  • Happy Lunar New Year 2008
T?T is celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year. It is celebrated from the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. T?t shares many of the same customs of its Chinese counterpart. Many Vietnamese prepare for T?t by cooking special holiday foods and cleaning the house. On T?t, Vietnamese visit their families and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. T?t traditionally marks the coming of Spring, so Spring (Xuân) is sometimes used interchangeably with T?t in Vietnamese.Vietnamese people usually return to their families during T?t. Some return to worship at the family altar or visit the graves of their ancestors. Others return to where they grew up. Although T?t is a universal holiday among all Vietnamese, each region and religion has its own customs.T?t can be divided into three periods, known as T?t Nięn, Giao Th?a, and T
  • The Chinese New Year Celebration in Kihei
Yesterday at the Safeway Shopping Center in Kihei (South Maui), two giant dragons danced made their way from store to store amid the rhythmic pounding of drums, clanging gongs, and throngs of people feeding them money in little red envelopes. The dragons are considered auspicious and when you you give a dragon a donation, you're ensuring your good luck for the coming year.Every year we make this our custom. Enjoy the images below!

  • WITNESS - Reporting in the dark in icy New Year China
By John Ruwitch CHENZHOU, China (Reuters) - I stepped nervously from the over-crowded sleeper onto the frigid platform with no hotel, no contacts and no plan other than to find out what it was like to be in a city of 4 million in the midst of a 12-day blackout. The ride aboard the L44 train should have taken 4-1/2 hours. Across the snowbound country it had taken four times as long by the time we pulled into Chenzhou, only the second stop on a northbound slog to Beijing from the southern city of Guangzhou. Freezing rain and snow in late January coated much of south-central China with a thick layer of ice, contorting tree branches and crumpling some 1,000 high-tension power pylons. Chenzhou was at the heart of the freak winter disaster that halted transport and stranded millions in the days before the biggest holiday on the Chinese calendar, the Lunar Yew Year. The slush-lined streets were alive with activity, and I learned over the next few days that stoic resignation bolstered

  • Happy Lunar New Year!
Today is the first day of the Year of mouse, and the weather is so cold in Hong Kong that has only 8°C. Maybe the readers of this blog are always facing such weather from time to time, or even colder, but to me, it's already freezing cold. If you have a good memory, you should remember that I was not in Hong Kong last Lunar New Year. Yes, I used the earning from Adsense and other monetization programs to subsidize my trip to Eastern Europe. I have been to Dresden and Berlin of Germany, Prague of Czech Republic and Vienna of Austria. You can refer to my post “Trip to Eastern Europe”.But this year, I need to stay in Hong Kong, not because I am not able to earn that much from Adsense, but due to the fact I need to work and only have four holidays. How poor I am. For the bright side, I can save up money for the Valentine's Day which is a day to burn my cash. I think it may be a good idea to write more about the plan to the coming Valentine's day.Anyway, unlike other holidays, my earni

  • Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner at Mom's
Everything my mom makes is always amazing. So many people have begged my mom to open a restaurant but she never will. It remains a special treat for loved ones only. This year, she decided on some non-traditional dishes since we'll be having a big banquet style meal tonight as well.First, Fried Butterfish with Pickled RadishesThis cold dish of Surf Clam and Celery is light and refreshing. The hint of sesame oil is a nice accent. We saw this innovative dish last time we went to New Yeah Shanghai and my mom has a knack for taking restaurant creations and improving them. These Pork and Sticky Rice Wrapped in Bamboo Leaves looked better and tasted better.Yum, ox tail stewed in a rich tomato sauce. The picture is a bit smoky since I took the picture right as my mom plated it.These Fried Shrimp Balls were a hit. The coating is clever little cubes of bread making a light and crunchy outside. My mom makes an awesome Fish Head Soup. She uses a type of tofu, translated as frozen tofu. The process

  • Celebrate Chinese New Year!
Chinese New Year celebrations start tomorrow night and lasts for days. Even if you're not Chinese, you can celebrate as well. Here's a brief outline. Pick and choose the things you'd like to do and modify as you wish. Hey, I celebrate Break Fast but I don't fast.1. New Year's Eve dinner is Wed night this year, on February 6th. Everyone scrambles home to be with their family, usually going to wherever their elders are. So, if you can, go have dinner with your parents and/or grandparents.2. The New Year's Eve meal is supposed to include a wide variety of dishes: a chicken, a duck, a fish, a meat (beef, lamb, or pork), and as many of each as possible. You can order in or make reservations at a restaurant to make things easy.3. Right before midnight on Wed night, eat dumplings. Dumplings are similar in shape to an old form of Chinese money or gold ingots called Yuan Bao and so dumplings are symbolic. You can also fold Yuan Bao shapes with paper.4. Make sure you have plenty of left-over fis

