AMC’s Breaking Bad joins a growing number of cable shows (The Wire, The Sopranos, Rescue Me, The Riches, and Weeds, just to name a few) that seem to challenge the reality of the American dream. Amy Winehouse, as part of her ongoing effort to recover from drug addiction, has moved into Ozzy Osbourne's guest house.Let me repeat that...Amy Winehouse, as part of her ongoing effort to recover from drug addiction, has moved into Ozzy Osbourne's guest house.Ideas that were slightly less stupid than Amy Winehouse moving in with Ozzy Osbourne:Guy who designed the Hindenburg deciding it would be a great idea to paint it with flammable materials. The Japanese thinking it would be a hoot to attack Pearl Harbor.George Bush believing his intelligence people when they said there were WMDs in Iraq.Steve Irwin deciding to fuck with that stingray.Abe Lincoln choosing going to the theater over staying at home and banging the wife.Lizzie Borden's folks leaving the axe lying around.Britney's mom not locking the liquor cabinet.Heath Ledger deciding it would be okay to have that one last sleeping pill.Nah, I kid...I'm sure Amy will be fine in Ozzy's guest house. She and Kelly can stay up all night
It's good news that we are living longer, but bad news that the longer we live, the better our odds of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease.Alzheimer's is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease that causes memory loss, dementia, personality change and ultimately death. The national Alzheimer's Association estimates that 5.1 million Americans are currently afflicted with the disease and predicts that the number may increase to between 11 million and 16 million people by the year 2050.Many Alzheimer's researchers have long touted fish oil, by pill or diet, as an accessible and inexpensive "weapon" that may delay or prevent this debilitating disease. Now, UCLA scientists have confirmed that fish oil is indeed a deterrent against Alzheimer's.Finish report here.

We were watching some eps of the first season of the Wild, Wild West last night. As we watched, I realized I only remembered three things about the series:1. Robert Conrad was SMOKIN' in that sexy short waistcoat he always wore. Not an ounce of fat on that body.2. They had cool gadgets to get out of any situation3. The show had a catchy theme songCourse Will's song was rather cool, too...As was Cartman's....LOL!Speaking of Cartman, this is one of my all time favorite South Park clips, where they go a little crazy on the F word after seeing the Terrance and Phillip movie:
If you are depressed due to the uncertain emergency financial expenses, then you really need to search for a solution that may arrange adequate finance without any trouble. Since there are situations where you feel helpless and lonely, you truly need someone to accompany you in such hard days. In such situation, cash advance loan providers can prove to be your trustworthy companion; in fact, such loan providers can sort out all your financial problems without wasting a single moment. It is quite true that such circumstances take away your peace of mind and force you to arrange money from inappropriate modes. However, with availability of quick cash advance loans, getting an instant loan has become much easier. In the present situation, where no one can survive without proper financial backing, any emergency financial requirement can make you feel embarrassed. More Work Ahead For AIDS Group:
By Rolanda Epstein -
Nassau, Bahamas:
Although Youth Ambassadors for Positive Living [YAPL] are making positive strides in the fight against HIV/AIDS, Chairman and CEO of the non-profit organization Keith Kemp says the group still has a whole more work to do in 2008.
Mr. Kemp said in working closely with young persons in the community he perceives them as being very open and honest about the deadly disease. He said many of the myths young people believe about HIV/AIDS have been cleared up through forums YAPL holds at church meeting, schools and civic meetings.
He also said through a continuation of educational programmes, young people are becoming more receptive and open towards persons who are HIV-positive.
"I think they are now being able to see HIV as an ordinary chronic illness in terms of cancer and diabetes," Mr. Kemp told the Journal.
He said the problem is that young persons are not applying the information they receive about HIV/AIDS in th

Cost of Living Soars
By Candia Dames -
Nassau, Bahamas:
Bahamians are paying more for everyday goods and services as the cost of living continues to climb amid weakening economic growth.
As an example, the Department of Statistics says in its latest consumer price index report that Grand Bahamians paid 21.19 percent more for electricity in the month of November compared to the previous month.
New Providence consumers also saw a continued increase in the Consumer Price Index during that period.
The report says the Consumer Price Index for Grand Bahama showed "a considerable increase" and the CPI for New Providence also "moved forward."
In New Providence, the major groups that helped moved the CPI forward were: clothing and footwear, medical care and health and food and beverages. Increases were also noted for transportation and communications, housing and other expenditures.
In Grand Bahama, the housing index was the leading group with an increase of 4.21 percent. This was follow

