  • Foreign investors hold their nerve in Pakistan
By Sahar Ahmed KARACHI (Reuters) - Foreign investors who have stuck with Pakistan are clearly made of stern stuff as it heads towards an election on Feb. 18 that, while not a presidential poll, could put President Pervez Musharraf's future in doubt. While the world frets over a nuclear-armed Muslim nation that al Qaeda wants to destabilise and is still reeling from the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, the investment community has largely held its nerve. "Formation of a stable democratic government will be the most important event to consider," said Mark Mobius, executive chairman at Templeton Asset Management Ltd. "Investors are still keen on Pakistan and there has been no sharp withdrawal of capital from Pakistan despite the recent events as well as the financial turmoil across the world," Mobius said. "In fact, markets in Pakistan have been fairly resilient." The Karachi stock market was among the best-performing markets in

  • Avoiding Panic Helps Long-Term Investors
by Tim Paradis Investor Urgency Builds As Market Swoons but Answer Is the Same: Don't Panic Don't panic. That advice could probably serve as a stand-in for "hello" at many brokerages these days. With Wall Street stumbling -- particularly since the beginning of the year -- uneasy investors are calling on financial advisers with an urgency not seen since the start of the decade.Like last time, when the economy was reeling from the flameout of technology stocks and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, long-term investors who can resist giving in and selling out will likely emerge the strongest. But as before, the latest stock market pullback has unnerved individual investors, many of whom are ferrying money from equities into bonds and cash. In the week ended Jan. 15, when many analysts were predicting an imminent cut in interest rates, assets in money market funds ballooned by $15.96 billion to a high of $3.17 trillion, according to iMoneyNet.And investors pulled an estimated $18.2
  • Recession or Not, Investors Have Choices
By Tim Paradis, AP Business Writer While Wall Street Debates Likelihood of Recession, Investors Shouldn't Wait to Place Bets NEW YORK (AP) -- While Wall Street debates whether the U.S. is headed for recession, investors don't have to wait for an answer -- they can take steps to limit their risks beyond simply defensive moves like rushing into bonds or converting investments to cash.A slowing economy requires investors to become more selective and take a long-term view while also looking for stocks and other investments that might fare better in a sputtering economy.Companies involved in agriculture, fertilizer and commodities are poised to do well because of increasing demand from fast-growing economies including China and India, said Todd Salamone, vice president of research at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati."Despite all the talk about recession, despite all the slow growth -- these are the sectors that have bucked the trend," he said.Salamone noted that while these st

  • Chidamabaram dispels investors' fears
Finance Minister P. We should not be bothered by the West's economy," Chidramabaram told reporters after trading was suspended for an hour at the Bombay Stock Exchange.Markets, however, recovered after reopening at 10.55 a.m. after the benchmark Sensex fell to a low of 15,576.30 within minutes of opening, crossing the lower circuit limit of 10 percent. On Monday, the 30-share barometer tumbled by 1,408 points on concerns regarding the US economy going into recession. The finance ministry asserted that Monday's sharp fall in share prices did not reflect any change in the fundamentals of the Indian economy. In a statement released Monday, the government advised investors not to be led by market rumours or any unwarrant
  • Serious Real Estate Investors Need to Build Resource Lists
You may have heard that one of the best ways to make yourself truly wealthy is to become a private real estate investor. While it is true that the millionaire real estate investor does exist in every state in the nation, it can also be a difficult way to begin to build up your own personal fortune. There are more books written and sold each year, on how to become a real estate investor, than on many other topics in business and self-employment. The main reason that the real estate investors get singled out is because their money tends to come in either; large immediate chunks, or as passive income over a long period of time. And as investment strategies go, both of these options can be great. One of the most important parts of becoming a private real estate investor is the process of networking and building resource lists of professionals such as lenders, bankers, seller’s agents, buyer’s agents, real estate investor agents, carpenters, plumbers, etc... who you can call on to help m
  • Beginner Investors - Beware of Target Retirement Date Funds
You may own a target retirement fund if you’re in a 401(k) plan and you signed up but didn’t pick a fund to invest in or you were automatically enrolled. This kind of fund has also become popular with individual beginner investors because it claims to be a “one-decision” fund: it adjusts its investments to become more conservative as you grow older and closer to retirement. The theory is great -- you don’t have to do anything. But the theory is flawed. If you’re 25 or younger your target fund will have a date like 2050. At this distance from retirement, the fund will be predominantly invested in stocks, so an investor needs to understand market cycles or trends to make the most of this investment. You face two problems and an opportunity. The first problem is doing the wrong thing: Buying high and selling low. This happens when you let your emotions make your decisions for you.In a market decline, for example, which happens on the average every four and half years, investors ar

