taking. The old gold is melted, refined and sold as bars or bullion to jewellers who are stocking their shelves with jewellery made from the recycled metal. Local prices were cheaper by 150 rupees per 10 grams over what the banks quoted, Agarwal said. Dealers in Mumbai banks said prices closer to $900 an ounce may encourage some demand. "People believe a correction is likely," said one dealer in a large private bank. Overseas gold firmed
DHAKA (Reuters) - A recent ban on rice exports from India does not include 500,000 tonnes bought by Bangladesh under a state-to-state deal, Indian and Bangladeshi officials said on Monday. India last week banned exports of non-basmati parboiled rice to keep prices stable in India's domestic market. "The ban will not affect the export of the quantity of rice pledged for Bangladesh after Cyclone Sidr had hit Bangladesh late last year," Mohammad Ayub Miah, Secretary, Food and Disaster Management Ministry, told Reuters. India's West Bengal Essential Commodities Supply Corporation Limited will supply a total 500,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice with an average price at $399 per tonne, cost insurance and freight, officials said. Bangladeshi private sector traders though were unsure about the fate of the orders they had placed to import rice from India before imposition of the ban, and urged Indian authorities to clarify the status of these imports. "We hope th
SSP Chowrasia finally banished the gremlins and stunned a star-studded field to walk away with the Indian Masters title as the Delhi Golf Club witnessed a new star on Sunday.Son of a greenkeeper at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, SSP -- monikered 'Chipputtsia' for his magical short game -- signed off with a blemish-free final round of 67 and his aggregate of 279 was enough to make him only the third Indian -- after Arjun Atwal and Jeev Milkha Singh -- with an European Tour title against his name. Thus, an Indian went on to win what was the first European tour event in the country."This is definitely the biggest title of my career. I did not have any inkling before the tournament that the title would be mine," said the beaming golfer."As I played the last three-four holes, I knew I had the title in my grasp and all I needed was to stay calm, which I did."Now that I have won it, I would play both in Asia and Europe before attaining my ultimate goal to play in the USPGA Tour," he said.Chowra
Frenchman Rafael Jacquelin held a one-stroke lead over Ireland's Damien McGrane, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Spain's Jose Manuel Lara heading into the final round of the Indian Masters.BMW Asian Open champion Jacquelin, who missed the cut in Dubai last week, scored a level-par, third-round 72 on a blustery day to remain at six under par at the Delhi Golf Club. He got lucky over the closing holes, once rebounding out of the trees into the middle of the fairway - how nice it is to see an old-fashioned tree-lined course for a change; Tiger Woods's two-iron would certainly have been in the bag - and once stopping just short of out of bounds. The top four are not exactly career winners. Jacquelin won for only the second time last year, McGrane has never won, Lara captured his first title last year and McDowell has not triumphed since 2004.Overnight leader McGrane (75) slipped back into a tie for second after windy conditions disrupted the game plan which had helped him to a two-st
Northern Ireland's Damien McGrane stroked a majestic 69 to take a two shot lead at the Indian Masters on Friday, as Ernie Els made amends for his disastrous opening round to scrape through the cut. Another Irishman Graeme McDowell, who finished fifth behind Tiger Woods in Dubai on Sunday, shares second place with South Africa's Hendrik Buhrmann and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin at six under for the tournament on 138. But on a cold and grey Delhi day first round leader Jyoti Randhawa lost the plot, firing a five-over-par 77 to be six behind McGrane. Former Ryder Cup star Thomas Bjorn remains in the hunt at four under while US veteran Mark O'Meara is on the fringes of the leaderboard after a 73 left him six strokes adrift. World number four Els, who was rattled by a nine on Thursday, looked to be heading for an early plane home after bogeying the first but he rallied with an eagle at the eighth and a birdie on the 14th. And he fared much better on the par-5 18th that undid him in roun
