  • How the food industry is deceiving you (Documentary)
While surfing the stumbleupon health page I found a link to this YouTube video which was titled "How the Food Industry is deceiving you". The actual title of the documentary appeared to be "How to get fat without really trying", a Peter Jennings report, for ABC in 2004. Though already 4 years old, the documentary is still just as relevant today as it was then. Food industry has been influencing what we eat for years and it still does today.
  • Bloggers own the music industry's ass. Or at least the love handles.
Well, maybe not, but a study conducted by New York University's Stern Business School, Does Chatter Matter? The Impact of User-Generated Content on Music Sales, reports that albums which build a number of blog mentions during the time around their release do better than you might otherwise expect:Our findings are as follows: (a) the volume of blog posts about an album is positively correlated with future sales, (b) greater increases in an artist’s Myspace friends week over week have a weaker correlation to higher future sales, (c) traditional factors are still relevant – albums released by major labels and albums with a number of reviews from mainstream sources like Rolling Stone also tended to have higher future sales. We're not entirely sure this should be unexpected, as it's effectively saying 'if people are talking about your product, it must be good for sales' - a truism advertising men from the days of the front of the twentieth century would understand. But given that major l

  • Only three percent of Pak businesses, industry paid taxes in 2007
The Federal Board of revenue in Pakistan has said in its latest report that only three percent of the country’s business outfits have paid taxes for fiscal 2007-08. The News quoted a senior official of the board as saying that out of the 45,000 industrial and commercial units registered in Pakistan, only 1,352 major units contributed 94.1 per cent of the total tax collection for the year. "This is most alarming situation for the economy that slumps in the tide of rising terror that disrupts the growth and even the operation of trade and industry, leading to downswing in tax collection by 23 per cent in June-January period of 2007-08 (current fiscal year)," the official said. This slump has forced the FBR to down-fix the tax collection target for the year 2007-08 by Rs.150 billion, FBR sources said. Last year, the collection stood at Rs.841.4 billion, and if the FBR collects Rs.850 billion this year, the net improvement would be that of Rs.8.6 billion, probably the lowe

  • Lenovo declared quiting mobile phone industry
Lenovo, the giant Chinese electronics manufacturer mainly known for producing desktop PCs and laptops, announced it will quit the mobile phone industry and sell its mobile divisionfor $100 million to Legend Holdings Ltd., one of its main shareholders.2007 was a great financial year for Lenovo, with overall profits of $171 million, a huge increase when compared to 2006's profits that raised to $57.7. Despite this, the company's mobile business is far from being profitable, as it made losses of 134 million CNY (about $18.6 million) in the last year.Lenovo entered the mobile business in 2001 and limited its handset distribution to China, but in the last years it started producing devices based on Windows Mobile with the intention of penetrating other markets, like Europe and North America. However, this did not happen, and the Lenovo handsets remained in China. Apparently, the Chinese market – where phones from Nokia and Motorola have a huge demand – is not suitable for Lenovo's mobil
  • Indian tourists keep Sri Lankan tourist industry afloat
By P.K. Balachandran, Colombo : Tourist arrivals from India and Britain are keeping Sri Lanka's tourist industry afloat amid war and hostile travel advisories from several Western countries.Giant neighbour India as well as Britain, from which Sri Lanka got freedom in February 1948, accounted for over 40 percent of the 494,008 tourist arrivals in the scenic island nation in 2007.India accounted for 21.4 percent of the arrivals and Britain 19 percent. With earnings over $410 million per year, tourism is the fourth largest foreign exchange earner for Sri Lanka.India has been the top contributor from 2005. Indians outstripped Britons for the first time in 2005 with 113,323 arrivals out of a total of 549,308. India still is on the top with 106,067 arrivals, out of a total of 494,008, in 2007. Unlike in the past, the Indian is welcome today in Sri Lanka."Indians stay in three-star to five-star hotels. And they do a lot of shopping, unlike Westerners. So the shops stand to gain from Indians.
  • Music industry tries carrot after years of stick
By Kate Holton CANNES, France (Reuters) - Away from the headlines of job losses, grumbling artists and falling global sales, the music industry is trying new business models to boost digital sales and offset the decline in CDs. At the annual industry meeting on the French coast this week, much of the talk was dominated by a new service called Qtrax, which plastered all available space with huge posters declaring the CD dead and estimating that over 1.2 billion illegal downloads would be made during the event itself. Qtrax plans to offer millions of tracks for free with the backing of the music majors, though on Monday it was still in talks for deals with the four big music groups. It plans to act as a legal online file-sharing site, funded through advertising, and it is one of several services that have been launched after criticism that the music industry has been distracted by the fight against piracy, when it should have been developing alternative services. • Goa drops contentious industry zones plan
MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's tourist state of Goa has dropped plans to build industrial enclaves, officials said on Wednesday, after protests that reflect wider opposition to similar projects across the country. India's rush to build Special Economic Zones -- or Chinese-style tax-free industry zones to encourage exports -- has generated trouble, and in some cases individual projects have been shelved after violence. But Goa is the first to abandon all plans to build SEZs following strong protests from political and environmental groups who say a proliferation of industry could ruin the state's fragile ecology and hurt tourism, the mainstay of its economy. "It has been decided to cancel all the projects now for various reasons," Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat told Reuters. Elsewhere across the country, forcible buying of land from farmers has been the main reason for violent protests and cancellation of some SEZ projects, including one in West Bengal. Clashes over a p

