Diana West - It isn't just that the total defeat and utter devastation of Japan nullifies the comparison with Iraq (which it does). There is something else. There is the completely different U.S. approach to Japan's animating, warlike state religion of Shintoism, which, not incidentally, bears striking similarities to the animating, warlike state religion of Islam.History shows that the conditions that drove the model transformation of Japan do not exist today with regard to the Islamic Middle East. We're going to need another strategy -- for starters, an immigration policy and new laws to halt the creep of Sharia -- to ward off the Islamization of the West.
JAPAN'S GDP apparently grew at an annual rate of 3.7 per cent in the December quarter, seemingly in dramatic rebuttal of fears the world's second largest economy was slipping back into...

Ive lived in Japan for more than 8 months, and Ive already signed up another year in Osaka so Ill be here for a while. In those 8 months Ive already been back home twice and just after I hit my 1-year-in-Japan mark, I head on home again for a third visit. But during this years Obon Im staying put in Japan, because this time my mother, brother and stepfather will be coming to Japan to visit me!!! Of course as the family travel agent, I was the one doing the searching for good airline deals (its a pretty expensive venture when youre traveling with 3 people). Once, I found a good deal I had problems actually booking it due to credit card limits and a slow computer. That was just a tat frustrating (ToT). But tonight I finally managed to book 3 flights with Emirates Airlines, which also flew me to Japan last year. After being in the air for almost 17 hours (with a short break in Dubai) theyll be arriving in Osaka on August 8th! Unfortunately, they wanted me to boo
Getting a fake ID from that guy who will, once you've drunk yourself stupid in various lenient bars, supply you with a bogus highschool diploma, is a common rite of passage for many young keeners.More often than not these sorts of identification cards could not pass muster anywhere other than the All-blind and Half-smart Society's annual barbecue and booze-up, but the teens, long having exhausted the liquor cabinet of mom's secret stash of Baby Duck (for all our foreign readers, the worst plonk in the Great White North, unfit to scour sink basins in the southwestern part of France), go for it anyhow. In Japan recently, a 16-year-old raised the bar (and nearly bankrupted one) for under-aged drunken antics the world over when he sauntered into a Tokyo hostess club in the guise of a rich young playboy and began whooping it up in grand style. The teen, who the manager later said ordered drinks and spoke with hostesses as a man experienced in such matters would, and was presumably not asked f

By James Grubel CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia will continue to photograph Japan's whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Sunday, despite Japan's warning of a diplomatic protest over Australia's tough anti-whaling stance. Rudd said while Australia had strong economic, diplomatic and security ties with Japan, it was also important for Australia to continue to oppose Japan's annual whale hunt. "Calling commercial whaling scientific whaling is not right, it's not accurate," Rudd told Australian television on Sunday. Japan considers whaling to be a cherished cultural tradition. Despite agreeing to a whaling moratorium in 1986, Japan is allowed to conduct "scientific" whaling, and plans to hunt almost 1,000 minke and fin whales this Antarctic summer. Australia, a strong opponent of whaling, has sent a customs ship to monitor Japan's whale hunt and to collect evidence for a possible international court challenge against the hunt
TOKYO (Reuters) - Finance Ministers from Japan and China did not discuss currencies on Sunday but they did talk about China-made toxic dumplings -- the latest thorn in often-rocky Sino-Japanese relations. Japanese Finance Minister Fukushiro Nukaga did not bring up currency issues in a bilateral meeting with Chinese Finance Minister Xie Xuren, a Japanese Finance Ministry official said. The two finance ministers met a day after the Group of Seven (G7) meeting of rich countries' financial leaders encouraged China to allow its yuan currency to appreciate more quickly in the statement released after their meeting in Tokyo. The two ministers in charge of the health of the economy -- but not food safety -- devoted considerable time to talking about dumplings imported from China and contaminated with pesticide. The incident made 10 Japanese people sick and sparked a food scare in Japan, becoming an emotive issue in sensitive Sino-Japanese relations. "We must cooperate to investigate

Last Monday Yasu and I spent the day in Nagoya. Im pretty familiar with the city by now, but of course there are still many places in that city that I have yet to discover. And as Im moving away from this area in about 3 months, Ive decided to do a fair amount of extra sightseeing. And poor Yasu will continue to get dragged along on my quest to see as many sights of Nagoya as I can.So this time we headed for Osu Kannon temple, which is a huge Buddhist temple located in a busy shopping area in Nagoya. Having just done all the typical temple stuff the day before at Narita-san in Inuyama, this particular temple visit wasnt very stimulating. We looked around a bit, sniffed up some revolting incense smoke, took some pictures and then we felt it was time to move on.On our way to Osu Kannon we went underground, on our way back we decided to go above ground, so we went on a nice walk from Osu to Sakae (downtown Nagoya). Which was very interesting because we saw a lot of streets, bu

