  • General Insanity
It's been an odd day.Last night I stayed up quite late watching a movie, and I had no business doing that. In spite of it, I woke this morning literally one minute prior to my alarm going off. Within moments it was clear that I was very sick to my stomach. It wasn't the normal anxiety, though; it was a feeling I remember quite well from my youth. This is disgusting, but when I was a little kid my sinuses were so bad that they'd drain into my stomach and I'd throw up all the time during allergy season. I've outgrown the worst of it and that hasn't happened to me for a very long time. In fact, I've made no secret that I'm emetophobic. Being "physically ill" as I call it is very rare these days, thank God.So I thought I'd go ahead and go about my business, reasoning that the condition would improve as I got moving. I was wrong. About an hour and half later I was rushing back here. I got to my place and immediately threw up once, and then felt better. But that feeling of dread b
  • Pre-Travel Insanity
Another trip and I, yet again, am cleaning at 12:00 a.m.  There is no end in sight. I have this compulsion to clean the house to such a degree before we leave, that when we return, I feel invited into our sparkling house.  This has gone on for as long as I can remember and no [...]
  • The Age of Insanity: Modernity and Mental Health
Author: John F. Schumaker Paperback: 240 pagesPublisher: Praeger PublishersLanguage: EnglishISBN: 0275970523(R)The often misunderstood "modern person syndrome" is a disorder linked to the conditions of living in our contemporary society. The author argues that the conditions of modernity have introduced new processes, forces, and cultural motivations that have major implications for all aspects of mental health and social well being. While modernity offers unprecedented opportunities for personal enhancement and creative expression, there is mounting evidence of a mental health crisis that demands the immediate attention of mental health professionals. In order to address the new challenges that have arisen under conditions of modernity, mental health professionals must rethink fundamental assumptions about the relationship between society and mental health, as well as the impact of modern social concerns upon individual behavior and psychological well being. This innovative approa
  • Smitherman Inspires More Insanity from The Enquirer
Photo courtesy of here. I must say that this morning’s Enquirer has me totally confused.  It features a headline which reads ”Smitherman to run in defiance.” It seems to be based on a press statement issued yesterday from the local NAACP.  But I just re-read that statement three times, as well as The Enquirer article, and it really looks like the paper is just plain making things up!  I mean, I’ve been complaining about The Enquirer for some time, but it’s so strange to have the document in my hand, and to read their purely fictitious take on that same document! Here is the meat of the Enquirer story by Howard Wilkinson: Cincinnati’s NAACP branch has decided to defy the national leadership of the civil-rights organization and allow its president, Christopher Smitherman, to remain in office while he runs this fall for Cincinnati City Council. An official of the national NAACP office in Baltimore told The Enquirer last week that t
  • This weeks sign of the apocalypse: iPhone insanity
As Justin Verlander is just having one of those games, as he couldn't find the strike zone even if you gave him a map, GPS, Google Earth, and a bloodhound trained to find home plate, allow me to go off on a non-sports tangent. Or more correctly, a rant...I've been watching the jaw droppingly intense Apple iPhone insanity all day. If you read the tech blogs at all, the "Jesus Phone" dominated their posting for most of the week, and has reached a fever pitch today. The MSM has jumped in feet first, national and local, interviewing people who have so much time on their hands, they can afford to que up for a God damn cell phone. This phone will make you smarter, sexier, richer, cooler, and guarantees you'll get laid, if you believe God Steve JobsAdmittedly, it's a gorgeous, high tech God damn cell phone, but it's a God damn cell phone all the same.I find it hard to believe that someone would wait in line for 8, 12, 24, or more hours just for the privilege of spending over 600 bones on
  • Tommy Thompson Has A Degree Of Insanity
This last week, Republican presidential candidate Tommy Thompson did a fine job of showing how right wing ideology is capable of complaining about a problem even while supporting the very same course of action that brought that problem about in the first place. Tommy Thompson was campaigning in Iowa when he told an audience that the Bush Administration’s conduct of the war has “a degree of insanity stapled with it”. Thompson also complained that, “Eight and a half billion dollars a month and we still do not have a plan on how we’re going to win the war or win the peace.” Tommy Thompson also said that, if he were elected President, he would nominate Colin Powell to serve as his Secretary of State. It was Colin Powell, some will remember, who helped George W. Bush to the United Nations about fake evidence for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Colin Powell also had a special responsibility, as Secretary of State and former Chair of the Joint Chiefs
  • Insanity or Bad Reasoning
During a recent meetup of like-minded people, we discussed the notion that personal feelings/experiences somehow validate religion for some individuals. We all thought the notion was ridiculous because millions, if not billions, of people from differing and completely contradictory religions believe that their personal feelings somehow speak of the truth behind their particular religion. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that personal feelings are unreliable when determining whether a religion is true. The group was more interested, however, in the ramifications and nature of the experiences people claim to have. For example, some people believe that they were struck by an idea (or revelation) so awesome that it must have been divinely inspired. Some suggested that such a line of reasoning speaks of how people's faith in God may actually belittle the abilities of the individual. Others thought that outsourcing one's own intelligence to a supernatural deity may make one feel less r