So, empowered by last year’s success, I’ve decided to do it again. Here are my educated guesses, based on nothing more than closely watching the industry and entirely free of insider information, for developments we may see in 2008. • The Record Industry Has Lost Their Minds
According to them, it's illegal to transfer your CD's to your computer. What all this comes down to is, the record companies have diluted the music world and less people want to buy their junk. There is so many crappy bands/singers now and they all sound the same. Even some of my favorite bands are rushing to get music out and that is even crap. There may be one or two songs on an entire album that I want to hear. I use iTunes (I know, but there isn't a better alternative with a large selection) and rarely download an entire album. There's no way I will spend $15 or so dollars on a CD for at most, two songs. I can buy and download the songs I want for 99 cents or an album for $9.90. I'm waiting for the RIAA to come up with self-destructing CD's that explode after 10 plays. On with the article. Now, in an unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the industry is taking its argument agai

  • Reverend and the music industry remakers
How huge would you say Reverend and The Makers are? Big enough for their poster to hover in the background of some scenes of Corrie; had the Melody Maker still been going, they'd have been in with a shout of a Christmas double issue cover shoot (some sort of pun on Reverend/Nativity, we'd guess). But they're hardly a global-straddling brand, like Prince or Radiohead. They're not even as big as Bush when Bush turned their back on traditional labels.Which makes the band's decision to release an album for free, without bothering to get their label involved, or to charge for it, all the more interesting. Big labels are getting used to established acts telling them the balance of power has changed; now smaller labels are getting the same treatment from smaller bands. And, naturally, they're not happy.Mark Jones, boss of R&TM's label, Wall Of Sound, is upset:: “There’s a validity in that [releasing the songs acoustically, free, before doing a full album], but maybe he should have discuss

  • Chris Rock Criticizes The Music Industry
And I agree!Chris says:"Music kind of sucks. Nobody's into being a musician. Everybody's getting their mogul on. You've been so infiltrated by this corporate mentality that all the time you'd spend getting great songs together, you're busy doing nine other things that have nothing to do with art. You know how shitty Stevie Wonder's songs would have been if he had to run a fuckin' clothing company and a cologne line? … Rap sucks, for the most part. Not all rap, but as an art form it's just not at its best moment. Sammy The Bull would have made a shitty album. And I don't really have a desire to hear [billionaire] Warren Buffett's album - or the new CD by Paul Allen. That's what everybody's aspiring to be."Which brings us to my rant: Why don't people care about the music these days? Why is music simply viewed as just another platform to rake in cash? I'm tired of seeing these supposed musicians slapping their name on any and everything out of greed. Clothing lines, perfumes, cellphones

  • I Want You! To Join Our Industry.
One of the most interesting things I have noticed about this business is the type of clientele we deal with. I have had the good fortune of working within the schematic of many different types of business ideals. To name some of the catagories; spa's, med spa's, anti-aging spa's, plastic surgery center's and of course physician's offices. Lately the most common practices I observe seem to have a "open a spa and they will come" mentality. This is really not good for any of us. There are too many people opening too many spas and med spa's without the slightest idea. Too many clients are getting bad services which are frequently over overpromised and underdelivered. This undermines the hard work the rest of us have done over the years to establish our own credability within the industry. The newest boom is laser. Those of us that have been in the business for a while understand that most laser companies just want to sell their product. They too will overpromise just to sell that 200k machi

The successful implementation of the "corporate business solution" has been behind the growth and diversification of many businesses across different geographical domains. This and other similar launches have clouded the telecommunications landscape and have enhanced the recall value of the term - “business VOIP.” Corporate and business users are increasingly managing and routing their calls through high speed Internet connections and PBX systems are almost done away with.VoIP call termination services, designed for business users, are now available at industry leading prices. As a matter of fact, the cost of making calls using business VoIP solutions is significantly less as compared to traditional phone systems.
