Sure there are lots of books to check out and read with your kids, but the library has many more things to do other than reading books. Our library here in Yorba Linda has all sorts of free events for young children. One of activites is called "Laptime." Children ages 0 to 2 and an adult can share stories, rhymes, puppets, fingerplays and music activities. Best of all, this is free. The library requires that you sign up and gives Yorba Linda residents first priority. For children 3 to 5, the library has a similar activity. These last for 30 minutes and are held once a week. Our library even has a family time where the whole family is invited for a 45 minute activity on Saturdays. Check with your library to see what fun they have waiting for you.Yorba Linda Public LibraryOrange County Public LibrariesLos Angeles Public LibrariesSan Diego County Libraries

The Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace will celebrate Presidents' Day by offering free admission. The library will be open on Presidents' Day from 10am to 5pm. There will be live music, free cherry pie to the first 100 guests and much more. It's a perfect place to visit with school age children. I've actually visited the library with my two toddlers and they loved touring the helicopter exhibit and the grounds. It's only one of two Presidential Libraries in the state and I'm very lucky to live in the same city as this gem. This would be a great opportunity if you've yet to visit this Southern California treasure.Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace18001 Yorba Linda BlvdYorba Linda, CA 92886For additional information click here

I'm heading to a court hearing -- left this morning and did a post-placement visit. I had started a long blog entry before leaving the house, but didn't finish it yet.Didn't want you all to think we had died or something. I'm planning to blog more later.
In the latest Thinking Out Loud with George and Joan George Needham revealed a startling finding from the next OCLC report. That library use does not correlate with library support. We can't assume that our members will support us in a bond issue. Nor can we assume those not using the library won't support funding. Rallying our members for a tax increase or bond issue is not the best way to get funding. We have to mobilize our supporters, whether members or not. The full report is due in the first part of 2008.For the use of members instead of patrons, users, etc. listen to the podcast.

I'm signed up for TLA. Did it too late to get a decent rate on a conference hotel so I'll be staying behind the convention center. From the map it looks close, not a bad walk. I'm on the ballot for councilor for the Digital Library group. So, I'll be going there and to the TRGCC events.Last Spring I suggested they have Cali Lewis on the program. She lives in Dallas and has a video podcast, Geekbrief. Her story is great, two years ago she was working at a u-rent-space place and heard about podcasting. Without any experience she and her husband started one . Now, that is their job. She has been on TV and rubs shoulders with Web 2.0 luminaries. Since I was the one to suggest her, I hope she gets a good turnout. I should be there unless it conflicts with the DL or TRGCC events, or its part of a preconference workshop. Hope not.

My friend Kim over at Life in a Shoe is hosting a giveaway of Vision Forum's exciting new adventure series, Ballantyne books.Inside sources say these books are everything you would expect from Vision Forum. They are well written, fast paced, with a rich vocabulary and exciting storylines. The characters are strong, courageous, virtuous, principled - except for the bad guys, of course. :)And the Christian worldview is inextricably woven into the book, from cover to cover. I am a firm believer that one's worldview shines through in all that one does, and Mr. Ballantyne was a Scottish covenanter of the 1800's. You will know that when you read his books.

It is a dream of my husband and myself to one day have a beautiful library. When we have our dream house built, it will have a library with dark wood and floor to ceiling bookshelves. Maybe even a beautiful mural on the ceiling. Until that time, far in the future, comes...we can still dream.I stumbled across this page today with some of the most beautiful libraries!Librophiliac Love Letter: A Compendium of Beautiful Libraries
September is Library Card Sign-up Month. It is also library card renewal month at MPOW, the Lunar and Planetary Institute. In my latest podcast I used the 10 second clip from ALA to reinforce the renewal message. (I felt like a sound engineer getting it the right volume and speed.) They have other lengths that might meet your needs better. Thanks ALA.
The New York Times reported yesterday that Google plans to start charging users for full online access to the digital copies of some books in its database, according to people with knowledge of its plans. Publishers will set the prices for their own books and share the revenue with Google. Up until now, Google has only been able to allow full access to the out-of-copyright books in its digitised collection. There has been an ongoing 'debate' in which publishers disputed Google's right to include their books, seeing it as a breach of copyright despite the fact that search results only showed short extracts surrounding the search terms. This move may well signal a way forward such that - at least for participating publishers - Google can be seen as an e-book library as well as a book-text search engine. The same article also reports on progress on Amazon's entry into the e-book reader market - the Kindle, which is expected to have reference works packaged with it. The Kindle also has its
Savvy to the fact that the Wii is being touted as the non-core gamer's console of choice, Knibble.com has launched a site of Wii-enabled casual games.Wii.Knibble.com offers more than 5,000 casual games like Bejeweled and Solitaire, all tweaked to be Wii-compatible. To get there, just select the Internet Channel on your Wii, then put in the Knibble (I keep wanting to call it Kibble) site and voila: a bevy of casual gaming awaits, without having to download a single thing. Granted, with a library that big, you have to figure that most of the games are going to be pretty lousy, but there's undoubtedly some gems to be had.Source: Game|Life Online Games Wii

I'm using the Spanish/Español Internet Terminal in the Boulder Public Library, and there are no USB ports here. I have pictures, and I am riding the Miracle Wave.
I am CouchSurfing with Todd, at 19th and Walnut, in Jupiter. There are a lot of college kids with laptops there, but they're mostly Dells and other shitty computers, so my flow is always broken when I try to use them. On a Mac, it's so easy for me to make a slideshow, and post pictures, not to mention resize and crop. These tasks are trivial, at least when I'm on a Mac. I am not a noob. ... And so my Windows Adventure began. I remember when Windows 95 came out, and the Start button was all the rage! Start button! “Wow! This computer has a Start button, it must be really new! It must be really fast!” “Wow! Windows 98?! Cool! It supports DVD and USB!” “Windows ME?! Wow, windows for the new millenium!

BSBL - Heard of it?e4libraries?You will!Collection Management is what librarians do. Manage their collections. It's part of what distinguishes us from the shelving: we don't just have books, we develop collections, select titles, even - some would have it - organise knowledge. It is an art and science taught in schools and departments of information/library studies on CILIP-accredited courses (e.g. at UWA). If you want a definition, there are several to choose from, but this one serves well: Collection Management [i]ncludes setting and coordinating selection policies; assessing user needs and studying use; selection, evaluation, and weeding; planning for resource sharing. (School of Information Resources & Library Science, the University of Arizona). Peggy Johnson listed the basic skills as including a "knowledge of the subject, formats and users... a basic understanding of the targeted user community" and (in a later chapter) quoted Dennis Carrigan, "the essence of collec

Getting the word out to other groups about libraries is something I feel strongly about. I've presented at music teacher conferences and the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. Now my suggestion for a story has been picked up by CommandN. It was about LibraryThing and the hook was the $1000.00 worth of books they are offering to referrals for new employees. One small bit of PR but I'm feeling good about it.
I've just returned from a visit at the U.S. Naval Observatory Library. The largest astronomy library in the country, with 80,000 volumes. The main reading room is beautiful.