Its news that IBM is to launch a software outsourcing development in Noida. One of the top 5 upcoming and favorite destinations for IT outsourcing and business process outsourcing? BANGALORE (Reuters) - Beaten down Indian software services shares climbed on Friday after a rebound on Wall Street, but other stocks fell in choppy trade with many Asian markets closed for the Lunar New Year holiday keeping investors away. Shares in Infosys Technologies and Satyam Computer rose after Cognizant Technology posted a higher quarterly profit and forecast better-than-expected first quarter and fiscal 2008 revenue. By 10:58 a.m., the benchmark BSE 30-share index was down 0.49 percent, or 85.30 points, at 17,441.62, after having risen nearly one percent in early trade. Twenty-two of its components were in the negative. "We are in a wait-and-watch mode... until the uncertainty in the global markets comes to an end," said K.K. Mital, a fund manager at Escorts Asset Management. "Volatility will continue to be there in the absence of any comfort for investors." Trading activity in Asia was subdued with markets in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Sin
By Ruchira Singh MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's demand for imported silver may stay weak for a fourth month as prices stay high, though buying may pick up later this month with the harvest and the ongoing wedding season, dealers said on Thursday. Silver prices are up nearly 10 percent in 2008, with near month futures on the Multi Commodities Exchange of India Ltd having seen a 21-month high on Feb 1 at 21,980 rupees per kg, dampening demand for the metal. "There has hardly been any import of silver in the last four months," said Suresh Hundia, president of Bombay Bullion Association who is also a large silver trader. "Instead, banks are stuck with silver stocks." A drop to 17,000-19,000 rupees per kg would revive demand for silver, dealers said. Silver scrap sales have increased, meeting the low-key local demand for jewellery, gift items and industrial use, Hundia said. "There is a lot of impure silver coming in from scrap sales that is being refined and
By Biman Mukherji BANGALORE (Reuters) - India will refrain from buying wheat on global markets this year for the first time since 2005 thanks to a bumper harvest and replenished reserves, helping cool record high world prices, an industry official said on Thursday. India's absence from the international market after two years of imports, and expectations of a bigger Australian crop, will help tame wheat prices that have doubled in the past eight months, Vinod Kapoor, former president of the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India, told Reuters in an interview. "There will be no potential for imports, unless the government really fails on the procurement front," he said ahead of a two-day conference that begins here on Friday. He added that the government, which buys wheat from farmers at a fixed price to maintain strategic reserves to run various welfare programmes, may have to increase its base price but should still manage to meet its needs domestically. "
By Swati Pandey MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian farmers may plant less mint this year as low prices for the crop may prompt them to shift to more profitable crops, a trade body official said. Prices of mentha oil, obtained from mint, are lower this year after production almost doubled in 2007 to 30,000-32,000 tonnes. Farmers increased production last year, encouraged by higher prices after futures trading was introduced in the commodity. "The farmer is not getting the price he used to get. So, he may shift to more profitable crops like mustard seed or paddy," said Sunil Agarwal, president of Chandausi Menthol Association" "This year, only 15 percent area has been sown till now. Last year, almost 50 percent sowing was done by this time," he said. Chandausi, in Uttar Pradesh, is one of the largest producing areas of mint, used in drugs, confectionary and body-care products. Other areas are Barabanki, Rampur and Sambal. Farmers are getting a price of 475 ru
Ernie Els shot a horror quadruple bogey to lag 10 behind leader Jyoti Randhawa at the inaugural Indian Masters on Thursday, with the local star eagling the last for a two shot lead. Irishman Damien McGrane played two rounds with Tiger Woods at the Dubai Desert Classic last week and the world number one's magic clearly rubbed off as he fired a 67 to lie second, alongside Englishman Richard Finch. Rejuvenated Dane Thomas Bjorn, Delhi resident Shiv Kapur, and Spain's Jose Mauel Lara lurk one further back at the 2.5 million dollars event, while US veteran Mark O'Meara rolled back the years with a 69. Randhawa, who posted four top-10 finishes on the European Tour last year, used his local knowledge to good effect, putting together three birdies and two eagles. But fellow Indian Jeev Milkha Singh, seen as a favourite to win, succumbed to the pressure with a poor 77. Randhawa has won on the Lodhi course five times before and he thought back to those victories to tailor his game. "My pas

