  • Stop Treating Sharia-Supreme Iraq Like Post-War Japan
Diana West - It isn't just that the total defeat and utter devastation of Japan nullifies the comparison with Iraq (which it does). There is something else. There is the completely different U.S. approach to Japan's animating, warlike state religion of Shintoism, which, not incidentally, bears striking similarities to the animating, warlike state religion of Islam.History shows that the conditions that drove the model transformation of Japan do not exist today with regard to the Islamic Middle East. We're going to need another strategy -- for starters, an immigration policy and new laws to halt the creep of Sharia -- to ward off the Islamization of the West.

  • Arming Iraq's Future Street Gangs?
There is growing concern that local militias now allied with the U.S. are turning their guns on each other as the U.S. prepares to pull back its presence. These groups have been tasked with pacifying some of the most restive corners of Iraq — contributing to the measure of stability enjoyed by the country in the last few months. "We're paying them and training them so they're effective," says Lawrence Korb, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, of America's new partners, many of whom are former insurgents. But there are signs that these groups, called Concerned Local Citizens (CLCs) by the U.S. military, are already turning on each other in competition for territory. More...

Dabbagh said the talks with U.S. officials would begin in the third week of February but did not give a date. Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari has said he hopes the pact will be concluded by July. • Bush understates challenges in Iraq, Afghanistan
By Arshad Mohammed WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush offered relatively upbeat assessments of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that failed to address how hard it may be for his successor to stabilize them, analysts said. In his final State of the Union speech on Monday, the outgoing Republican president argued that over the past year Iraq has seen declining violence and growing political reconciliation among its main Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish ethnic groups. In Afghanistan, he described "a nation that was once a safe haven for al Qaeda" as "a young democracy where boys and girls are going to school, new roads and hospitals are being built, and people are looking to the future with new hope." In both cases, analysts said Bush painted an unduly rosy picture and omitted key factors that threaten their stability. "There has been a substantial decrease in violence (in Iraq) -- that is undeniable -- but there really has been little fund

  • Ahmadinejad to make landmark visit to Iraq - ministry
By Wisam Mohammed BAGHDAD (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accepted an invitation to visit Baghdad, Iraq's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, a landmark trip that would make him the first leader of Iran to visit its former foe. Iran and Iraq fought an eight-year war in the 1980s in which hundreds of thousands were killed, but relations have improved since Saddam Hussein was ousted in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and a Shi'ite Islamist-led government came to power. "President Ahmadinejad has accepted an invitation from President (Jalal) Talabani to come to Iraq," Iraqi deputy Foreign Minister Labeed Abawi told Reuters. An aide to Ahmadinejad, who asked not to be identified, said: "We have heard about it but no date has been scheduled." Salah al-Ubaidi, a senior official in Sadr's political movement in the holy Shi'ite city of Najaf, accused "criminal elements" inside Iraqi security forces of attacking Sadr's followers and Mehdi Army fighters. "If the government security forces do not stop their campaigns of detention and arresting our followers, we may reconsider our decision to freeze the Mehdi Army," Ubaidi told Reuters. The six months of the declared ceasefire run out next month.