Wii Fit #1 seller in Japan for last four weeksFiled under: Nintendo Wii, Business There's just something about a pressure-sensitive balance board that's turning the Japanese on. Nintendo's Wii Fit game exercise device balancercise board has stayed at the top of the Japanese sales chart for the last four weeks and sold 1,283,000 units since Dec. 1. The device that made gameplay out of a scale reached the million mark in the middle of last month and looks to keep stepping its way to the top spot for a bit. With Miyamoto saying Wii Fit isn't just a one trick pony, there'll hopefully be some software announcements following its US premiere. We're sure the mainstream media already has its prerequisite old folks home and "Wii Fit helping obese children" stories all planned out.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Alexander Sliwinski - Fri, 01 Feb 2008 05:00:00 GMT - Feed (12 subs) sales wii-fit wiifit
Rumor: Smash Bros. Brawl sells 500K on first day in JapanFiled under: Retro, Nintendo Wii, Fighting Already this week we've run leaked trailers, information and gameplay videos of Super Smash Bros. Brawl ... so why not add leaked sales numbers to that list? Cubed3 has a translation of a Japanese blog post referencing a purportedly leaked Famitsu sales report that says the highly-anticipated game sold 500,000 copies, or 80 percent of available stock, on its first day of Japanese release. The sourcing is admittedly not very concrete, but the number does seem plausible given reports of retail shortages and the game's strong showing on the Amazon Japan charts. Then again, Super Mario Galaxy only sold 250,00 copies in it's entire first week of release, and that was during the highly-charged holiday season. Has Smash Bros. Brawl shattered Japanese sales expectations, or is something getting lost in translation here? You'll know as soon as we do.Read | Permalink | Ema

Wii serves over 5 million in JapanFiled under: News In little over 60 weeks, the Wii console has managed to sell over 5 million units in its home territory of Japan. As impressive as this is, it falls short of the DS, which achieved sales figures of this nature in 56 weeks. But, the Wii did manage to beat the PS2, which cracked the 5 million mark after 66 weeks on the market.A system is only so good as its games though, right? Well, in Japan the games pushing the Wii are Wii Sports (2.6 million copies sold as of now), Wii Play (2.1 million copies sold as of now), Mario Party 8 ( 1.1 million copies sold as of now) and Wii Fit (1.1 million copies sold as of now). Super Mario Galaxy comes in fifth place in the country, only selling a total of 843,961 copies.Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Ads by Google Link - Comments - David Hinkle - Wed, 23 Jan 2008 17:00:00 GMT - Feed (10 subs) japan marioparty8 mp8

TOKYO (Reuters) - Support for Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's government has risen over the past month, though nearly half of respondents said the passage of a law to restart an Afghan naval mission was inappropriate, a poll showed on Saturday. The approval rating for the cabinet rose 6.1 percentage points from last month to 41.4 percent, according to the telephone opinion poll conducted by Kyodo news agency on Friday and Saturday. It had fallen more than 11 percent the previous month. Still, the poll showed the number of those opposed to the cabinet was more than the supporters, accounting for 42.8 percent. According to the poll, 46.7 percent of the respondents said the passage of a law on Friday to restart the Afghan naval mission was inappropriate. Japan's government forced the law through parliament to resume a controversial naval mission in support of U.S.-led operations in Afghanistan, keeping a promise to security ally Washington. Nikon is expected to be Japan's DSLR market leader for 2007 says a leading Japanese market research company. But Canon's compact sales ensure it retains the top-spot for overall digital camera sales in the country. DSLR sales are expected to continue to grow as more manufacturers join the fray.Nikon and Canon share the spoils of Japanese camera marketTokyo-based BCN said that, having captured 43.3% of Japan's DSLR market between January and November, it expects Nikon to hold on to the top spot once December's sales have been calculated. Despite the successful launch of the 40D, BCN's research suggests that Canon will not be able to overcome its second place, having secured a 39.9% market share up to November. Karous 3-pack official for JapanFiled under: News, ImportsRetailer NCSX started taking preorders for the Japanese Wii release of Karous. TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's prime minister met and apologised on Tuesday to hepatitis patients at the centre of a high-profile scandal over tainted blood products as he tried to quell a row that risks further eroding his support ratings. The meeting came after Yasuo Fukuda's surprise announcement on Sunday that his ruling coalition would draft legislation to compensate all patients who contracted hepatitis C from tainted products, with payments under equal conditions. "I believe you have all suffered, mind and soul, for many years and have had feelings that can't be expressed into words," Fukuda told the group of patients. "I take this opportunity to apologise from my heart," he said, bowing. Fukuda, who already faces voter anger over mishandled pension records and a bribery case involving a former top defence official, was dealt a blow last week when patients who had sued the government and drug makers rejected a government proposal for compensation. The pat
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese stocks closed at their highest in nearly two weeks on Tuesday as investors picked up recently pressured shares such as Sony Corp, encouraged by a softening yen and after news from Merrill Lynch prompted a rally on Wall Street. But trade was thin and gains were limited as many institutional investors were away for Christmas holidays. The benchmark Nikkei average ended the day up 1.9 percent or 295.59 points at 15,552.59, the highest close since Dec. 12. The broader TOPIX index gained 1.8 percent or 26.83 points to 1,496.03, its highest finish since Dec. 14. The Tokyo market had a full-day session on Tuesday, while most Asian markets, including Hong Kong and Singapore, were closed for Christmas.