Jyoti Randhawa capitalized on his familiarity with the Delhi Golf Course to fire a seven-under par 65 and take the opening round lead in the Indian Masters golf tournament Thursday.Winner of four Asian Tour events on this course, Randhawa shot an bogey-free round and carded eagles twice over the last five holes - including the 18th - to take a two-stroke lead over Richard Finch and Damien McGrane, who shared the second spot on five-under par 67.One stroke behind them were Thomas Bjorn, Jose Manuel Lara and local star Shiv Kapur with four-under par 68.The US$2.5 million (1.71 million) Indian Masters marked the arrival of European Tour in India. The opening day saw world No. 4 Ernie Els struggle to a three-over par 75 that placed him in the tied 77nd spot. Experiencing a harrowing time, Els took nine shots on his par-five ninth - the course's 18th - as he twice went into the bushes and took penalty drops on both occasions.``Nine strokes on the 18th don't surprise me, I've seen bigger numb
That's the last thing the Indian Army would resort to, but the Army Chief seems to be desperate about draft or conscription. Till now, India has the largest army on the basis of voluntary services, the military draft has never been imposed on its citizens. But thanks to the tech and economic boom, most of the individuals are being lost to corporate giants. In the last three to four years, there has been a steady decline in number of candidates appearing for the NDA or IMA exams. One of the most important factors which still bugs the indian soldier is the salary. Although the government has provided lots of other goodies, like free ration(foodgrains), Rs.20 lakh security cover, separate living quarters, and many such crunchies, the payscales are too low. As a result, it fails to attract the youth. But, a career in the armed forces fulfills one wish - job security. Since it's a government job, your job is highly secured. LONDON: Indian Tamarai has blossomed in Britain -- the popular restaurant chain added another feather to its reputation for culinary excellence, this time by winning an award for the Best Night Bar in London.Tamarai (meaning lotus in Tamil), India's Old World Hospitality group's third London restaurant after Chor Bizarre in Mayfair and Sitaaray, has got the accolade at the Theme Bar Awards 2008. The award by Britain's widely read magazine, Theme, celebrates the best in the industry bringing together excellence in modern drinks, design and hospitality in different categories. "lt's an exceptional honour for a bar operated by an Indian company in the most competitive food and drinks city in the world," said a spokesperson for the group which operates the Habitat World at India Habitat Centre as well as 12 other restaurants in Delhi. The restaurant was last year awarded 'The Best Wine List in London' by 'The Independent' newspaper and 'The Best Pan-Fusion Food in London' by the 'Evening
The grievances of Malay Indians will be addressed and attempts will be made by the government to resolve them soon, Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has pledged. Addressing some 3,900 delegates at the Malaysian Indian Congress's (MIC) one-day special convention at the Putra World Trade Centre here on Sunday, the New Strait Times quoted Razak as saying: "We have to address their grievances as fast as possible, just as much as we have to address the grievances of the other communities." Najib, however, did not elaborate on what more would be done. "We are going to do something more for the Indian community. The mechanism on how we are going to do this will be discussed at the cabinet. I cannot divulge what happens at cabinet meetings, but a lot of time is spent discussing Indian issues," he said to a standing ovation from the crowd. The deputy prime minister's assurance came after MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu had told the convention
The people of Punjab have strongly rebutted Pakistan Radio allegations that the Central Government has discriminatory attitude towards them. In one of its recent broadcasts 'Punjabi Durbar' programme of Pakistan Radio has alleged that the Centre is diverting water from Punjab to other areas by constructing canals and dams. A S Prashar, who is a senior journalist, has termed this as propaganda, which seeks to spread falsehood. "No water has gone out of Punjab. If there is water crisis in Punjab and agriculture is being affected, the farmers of Punjab would have sought some alternative to their cycle of wheat and paddy," Parashar suggested. Work on the Sutlej-Yamuna canal has been stalled for over ten years. The Reddy Commission, he pointed out, is looking into the matter related to Sutlej Yamuna link canal. According to experts, Punjab is a riparian state and the State Government is free to take its own decisions and it was not true that required water is being

