  • Malaysia unveils Borneo growth plan as polls loom
By Jalil Hamid and Niki Koswanage KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia unveiled a $32.4 billion development plan on Tuesday for its eastern state of Sabah, on Borneo island, as the nation geared up for general elections widely expected by end-March. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi gave no spending details in unveiling the 18-year plan in Sabah, but he is putting economic development on top of his agenda as he tries to counter his waning popularity and secure another five-year mandate. "It is not the intention of God that you should live in poverty and become backward," Abdullah said in launching the Sabah Development Corridor, the latest in a series of growth corridors that are becoming the trademark of his economic model. "Sabah is endowed by God... We shall not leave it untouched," he said in a ceremony opened by traditional Borneo dancers wearing feathered headdresses and wielding blow-pipes. He stressed that development should be sustainable. Saba
  • Malaysia's Mahathir sees no easing of rift with PM
By Jalil Hamid KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad said on Tuesday he would remain a thorn in the side of his successor in the run-up to elections, and would continue to speak his mind. Until subdued by heart problems last year, the outspoken Mahathir was the most vocal critic of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, accusing his government of lacking "guts" and selling out Malaysian sovereignty. "I still disagree on several of his policies, mainly allowing Malaysians to be subject to Singapore's wishes," the 82-year-old told select foreign media in an interview ahead of Wednesday's launch of his new book. The book published for the first time his personal correspondence with world leaders including U.S. President George W. Bush, on issues ranging from terrorism to Islam and Myanmar. "We are not as independent as before in terms of our attitude towards international affairs," said Mahathir, who ruled the nation for 2
  • Malaysia to stockpile food, possibly fuel - papers
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia plans to set up a national food stockpile to safeguard the country against rising prices and possible shortages, local newspapers said on Thursday. The plan, outlined to local media on Wednesday, could also see the establishment of a petroleum reserve, even though Malaysia was a net energy exporter, the newspapers added. "It is possible," economist Kamal Salih, who is advising the government on the new measures, was quoted as saying in the New Straits Times. "Advanced countries are already stockpiling petrol, but not us as we are currently a net exporter of oil. However, we will discuss this." On food, Malaysia is looking to stockpile essentials such as rice and cooking oil, the dailies said. "The main focus is to ensure the supply and prices of essential items are stable," Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying. "We can't promise to reduce prices, but what's important is to keep them stable.&
  • Why we need to be rich in Malaysia (Chapter two)
Transportation in this lovely country has been the greatest headache for me. It’ll be easier for you to see in figure:1. Every day I travel 30KM to office which is located at USJ, - RM5.002. I’ll pass through 1 plaza toll, - RM1.603. At the end of the day, I travel 50KM to KL to fetch my gf and back to home, - RM8.504. Along the way, I’ll pass through 6 tolls, - RM9.30Let’s assume there are 22 working days within a month; from the above, I need to spend RM24.40 X 22 = RM536.80.5. Monthly maintenance of the car, - RM70.006. Monthly car loan payment, - RM400.00Exclude all my weekend activities (drive to Setapak to play basketball, drive around Klang Valley searching for house, drive to shopping mall, and etc), I need to spend RM1,006.80 in transportation. It has already occupied 50% of my monthly income. How many of you spend more than me in transportation? There should be some, at least. Some foreign readers might be amazed by so many plaza tolls. Well, what can I say? Isn’t th
  • Why we need to be rich in Malaysia? (Chapter One)
So, my first post about this series is here. First of all, I would like to announce some bad news. US stocks fell this morning (17 January 2008), after Intel Corp posted both a disappointing profit and outlook, driving the S&P 500 to its lowest closing level in 14 months. As a tiny blogger, I can only pray that the world’s largest chip maker will pass through this hard time smoothly. Besides, investors also unloaded Apple Inc’s shares for a second day, after the maker of the iPod failed to inspire with new products at its Macworld convention.Next, Nokia’s factory in German town, Bochum, will be closing down. This move will cause 3,500 workers in loosing their jobs. Moreover, Bochum is now in danger of becoming economically depressed after the announcement of Nokia closedown. Nokia is expecting to transfer their factories to more competitive areas in Europe. What do you see from this news? Think deeper. China and India are attracting investors nowadays. Even Vietnam is having a
