  • Mathematicians develop model to solve traffic-jam mystery
Mathematicians have solved the mystery behind traffic jams and have developed a model to show how major delays occur on our roads, with no apparent cause.   A number of traffic jams leave drivers puzzled as they finally reach the end of a tail-back and realize there was no evident cause for their delay.   This research was carried out by a team of mathematicians from the Universities of Exeter, Bristol and Budapest.   This team developed a mathematical model to demonstrate the impact of unexpected events such as a lorry pulling out of its lane on a dual carriageway.   The model disclosed that if a driver slows down below a critical speed while reacting to such an event, he would force the car behind in order to slow down further and the next car back to reduce its speed further still.   As a result, several miles back, cars would finally come to a halt, with drivers ignorant of the reason for their delay.   The model also predicted this to be a very typ

  • Continuing mystery and controversy
There is something of potential importance within the UFO mystery, and it is two-fold, according to Don Berliner, a longtime UFO investigator and an independent aviation/science writer. He also is Chairman of the Fund for UFO Research, located in Alexandria, Virginia.First of all, there are the detailed descriptions from veteran airline and military pilots of objects seen at close range in broad daylight."These were said to have been solid, metallic-looking objects with sharp edges and simple geometric shapes that were completely unlike any known aero-spacecraft, and displayed performance--extreme speed within the atmosphere, violent maneuvers and spectacular acceleration--that was even farther from the norm," Berliner told SPACE.com.Secondly, there is the "excessive zeal" shown by the U.S. Air Force when claiming to have solved the UFO mystery, Berliner suggested. "Statistics were manipulated, intelligent adult witnesses were treated like naive children, explanations were fabricated,
  • Mystery objects redux
A flight controller at NASA's shuttle Mission Control room spotted the debris at about 2:45 a.m. EDT (0645 GMT) Tuesday while using one of the orbiter's payload bay cameras during routine Earth observations, shuttle officials said.Image analysts were unable to identify what the mystery object was, and likely will not be able to, shuttle officials said, though some engineers think it could still be a small piece of plastic inadvertently left between tiles along Atlantis' underbelly."We don't know that for sure, but it is a likely candidate," Hale said, referring to the bit of orange plastic--known as shim stock--seen dangling from a gap between the protective heat tiles along Atlantis' belly. But a second object photographed by Atlantis' crew is thought to be a simple plastic bag that drifted away from the orbiter."We do see things come off space vehicles from time to time that are really of no consequence other than we really would not like to leave litter lying around," Hale said.Data
  • Mystery Objects Prompts Third Heat Shield Inspection for Atlantis Crew
CAPE CANAVERAL, - The six astronauts aboard the space shuttle Atlantis will conduct an unprecedented third inspection of their orbiter's heat shield before landing this week to ensure its integrity after an unidentified object appeared to shake free of the spacecraft this morning, NASA's shuttle chief said late Tuesday.NASA space shuttle program manager Wayne Hale said Atlantis' STS-115 astronaut crew will use their orbiter's 50-foot robotic arm to scan sensitive heat shield areas Wednesday and remains on track for a planned landing at the Kennedy Space Center here Thursday at 6:21 a.m. EDT (1021 GMT)."We still aiming for Thursday," Hale said. "We have no reason, we think, not to go take a look."Commanded by veteran NASA spaceflyer Brent Jett, Atlantis' STS-115 crew was slated to land at the Shuttle Landing Facility here at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) at 5:58 a.m. EDT (0958 GMT) Wednesday after an 11-day mission to resume construction of the International Space Station (ISS).But NAS
  • The Gift Giving Mystery
Every year the stress happens: what to give others for Christmas? This is no easy task for many, and certainly not for me! I deliberate long and hard on what gifts to buy for others in my life, and even after the package is wrapped and the bow is placed on top, I'm still wondering if I made the right decision! Will they like the gift? Do they need it? Is it the right size, style or color? Is it too boring? Too outrageous? And so the doubts rattle around in my head during the Season of Joy, and no doubt for many others as well!Worse still is when others ask me what I would like for Christmas, and all I can think of is very expensive items or charitable donations to charities I favor--something obviously not in the budget for most I know! And then I ponder again...what can I suggest as a gift idea that is affordable for them? More stress! If you've read this blog for very long, you know how I feel about STUFF! As I've matured, I've realized how much happier I am with a more minimal decorat

I got so tired of the phone ringing after I went to bed, that I have started to unplug the phone in our bedroom. However, in checking the caller ID, it's been ringing at night. My first guess is Salinda sneaking phone calls. I will solve that tonight by locking up the other phones. We haven't heard anything and I'm starting to wonder. So already this morning, only minutes after being out of bed, my mind is churning... how am I going to build character in a daughter who really doesn't care about anything but how she looks and what her friends think, disregarding our rules every chance she can in order to get what she wants? And where is MIke? • Jen's new Mystery Man Revealed!
So who was that handsome mystery man Jennifer Aniston was spotted holding hands with during a romantic dinner over Memorial Day weekend? The case is solved: It's 36-year-old British model Paul Sculfor, and the pair already have been dating for several weeks, PEOPLE reveals in its latest cover story, on newsstands Friday. "He's a lovely guy," says his friend and former flame, London socialite Lady Victoria Hervey. "A gentleman. Simple things, like opening doors, he does all that. He'll think of the woman before himself." The 6-foot-tall former boxer and construction worker has shown up in ads for Christian Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier, but he may be best known for a British commercial he starred in for Levi's, in which he plays a drowned fisherman with three mermaids desperately after him and his jeans. Sculfor and Aniston were first spotted out together over Memorial Day weekend, when they had an intimate dinner at Santa Monica's One Pico restaurant in the Shutters Hotel. The pai
  • Cats On Tuesday--Mystery Cat
The cat in the photo above is NOT my cat Anela! And yet, I found this cat's photo on my computer this morning when I was searching for a photo of Anela to post for today. This 'mystery cat' became a big deal in our home as my partner and I examined this photo and three others in my photo file. The reason is we can't remember where we took the photo of this cat, and we can't place the background details in the other three photos even after zooming them up all the way. The photos were taken by my camera, and the photos on the day before and the day after, we can clearly recognize. What's weirder yet is this cat has a strong similarity to Anela! The markings are similar, but there is more brown and black. Here's a photo of Anela to examine:Either we are early candidates for Alzheimers or we had some missing time where we visited some other home and took a photo of another cat. Needless to say, this is very disturbing to us that we can't recall where we photographed the mystery cat!
  • Google mystery #562!
Whilst attending "Google university" at the internet world expo in London the other day, I put a question to the two Google representatives who had just given a lecture on the quality scoring of Adwords. My question was "does the conversion rate or length of time spent on a site affect the quality score of an ad?" i.e. If everything else is equal then will an ad that people convert more off or stay on the site for a greater length of time eventually get a better quality score and appear further up the rankings for less money?I have always suspected that these two things must count for something when Google asseses the quality score of ads yet, after a bit of flustering, they both insisted that actually the only thing that affected an ads quality score is the click through rate. If this is the case then I could have great, compelling ad copy but a really irrelevant sie and yet Google would still show me higher than other Ads as according to them my ad is more relevant. Here is the probl