  • Article Nov 1, 2007 : Cautious investors move to cash
By Jeremy Gaunt, European Investment Correspondent LONDON (Reuters) - Worries about the U.S. economy, high oil prices and reverberations from the credit crisis turned long-term investors cautious in October, driving them into cash, Reuters asset allocation polls showed on Wednesday. Surveys of 51 leading investment companies in the United States, continental Europe, Japan and Britain showed investors taking stocks further below their long-term average and lifting cash to the highest level in 2-1/2 years. "The credit crunch is not behind us, it will have a deflationary effect. There is a clear recession threat in the U.S.," said Markus Stadlmann, chief investment officer at VP Bank in Zurich. On average, respondents held 59.8 percent of a mixed portfolio in stocks, down from 60.0 percent in September. Bond holdings dropped to 31.0 percent from 31.2 percent. Both were below their long-term average. But cash holdings -- where investors scurry temporarily in t
  • The Biases Investors Suffer From
I personally feel a host of people lose money in their investment not because of the capricious nature of the stock market but because of biases in the important investment decisions they make. Many investors unwittingly suffer from one form of bias or the other. In this discussion, I will draw the reader’s attention to the various forms of biases that investors suffer from. The biases investors primarily suffer from are: overconfidence, representativeness, conservatism, narrow framing and ambiguity aversion.Self-attribution bias contributes to overconfidence bias. In self-attribution bias the investor is very quick to attribute the good results of investment decisions to himself and blame others or come up with excuses when things don’t work according to plan. This leads to overconfidence in one’s ability to select the right shares for a portfolio. It also leads to an irrational behaviour of not sufficiently diversifying one’s portfolio to reduce risk. Overconfidence bias supp
  • As China's bubble fears grow, choosy investors favor large caps
Beijing -- AS CHINA'S stock markets have zoomed to new highs this year, local investors have become increasingly worried about a bubble and are getting pickier with their choices. The result? The market is going still higher, as investors pour cash into the large companies that dominate the broad indexes. Such stocks are seen as safe and conservative investments in the context of China's market, and are favorites of domestic mutual funds and institutional investors. So even as concerns about a bubble grow, many analysts are still saying that China's biggest listed companies are worth buying, since they are generally seen as well positioned to deliver decent earnings growth at a lower risk. These tend to be state-controlled companies in sectors from energy to telecommunications to metals and real estate. The shares, traded in Shanghai and Shenzhen, are generally off-limits to foreign investors, although shares of some companies also trade in Hong Kong. Also, foreign fund managers who get

  • Private programs, refunds and naive investors
by Tony CliftonImagine you were a scammer. What would you want? What would be your most important goals? To get as much money as you can and to get out clean. Most HYIP investors seem to have problem putting themselves in the scammer's shoes. This of course means that they are honest people and hardly can think like a scammer, but also makes them naive and pliable to fraud. In two occasions I regularly see some otherwise smart people to turn naive when it comes to high yield investing.Private ProgramsIt's widely known that when a program announce going private that often means they are about to scam. However if the program keeps paying after few months of closing for new members, most investors turn into easy believers.Their arguments are simple: "If they were a scam why would they not accept new spends?". "If they were scam, why would they be paying and not just pack and run away?".These arguments of course make sense. But I have answers which also make sense. Let's before that see the ot
  • Investors to Fed: Thanks for nothing
The reckless are getting relief from Bernanke while the prudent are paying the price, argues Fortune's Allan Sloan.FORTUNE MagazineBy Allan Sloan, Fortune senior-editor-at-large(Fortune Magazine) -- One of the core principles of the U.S. medical profession is the Hippocratic oath, the most famous part of which is "Do no harm." It's too bad that the governors of the Federal Reserve Board don't have to take such a pledge when they assume office, because their recent interest rate cut has done a lot of harm to those of us who've managed our finances prudently.Even though the Fed's stated reason for cutting short-term interest rates by half a point was to help keep the economy from falling into recession, anyone who's been paying attention knows that a major motivation - if not the major motivation - was to try to calm the turbulence that has been roiling the markets since August. The players in the biggest trouble, of course, were the ones who'd taken the biggest fliers in junk mortgages,

