Eating smart at home? It’s a challenge, but you can do it once you’ve stocked your kitchen with heart-smart foods. Going out to eat? That’s a whole different story. Suddenly, you’re tempted by Alfredo and au gratin. You rationalize deep-fried broccoli as a nutritious appetizer. And that dessert tray calls each time it passes your table. But you can navigate these nutritional minefields and enjoy a meal that you don’t have to cook or clean up. Here are a few tips to keep you on the right path for heart health:Before You Even Leave the House…Preview the menu. Stop by your favorite restaurants as well as others you’d like to try and request copies of their menus. Or check the Internet—many restaurants post menus on their Web sites and also list the nutrition facts. Choosing your meal ahead of time may reduce the chances that you’ll succumb to the sight and scent of less-optimal choices. Save room in your budget. Make wise food choices for the rest of the day and you may

Here is a shortcut I use to keep all of my favorites accessible from my Start menu. I recommend you take advantage of adding new toolbars to your start menu in window xp. It is very simple and easy to do. Let’s begin. Right-click on your desktop and choose Toolbars | New Toolbar . . . (Figure A). Figure A. Next, choose the folder that you want to appear in your Start menu (Figure B.) Figure B.
Follow these steps to create a Safe Mode option to the Boot menu.
When you're experiencing a problem with Windows XP, you may need to boot the system into Safe Mode more than once. However, doing so can be a tiresome process. When the Boot menu appears, you must press [F8], and then you must select Safe Mode from yet another menu. Wouldn't it be nice if Safe Mode were available from the Boot

Wii Warm Up: Wii menu musicFiled under: Wii Warm UpWe were tooling around on the Virtual Console this evening while not really paying attention, and in the midst of the multitasking, the realization hit that everyone in the room was really into the Wii Shop channel music. We're talking bobbing heads, humming softly, the works. It's really catchy for something so unendingly cheerful, but maybe we just hear it a lot around here. It's grown on us. But it inspired us to ask how you felt about the various random tunes that pour out of your Wii. I had my family over for T-bone Steaks and sides and a Crustless Cranberry Pie for dessert. The recipe called it a pie but it's not really a pie since the definition of pie includes a crust or shell. It's one of my little peeves when foods are named incorrectly because the name sets expectations and part of the enjoyment of food comes from the meeting or exceeding of expectations. It's baked in a pie dish but the texture is more brownie-like. To be fare, this one is a little harder but I think something like, Cranberry Blondie would be more accurate. As for ratings, it was a hit with my brother and my dad but bombed with my mom and Lon. I was in the middle. It's definitely for someone who likes very tart flavors.
Well, another Christmas comes and goes. I seem to have spent a lot of time in the kitchen - this is fine by me... We had about 25 for drinks and nibbles on the Sunday, five for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and seven for boxing day.
Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and are looking forward to 2008. It's been a crazy past 2 weeks and in my absence it's been pretty quiet around here at Milk and Cookies, I'm sure you have noticed. I had planned on a really thoughtful Christmas post just before the Yule to wish everyone a nice Christmas, but I guess that thought just never came to fruition. I had panned on baking a really nice fruitcake or perhaps posting about a chocolate panettone recipe, however that I never got around to either. So I'm sorry I haven't been more attentive to the blog of late, although there hasn't been a lack of food and eating, I can assure you of that. And although this may sound a little trite and overdone but I really do count it a privilege to be able to blog, and of all things, blog about food. I know that most of the world's population do not have such frivolity to indulge themselves in and know that this food blogging thing is a concession I don't want to take for granted especially wh

This easy tossed green salad recipe can be put together in a matter of minutes. Thai green salad makes a wonderfully cooling side dish to spicy Thai curries and other Thai recipes, but is equally excellent for everyday meals. This tossed salad includes a very simple salad dressing recipe that's delicious, fresh, and slightly creamy but also low in fat and calories. And it can be made as mild or as spicy as you like.
Tip: double the salad dressing recipe and keep any extra in the refrigerator for a quick & scrumptious tossed salad anytime!

Today we begin our baking for Thanksgiving. We will be cooking tomorrow too. I am starting to feel a little anxious about having such a large gathering at my home for the holiday. This Thanksgiving is turning into a family reunion. There will most likely be families from four states here. If everyone shows up we will have close to 40 people for our gathering. My first party for November was on 11/6, and since it was on a Tuesday evening, I was literally running down to the minute, and had no time for photographs. This Saturday is my second for November, and should afford me plenty of time to photograph and detail out what I put in items and how to prepare it.If you've read the blog description, the dump cook is quite literal. Most of these things I've made a hundred times or more, but I don't have a list of what I put in. So as I'm making these favorites, I have to take some time to make notes about quantity. Where in the past I would quite literally just squeeze, pour, scoop etc, directly into the bowl, I am actually taking time to use measuring utensils so I can give you an idea of what really goes into these recipes. My hubby asked what I'll do if I try something and it doesn't turn out, it's simple, I won't post it. Maybe I should and tell you not to try it that it's terrible or blah. I guess I intend this to be a repository for al

Choose a menu (we have four great ones to suggest).
If you're ordering a fresh turkey, do it now; if you're buying a frozen turkey, you still have time, but don't wait until the last minute. Remember: It's best to allow four to five days for it to thaw. (For advice on buying, defrosting, and cooking your turkey, see How Big a Bird, and Other Turkey Tips.)
Floral centerpieces finish off a well-set table. Florists are busy this time of year, so order flowers now. Four Days Before Thanksgiving
Start defrosting the frozen turkey in the back of the refrigerator, where it is coldest.
Compose a shopping list, and purchase all non-perishables. Wait until the day before Thanksgiving to buy salad greens, fresh bread, or seafood.
If you're baking pies for dessert, make the dough for the crust, roll it out, lay it into pie plates, and freeze.
Two Days Before Thanksgiving
Prepare the serving pieces, plates, flatware, glasses, etc.
If you're using cloth napkins or tablecloths, iro

I probably should have reversed the order of the first two items, because you can't really think about your menu until you've determined who you will be inviting and how many people you will have to serve. Decide whether you will send formal invitations or just call everyone. I host Thanksgiving every year and don't send invitations out, I just call people to let them know "Yes, I am hosting Thanksgiving again this year"In my case, I'm going to need to make sure I have enough food for 28 people. I'm assuming my husband's grandmother, parents, siblings and their families, and niece and her family will be joining us, plus 4 possible unknown others. My father-in-law doesn't eat Turkey, so I make ham and turkey every year. My favorite dish is the Brandied Candied Sweet Potatoes, so while I could probably do with just the mashed potatoes each year, I make both. I do divide the mashed potatoes in half though, and leave half plain and use the other half to make Creamy Garlic Mashed Potatoes.