  • Malaysia's ethnic Indian lawmakers warned over safety
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - The leader of Malaysia's main ethnic Indian party on Saturday urged deputies to be vigilant after one of the members was shot dead, state media said, amid a row in the community over racial discrimination. S. Krishnasamy, 61, was shot dead on Friday in the office of his party, the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), in the southern city of Johor Baru. Police and the party said the motive behind the attack was not clear. "I cannot say whether it has something to do with politics, a private matter or in connection with the constituency. An elected representative has many connections," MIC president S. Samy Vellu was quoted by state news agency Bernama as saying. Politics is in turmoil among the minority ethnic Indian population after more than 10,000 Indians staged an anti-government protest in November to complain of racial discrimination. The activists accused the MIC of selling out their interests. Vellu said some ethnic Indians were trying

  • Malaysia says Herald not allowed to use 'Allah' in its publications
Malaysia’s Cabinet has decided that weekly publication, The Herald, is not allowed to use the word "Allah" in its publications. The restrictions on the use of the word "Allah" was still enforceable and shall be upheld as decided by the Cabinet in two of its meetings - on October 18 and November 1, 2006, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdullah Mohd Zin said. Abdullah said that the Prime Minister had instructed him to clarify the matter so that the public would not be confused. "One of the reasons given to uphold the restriction is because that it has long been the practice of this country that the world Allah refers to God according to the Muslim faith," he said. It was only proper for other religions to use the word "God" and not "Allah" when referring to their God in respective beliefs, Abdullah said. The use of the word "Allah" shall not be made a public debate that may give the impression as if there
  • New coalition seeks reforms for Indian community in Malaysia
A new coalition of 121 Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has called for a "policy of inclusion" to ensure the community's participation in all levels of the decision-making process. • US should not meddle in Malaysia’s affairs, says Deputy PM
Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has said that the United States must mind its own business in regard to Malaysia's application of the Internal Security Act. Responding to a statement by the US State Department on Thursday on the arrests under the ISA of the five HINDRAF leaders that said that Washington expected Kuala Lumpur to provide full protection to them under Malaysian law, Razak said: "Can they first of all give a fair trial to the detainees in Guantanamo Bay? We'll only respond if they do so." He was speaking after the 36th annual Malaysia-Indonesia General Border Committee meeting at Nikko Hotel here on Friday. His reference was to the terrorist suspects held without trial at a facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Razak claimed that the HINDRAF had been given ample advice and warnings since it staged an illegal demonstration on November 25 before the ISA was brought into play. (ANI)
  • Rich Indian tourists making a beeline for Malaysia
Tourist traffic from India to Malaysia continues to grow. It touched 315,000 visitors this year until September, compared to 270,000 for the whole of last year. Indian travellers here have spent about RM724.7million so far this year, and according to Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board director for India P. Manoharan, most of the Indian visitors belonged to well-off or richer class. The Star quoted Manoharan as also claiming that his agency was successfully marketing Malaysia as an exciting and affordable tourist destination. He said the uncompromising hospitality industry and affordable hotel rates, scenic vistas and a friendly cosmopolitan population, were the major draws.   He claimed Indian destinations become expensive at the year-end, due to visiting international tourists and non-resident Indians returning home for festivals and marriages during the auspicious period.  He added that it was far more expensive for Indians to go on local holidays at this time because

  • Project Runway Malaysia Episode 3
I must say some of the contestants are really talented. I can't really compare them to the original Project Runway contestants. They have their distinctive styles of designing. It must be influenced by different perspectives of life and cultures. In their task on episode 3, they were asked to design a red carpet dress for singer "Nurul". Jenny, the one who got eliminated got quite a harsh comment from Bernard Chandran. Ouch! But I still love you Bernard. Hehe. In the end, Alex who came up with a short, white dress (with a sexy bare back) won the challenge. Oh yeah, I guess I'm a late bloomer for this whole Project Runway Malaysia thing, I just found out a blog writtten by the contestants. Here it is http://projectrunwaymalaysia.blogspot.com/.