It's no secret by now that Costa Rica is the real estate market on this side of the world to be investing in. Any of them can be successful investors in the Costa Rica real estate market because the locales and types of investment opportunities are just as diverse as Costa Rica's terrain.Generally, if an investor does some research before he / she buys, that person will turn a profit. The questions are: How much and how fast? The answers to those questions are dependent upon one thing: Knowledge. It's as simple as that. I've heard of people making 50% of their initial investment back within six months and others doubling or tripling their investment in less than two years! Typically though, people choosing to invest in Costa Rica real estate that are experiencing extraordinary returns are doing so because they've heeded my advice, lite

  • Investors: Now's The Time To Buy!
According to a recent article in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, saavy investors are taking advantage of the ability to buy low in today's slow market. When interest rates were at all-time lows and mortgage companies were offering creative packages to get people into houses, many people got loans that offered the first 1-2 years as interest only loans. The idea was that people could go ahead and get into a house with low payments, and after a year or two, the payments would increase. Boy, did they increase!I received calls from many owners who had payments double! These owners, despite their best efforts, were not able to keep up with the payments and they lost their homes. As a matter of fact, Georgia is leading the nation right now in forclosures. The deals - they are really everywhere. But what would you do with an investment property? You rent it out. There will be a big market for rentals in the next 3 years because so many people who lost their homes will be renting whi
  • "Stupid" investors, rejoice!
Ben Stein Economist, writer, lawyer, and actorNo one is too stupid to make money in the stock market. But there are many who are too smart to make money. To make money, at least in the postwar world, all you have to do is buy the broad indexes domestically--both in the emerging world and in the developed world--and, to throw in a little certainty about your old age, maybe buy some annuities. To lose money, pretend you're really, really clever, and that by reading financial journalism and watching CNBC, you can outguess the market day by day. Along with that, you must have absolutely no sense of proportion about money and the world at large. For example, right now we are stewing over what everyone calls "the subprime mess" and going crazy, mourning all day and into the night--falling over ourselves to get all of the misery right, to paraphrase Evita. I'm writing this on Aug. 13, 2007, and in the past four or five weeks, the markets of the U.S. have lost some 7% of their value, or about $1
  • Big investors fleeing risk
LONDON (Reuters) -- Big-money institutional investors have turned more risk averse than at any time since August last year, taking positions they typically do not reverse quickly, State Street data showed Friday. The U.S. financial services firm said its clients, who keep some $13.04 trillion with it as a custodian, have moved into what it called a "safety first" regime. This is characterized by moving from emerging to developed market equities, embracing bonds and unwinding currency "carry" trades.Institutional investors tend to take a longer-term view of markets than other investors, so shifts in their strategy can have a significant impact on a market's recovery. The firm said that since September last year investors had been taking positions reflective either of abundant liquidity or leverage opportunities."A quick move back to risk-seeking is unlikely given ... previous history ... and the backdrop of markets," State Street said in a note.Specifically, the latest data showed risk av

  • Five Mistakes Investors Just Can't Afford
By Roger Ibbotson Traditional concepts of finance are built upon the idea of efficient markets. In that world, investors are rational, unbiased, logical, and risk-averse. When investors act in accord with these qualities, a stock's price equals its value, and no trading strategy should beat the market. But those of us who invested in the stock market in the late 1990s suspect that might not always be the case--and we may have even been guilty of a little "irrational exuberance" ourselves. We're Consistently IrrationalFor decades, psychologists have been studying human decision-making and discovered that we are systematically irrational. We tend to consistently act in an irrational manner in certain situations and when making certain decisions. When this discovery was later applied to investing, the field of behavioral finance was born.Though this field of study has been around for some time, it gained fresh attention following the technology bubble.