By P.K. Balachandran, Colombo : Tourist arrivals from India and Britain are keeping Sri Lanka's tourist industry afloat amid war and hostile travel advisories from several Western countries.Giant neighbour India as well as Britain, from which Sri Lanka got freedom in February 1948, accounted for over 40 percent of the 494,008 tourist arrivals in the scenic island nation in 2007.India accounted for 21.4 percent of the arrivals and Britain 19 percent. With earnings over $410 million per year, tourism is the fourth largest foreign exchange earner for Sri Lanka.India has been the top contributor from 2005. Indians outstripped Britons for the first time in 2005 with 113,323 arrivals out of a total of 549,308. India still is on the top with 106,067 arrivals, out of a total of 494,008, in 2007. So the shops stand to gain from Indians.
Singapore: Travellers from India and China boosted passenger traffic at Singapore's Changi Airport to an all-time high of 36.7 million last year, 4.8 percent higher than 2006, the state's civil aviation authority said Monday.Visits by Indians and Chinese increased by 15.6 percent and 12.6 percent from the previous year. "Emerging markets such as Vietnam, Russia and South Africa also saw double-digit growth in traffic at 24.4 percent, 27.7 percent and 15.1 percent respectively," the authority said."We got off to a good start in 2008," said Chief Executive Officer Lim Kim Choon, citing the opening of a third terminal. The airport "is in good stead to tap on the strong demand for air travel," he noted. The traditional peak travel month of December also set a record for highest monthly traffic. More than 3.5 million passengers went through the airport, a 3 percent increased over the corresponding month in 2006.On the cargo front, 1.89 million tonnes of air freight was handled in 2007, a mar
By Ben Hirschler DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Ranbaxy Laboratories, India's top drugmaker, is exploring "innovative" deals to lift its share of the home market by between 50 and 100 percent in the coming years, its chief executive said on Wednesday. Malvinder Singh said consolidation within the Indian pharmaceuticals industry was tricky, since many companies are family-owned. But he believes deals that are smartly structured -- including possible alliances -- provide a way forward. "India is a highly fragmented market. We as the largest company have only 5 percent market share. It is clearly not enough for us," he told Reuters at the World Economic Forum annual meeting. "It is my intention to work towards a 7.5 to 10 percent market share. It is not going to come in one year but over the next years that is where we need to be." Ranbaxy last week reported a better-than-expected 1 percent rise in quarterly net profit, helped by strong growth in eme
Scholars participating in the conference on “Rethinking Religion in India” on Wednesday here were still trying to understand religion as is practiced in the sub-continent. MUMBAI (Reuters) - The chairman of India's biggest commercial bank said on Wednesday interest rates in India may have peaked, a day after the U.S. Federal Reserve slashed rates and prompted calls for cuts in India. State Bank of India expects loans growth to pick up in the March quarter and is on track for a planned $4.3 billion rights share issue despite the recent volatility in the Indian equities market, O.P. Bhatt said. "I think interest rates have peaked," he told reporters on the sidelines of a conference. Asked when rates will come down, Bhatt said: "I would not like to comment." A leading industry lobby group on Wednesday urged the central bank to cut interest rates to strengthen domestic economic fundamentals against the backdrop of an uncertain global environment. India's central bank is set to review policy on Jan. 29. The Fed cut its benchmark interest rate by 75 basis points on Tuesday, its biggest reduction in the target lending rate in