  • Setting The Best Goals For The New Year
We all have goals in life. We have the wildest dreams in life that we wish would come true. But can all these be attained with only a snap of your finger? Of course not! We are not born magicians or fairies. We need to walk a certain pathway to reach that goal, and most importantly, the path we are taking should be right. This is where goal setting comes into the picture. Systematic goal setting is essential so that the risk of going the wrong directions would be lesser, and that your chances of attaining that goal are high. Here are the key essentials of setting your goal, regardless of what your goal in life is:v Create a positive avowal of your goal. You should tell yourself, ‘Make it happen and do it well’ rather than ‘Do not make any silly mistake’. This is something you should remind yourself every single time.v Be specific. Set the year, date and time that you want to attain the goal. In this way, you can keep track of whether you have achieved the goal earlier, on time,

  • New year rings in fare war in the skies
NEW DELHI: The new year is seeing its first fare war in the skies. Following GoAir’s flat fare of Rs 1,075 (including taxes and surcharge) on the Delhi-Jaipur route, another budget carrier SpiceJet is planning to slash fares to match the competition. IndiGo has already launched a promotional airfare of Rs 500 plus taxes across all sectors, albeit for a limited period. “We are already offering Rs 500 basic fare on various sectors. Keeping in mind the ongoing lean season, we may further slash it but no decision has so far been taken on this,” SpiceJet chairman Siddhanta Sharma said. “January-March is usually a not-very-exciting period as compared to the previous quarter,” he added. The airlines’ move is largely being attributed to overcapacity built up by them and people avoiding air travel due to fog-related delays. “In the first 11 days of this year, the growth in the aviation sector is in single digits. During this period, airlines have added 8% capacity to their fleet si

  • New Year?s Again?
Yes it's true. In Russia, the New Year comes once again. On Monday January 14, 2008 the Old New Year will be upon us. What is the old New Year? Back before Soviet times, Russia used the old Julian calendar and it was off by a couple weeks. So, January 7th is Christmas and January 14th is New Years Day. In my opinion, this is just another excuse to have a party. So, no complaining here. We will head out to a friend's house for New Year's eve on Sunday evening. Speaking of parties, seems most Russians are up for any excuse to celebrate. Not that they are all drunks or anything even close, but celebrations seem to be more often than I grew up ever attending. For instance, we are invited to 3 different parties this weekend ? a birthday party, a dinner party and the New Year's party. Pretty soon Maslenitsa (pancake week) will be here. In Russia, it is a seven day long party. It is also a very longstanding tradition. Here in the USA, we will probably get together with some friends and ce

  • How Did You Spend your New Year's Eve?
I spent my New Year's Eve exactly the way I wanted to - just with my family. My husband, my kids and my mother in law were all here and we counted down the seconds till the start of 2008. I was busy cooking, my mother in law was busy with the kids, and Henry was busy with something I just cannot recall at the moment. We had a delicious meal, and I pray that 2008 be a blessed year for my family. I hope my mother-in-law's petition to go abroad finally pushes through this year, I also hope that my eldest daughter Keisha's schooling all goes well, and I also hope that Henry's job will bring him more success. As for me, for as long I see that my kids and my family are happy and healthy, then that's all I can and would wish for.
  • New Year Savings: Low Prices at High End Stores
If luxury retailer prices aren't normally within your budget, this is a good time of year to take advantage deep discounts at top department stores.  One of my favorite stores, Nordstrom is offering huge sales - up to 70% on women's, men's, and kid's clothing, accessories and shoes.  Here's an outfit I put together online for nearly half off the original prices of each piece:  This Lily Wrap Front Matte Jersey Dress is ideal for the office or special occasions so you're sure to get a lot of wear out of it.  The style will work well for all seasons too.  Right now it's $58,  33% off! • Happy New Year!
While most of the people around the world are still burping up a small reminder of the last New Year’s resolutions, it is time to make New Year’s resolutions once again. Why do people make New Year’s resolutions? Well people make New Year’s resolution because they try to be and in fact can become a much better human being. I would like to bet that everybody knows someone who seems to be just perfect — for them that person forever looks tremendous; a person who dedicates plenty of time to both his family as well as career; a person whose house always seems spotless, whose children are perfectly obedient! People must wonder how they manage to do it all... Well, let's stop wondering about it and do something! And it’s the perfect time to make a small New Year’s resolution to become a bit more confident in business and life, and always more organized! Back to reality...it's hard to follow the New Year’s resolutions! Here's how I'm starting out: 1. BE REALISTIC. A lot