Paul Weller popped up on Desert Island Discs this week, choosing The Small Faces above all else, and - unsurprisingly - going with Absolute Beginners as his book. The Daily Mail has jumped on his claim that he enjoyed every minute of his lost drug years, although more notable is their description of his resurrection:The iconic lead singer of The Jam and The Style Council had been dropped by his record label in 1990, but his career revived soon after forging close links with notorious Britpop bands Oasis and Blur."Notorious"? For reasons which we've never had convincingly explained to us, despite the annoying inability of the programme to play any track in full, the show is still not even available on Listen Again, much less a podcast, but you can catch it on Radio 4 next Friday. I have just had a piece of unwelcome news from Germany, regular readers may remember the piece I wrote about the occupation of their factory by the former employees of the Bike Systems company in Nordhausen in the German state of Thuringia, after the company was asset stripped, closed down and declared insolvent. The workers were looking for investors who were willing to put several million euros into the business and if successful in finding this financial support they had hoped to run the business as a co-operative.* Sadly it is not to be as these gallant workers and their supporters were unable to find an investor, despite producing a number of special editions of their excellent product to prove the factory could be viable. The machinery is to be sold off to a company registered in Hungary where Labour cost it seems are far cheaper than in Germany as to are welfare benefits etc. There is a chance that a small number of the workers may set up a small manufacturing bike-production b

Yesterday at work was extremely insane. It just seemed like all the patients had smoked some wacky weed or something before coming into our center. I gave one lady the sign in sheet and asked her to sign in and sit down. She decided to take the sign in sheet to sit down with her. So when the next person went to go sign in, we had to search for the sheet. She said she thought it was papers for her to fill out. She had been sitting there for ten minutes staring at the paper trying to figure out what she needed to do. How hard is it to see what to do on a sign in sheet? Most medical facilities have something like this. Wow!DP had brought a Christmas dog to work. Its this animated dog on a sleigh that when you squeeze its ear, it barks out Christmas carols. It was cute the first few times. However, every time we turned around, DP was squeezing its ear. It really got annoying after awhile.I was working at the front desk yesterday. There are two windows that open up for patients

Last month we began a series of reports on living with a disability in America. We started with education. Today, in Part Two, we look at employment. To go to work, you need a way to get there. Around the nation's capital, many people take subway trains to their jobs.Federal law says public transportation systems in the United States must be accessible. What does that mean? It means that trains, buses and planes must be designed for use by people with physical disabilities. In Washington's Metrorail system, for example, lights go on and off as a signal to those who cannot hear a train arriving. Raised bumps on the ground serve as a warning to those who cannot see they are close to the edge of the platform. And there are elevators in the station, so people in wheelchairs have a way to get from one level to another. But in transit systems, like anyplace else, life is not always easy. Things like broken elevators, or no elevator at all, only create more barriers for the disabled.Accessible pu

With something approaching a poetic mirror-image, John Legend has given a long interview to The Sun. Since nobody here cares much about Legend, the paper has splashed with his opinions on why nobody much cares about Robbue Williams:“I'm stunned as to why Robbie's not that done well in America."He then seems to have an epiphany and works out why:“It's a difficult market to crack. Americans' music taste changes all of the time.“I'm lucky things have worked out for me.“I'm glad I'm known for making good music rather than for partying like some people. I also would hate to have a celebrity girlfriend. I do like to party though – I just do it private!"Hmm... being known for being a vapid partier and unlikely to do the work to crack a big market... who does that sound like?
My wife and her father was recently had visitors from their past. Lazar and Luda were friends with my wife's family for many years, but not too long after the breakup of the Soviet Union and Ukraine independence, they chose to emigrate to the USA. As the Soviet Union disintegrated, so did the economies of many of these soon to be independent nations.Several times during the ensuing years, their USA friends would send "care" packages to friends who remained behind. But something wonderful happened in the ensuing years. As time went by, the economies of many of the newly independent countries, and Russia itself, improved vastly. In wasn't always easy, and it wasn't always smooth, and things were not always trending up, but time went by and things improved. The package was sent via boat shortly before they left the US, and arrived here in Kiev several weeks after our guests had left. While they were here, they seemed a bit awed by the mega-bazaars and the mega-stores that have blosso

I read a joyfully thought-provoking and optimistic essay by Roman Krznaric today on "Time and the Art of Living". I posted my comments about it here on Roman's blog, Outrospection. I hope it will change my attitude and behaviour towards time; I am already thinking differently about it. The essay mentions the Long Now Foundation, which I mentioned in my post on "Event Horizon" by Antony Gormley. It was a privilege to be able to speak to the author shortly after I'd read the essay. I have the urge to recommend it to lots of people, but I know we sometimes resent when other people tell us what we should be doing with our time and what we could be reading. So I'll just leave it here, slid slightly towards you, on a table in the middle of the Information Superhighway.

Often described as a ghost town, it doesn’t quite fit the category, but close enough, considering that it once boasted almost 4,000 people and now supports just a little over 100 people year-round.Though Oatman is only a shadow of it’s former self, it is well worth a visit to this lively “ghost town” that provides, not only a number of historic buildings and photograph opportunities, but the sights of burros walking the streets, as well as costumed gunfighters and 1890s style ladies strolling. In its heyday, from the early 1900s to the 1940s, Oatman and the nearby town of Gold Road were the largest producers of gold in Arizona.Gold was first discovered in Oatman in 1902 by a man named Ben Taddock who, while riding
