• Live Earth too fuzzy
The Telegraph (UK) says Live Earth was underwhelming. Live Aid and Live 8 worked because they were urgent, emotive, single-issue events aimed at achieving immediate, tangible results. They had an uncomplicated spirit of universal charity that coincides with the entire ethos of popular music, and were run with a haphazard, devil-may-care approach that tapped into rock’s favoured anti-establishment pose. There was a sense of manning the barricades, not preaching from a podium. When the ANSWER Coalition organizes a major antiwar protest, the groups involved decide on a few unity points and slogans, and these are displayed prominently  in leaflets, email, and other such organizing materials, plus displayed on the stage banner at the event. Thus, everyone knows what the political message is, and this gives it focus. There was no such focus at Live Earth. The message was diffuse and blurry. “End global warming’? Well sure, but how specifically should this be done was not a

I can't talk, I'm no huge militant enviro-nazi toting non biodegradable green bags (yes, those bags are non biodegradable), but I had to laugh. How could one not laugh. I don't think it's the artist's fault, but the organisers behind this series of concerts are just... (expletive) They've made their money, but it's been a media par-tay here in Australia. The Live Earth concert has been criticised in some quarters. Prize quote comes from the Daily Telegraph, stating what can be best summarised as hypocrisy: "Madonna's Confessions tour produced 440 tonnes of CO2 in four months of last year." Christ, and I was starting to feel guilty about my farts? 440 tonnes is probably what a small African village produces in a decade, maybe? How many carbon emissions across the world throughout the duration of all the concerts? The Boston Globe gripes on about the criticism. Apparently it's 'about the message', which is all fine and well, but mate, if you can't walk t

  • Hot In Here: The papers cover Live Earth
The News of the World doesn't bother itself with getting its Live Earth coverage bogged down in fretting about polar bears drowning or displaced people fighting over the last remaining popsicle. Oh, no, their report is split into two bits: stunning pics for her and for him. The girls get Johnny Borrell; the boys have that really disturbing moment when Madonna was dry-humping the monitor. (What was going through her head at that point? "At least it doesn't keep murmuring 'no, please not'", presumably.)This is how the NOTW describes the opening minutes of the concert:The crowd, which expected to swell to 70,000 by the close, then rose to its feet as the reunited Genesis used their hit Land Of Confusion to send an environmental message.Singer Phil Collins urged the crowd to make the world "a place worth living in".The Wembley show was closed by Madonna, who earlier set the stage alight with a dazzling rehearsal of classic hits La Isla Bonita and Hung Up, as well as new song Hey You pe
  • Live Earth Concerts All Day Today: The Day After
Watching the Live Earth concerts yesterday for something like 8 hours, I got to say, I am absolutely thrilled that so many artists turned out to support such an important cause. Unfortunately the shear scope of these concerts prevented every moment from being shown on regular, but there were tons of great performances from genres from classic to soul to rock to folk shown and you can view all the concert footage online. From all these performances I definitely found some standouts that struck me from a variety of artists both expected and unexpected. Top highlight for me was the Police, who’s set was fiery and electric, exactly as you’d expect the police to be and although I thought the collaboration with Kanye West fell a little short, John Mayer joining them on guitar made up for it. Also, Roger Waters put on a great set, inflatable pig and all, although I really think that any Pink Floyd song isn’t really the same without David Gilmour on guitar. It also was g
  • Nutini defends Live Earth
Before he'd even taken the stage, Paolo Nutini was declaring what a success Live Earth was:"Some people are being cynical for the sake of it," Nutini told the Daily Star. "Of course the carbon emission will be high after the gig but the pay-off is lots of individuals and companies will want to make a change as a result. That's what's important."Well, perhaps there are some people who would react with kneejerk cynicism. On the other hand, is it not valid, if one of the ideas of the Live Earth is to make people aware of our impact on the planet, for people to question the impact of the event? And, more to the point, can Nutini explain clearly for us why some musicians playing songs would make a difference? We really, really don't understand why - when awareness of climate change is already pretty high - people who hitherto haven't seen the need to change their behaviour would do so simply because Paolo Nutini asks them to and sings four songs? Isn't this, in a nutshell, the arrogant

  • Live Earth Concerts All Day Today: Musicians Band Together to Raise Awareness About Climate Change
In the tradition of Live Aid of 1985 and Live 8 of 2005 musicians have once again come together to help raise awareness of a worth cause in todays Live Earth concert series. There will be concerts in 9 different countries with a variety of artists all organized by the Save Our Selves organization hoping to mobilize a global response to climate change and will extend well beyond the concerts themselves. I’m always interested to see any sort of widespread activism taking place for such a good cause and when it involves music, I’m even more excited. The 9 venues for these shows are: New York, London, Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, Rio De Janeiro, Hamburg, China and Tokyo. There looks like a wide range of artists who will be performing including some big names that should make for great highlights. I do find it a little interesting though that there are some big names I would have expected to turn out who are not on the concert list… namely Paul McCartney and U2

  • Live Earth: aquecimento global
As problem

Earlier today, in the comments section, a contributor suggested that complaining about the air travel involved in Live Earth made you a "moron."Interestingly, Live Earth have launched a pledge for all of us to sign which suggests that, at least, they're not "morons" in this sense. Here are two points:2.To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become "carbon neutral;"7.To buy from businesses and support leaders who share my commitment to solving the climate crisis and building a sustainable, just, and prosperous world for the 21st century.Clearly - and coherently - they're calling for people to reduce as much as they can, and offset anything left over. How does that fit with flying Macy Gray to Rio, exactly? And what businesses who will be flying all these stars around - airlines, presumably - who share a commitment to solving the climate crisis? We've yet to hear of any airline pushing for avi
