  • Mexico Travel Advisory: DON’T GO!
Cross posted from Islamanazi.comVacationers from Canada to San Diego are suffering increasing dangers in Mexico. The Canadian ‘Sudbury Star’reports that a couple, Jules and Jo-Anne Lapalme, and another couplewere vacationing in Cancun and the men were accused of committing anunstated sex offense against a female hotel employee and threatenedwith arrest by the hotel manager and 4 aggressive employees. They weretold to sign a confession to “make it go away” and after refusing, thepolice, who were waiting outside, came and arrested them. These tourists were sporting expensive jewelry and the whole affairwas an obvious set-up. At the station, they were told to pay $160 tohave the charges dropped. Sound like a fun vacation? Would you pay $8000 for that experience? They did.Federal agents said kidnappings of U.S. citizens by Mexican gangs in Tijuana, Rosarito Beach and Ensenada are becoming more common.Local FBI agents told the San Diego Union-Tribune that at least 26San Diego County

  • Sorry, But I Don't Care About USA-Mexico...
...or any other international friendlies. And neither should you. They're boring. We're talking about exhibition games here, okay folks? Nothing's at stake other than "bragging rights," which in this case comes down to nationalism. I don't like nationalism. It's caused too much trouble, including all of last century's most bloody conflicts. And to what end? At least religion inspired people to paint the ceilings of churches and what-have-you. Nationalism just inspires people to kill each other. This doesn't mean I eschew international competitions wholesale. The world cup is good fun--great fun, even--and I will also watch the Euro championship, Copa America, Gold Cup, etc. Those tournaments at least represent a means to an end, with a number of national teams competing against each other for an ultimate prize. Okay, that's still vaguely fascist, but then so too is GDP. But we need a way to measure a country's economic output just like we need a way to gauge its soccer output. The inter

  • Oh the Irony--Mexico is Having Problems Re-Absorbing It's Citizens
Cross posted from Miss Beth's Victory DanceArizona had an interesting law go into effect January 1, 2008. It's called the Employer Sanctions Law and requires ALL employers to verify ALL employees are United States citizens. In anticipation of this law going into effect, many illegals from the Tucson and Phoenix areas "self-deported" with their families right around Christmas (normally, the illegals would pack up the family and cross back "home" to visit with the family and then come back here). In anticipation of the new law, the border was full with the illegals moving home.Well. That's a good thing. Then, we have several businesses in Phoenix going belly up and declaring bankruptcy. Three reasons--1) the Employer Sanctions Law; 2) the businesses catered to illegals (who are self-deporting) and 3) if the businesses didn't specifically cater to illegals, they hired illegals. This is also a good thing. Here's the ironic part...Mexico has issues with the Employer Sanction Law. Mexico is co

  • Mexico Does Not End at its Border
Cross posted from The Virtuous RepublicPresident Felipe Calderon, president of a corrupt, third world, poverty ridden Mexico (and yes, I meant to say corrupt, third world, poverty ridden) gave a speech on Sunday that should be reprinted in every paper across the United States. America has more than a problem of illegal immigration on its hands, it has an invasion to deal with that is supported by Mexico City.If this doesn't make your red American blood boil, then you are truly a liberal, uncaring about the future of our republic. Calderon had this to say:• "Mexico does not end at its border."Yes it does, that is why we are building a fence. Or does Mexico have territorial ambitions in the southwest?• "We strongly protest the unilateral measures taken by the U.S. Congress and government that have only persecuted and exacerbated the mistreatment of Mexican undocumented workers."Last time I checked, the U.S. was a sovereign nation. Unlike your third world nation, whose l

  • Buying in Mexico
Buying Mexico real estate might not have been something you’ve thought much about, but why not? After all Baja real estate starts right beside San Diego so you can easily pop over the border if there’s something that you can’t find locally although there’s a considerable support network for expats already in place so it’ll only be the more obscure things that you might find you have to take a trip to San Diego to pick up. The retirement community is growing fast and you’ll find all kinds of things from golf courses to modern medical facilities already in place. What you’ll not find is excessive prices. Skim through Baja real estate listings and you’ll find that prices for good quality housing start from well under $200k, though the market runs right up to luxury estates costing into the millions of dollars.
  • PEMEX says Mexico oil reserves may be gone in 7 years
The state-owned nationalized oil company of Mexico, PEMEX, “announced that oil reserves may run out in seven years.” “Supplies of this economically exploitable resource are running out,” informed a report sent by the state owned company to the United States stock market. Jeff Vail notes They will probably be out of oil in seven years–out of oil, not just beginning to decline. Notice how this came out on Friday afternoon. This is when you issue a press release when you want to bury a story. Sounds like the Peak Oil theory is proving itself to be true. BTW, Mexico ranks third in amount of oil imported to the US.

Then there’s the increasing power of the drug cartels, who often are better-armed and equipped than police, as well as controlling some areas (and police as well.) What happens if Mexico starts to wobble? We may find out.