Indian equities registered one of the steepest falls ever during intra-day trading Monday, resulting in a key index shedding close to 2,000 points, as bears tightened their grip on the market amid worrying global cues.About half-hour before the end of trading, the 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was ruling at 17,621.40 points after a loss of 1,392.30 points, or 7.32 percent, over the previous day's close. This actually marked a small recovery for the index, which had plunged almost 2,000 points at 16,951.50 points midway into the trading session, with not a single scrip in the 30-share basket trading in positive territory."There is absolute panic. Fear has taken over, as possible recession in the US is appearing to be around the horizon. Heavy selling by foreign funds is also adding to the gloom," said an analyst with a leading brokerage here.Over the past week, the barometer index has shed as much as 3,031.30 points, or 14.62 percent, indicating the
Indian team for the One Day Internationals and Twenty Twenty was announced earlier today. The greatest surprise in the squad is that both Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly were dropped. I wonder why they have made such a gamble by bringing all the inexperienced players to Australia. Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be the captain. Pakistani authorities sent as many as five fishermen to jail after a local court found them guilty of entering into Pakistan’s territorial waters. These fishermen were arrested on January 15 and handed over to the police on January 16. They were found fishing illegally in Pakistan territorial waters about 90 nautical miles from the coast. Pakistani authorities arrested them and seized their boat, the Dawn quoted Pakistan Police sources as saying. The names of those arrested are Karwa, son of Dewa; Jewa, son of Cheevi; Bhola, son of Jamid; Kanak, son of Jiwa; and Naro, son of Ram Bhai. The five were on-board a vessel, Jalpari, police said. Earlier, on Saturday, six other Indian fishermen were nabbed on the same charges. Their boat was seized. After obtaining their remand from court, they were sent to prison on Monday. (ANI)
New research by a scientist of Indian origin, has indicated that it took a much longer time for ecological systems of our planet to recover fully after a devastating extinction event which had occurred 250 million years ago, 30 million years to be precise. According to Sarda Sahney and Professor Michael Benton from the University of Bristol, UK, about 250 million years ago, at the end of the Permian period, a major extinction event killed over 90 per cent of life on earth, including insects, plants, marine animals, amphibians, and reptiles. This major event had caused the worldwide destruction of ecosystems and restructuring of communities, which led the surviving organisms struggling to recover. Though previous research had indicated that life bounced back quite quickly after the event, it was mostly in the form of ‘disaster taxa’, which means opportunistic organisms that filled the empty ecospace left behind by the extinction. Now, a new resea
Inadvertent crossing into Pakistan could take many years for an Indian to return home, but this is not the case with Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh, who crossed Indo-Pak border to take a stroll in neighbour's territory without any legal travel documents on Friday. Accompanied by some Indian officials, including Deputy Commissioner, Amritsar, K S Pannu and some Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, Ramesh went up to the conference hall of Pakistan Ranges, about 40 yards inside Pakistan. Interestingly, the minister was not received by any of the Pakistani officials, in contrast to the protocol when a foreign high official visits another country. "I went only two steps and didn't go to Pakistan," said Ramesh, when asked how could he cross the international border without any legal papers. BSF Inspector General Arvind Ranjan said: "We don't allow common man to cross the border without visa or legal documents, but we ourselves go to attend the meetings a
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - The leader of Malaysia's main ethnic Indian party on Saturday urged deputies to be vigilant after one of the members was shot dead, state media said, amid a row in the community over racial discrimination. S. Krishnasamy, 61, was shot dead on Friday in the office of his party, the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), in the southern city of Johor Baru. Police and the party said the motive behind the attack was not clear. "I cannot say whether it has something to do with politics, a private matter or in connection with the constituency. An elected representative has many connections," MIC president S. Samy Vellu was quoted by state news agency Bernama as saying. Politics is in turmoil among the minority ethnic Indian population after more than 10,000 Indians staged an anti-government protest in November to complain of racial discrimination. The activists accused the MIC of selling out their interests. Vellu said some ethnic Indians were trying
