Elaine Joyce, a champion amateur golfer, and her father were looking forward to a weekend tournament last May at the respected public course on Cape Cod where they hold full memberships. But their names were not listed when officials posted the tee times for the event at the Dennis Pines course. Joyce’s father, Pat, received a call from the club’s head pro, Russell Champoux, who said the tournament was not open to women. It did not matter that Joyce would play from the men’s tees. Or that she had won more than 20 club championships over the years. Or that she had captured the title in 2001 at an event for the state’s top female club champions. Joyce complained to the town, but over the next several months, Robert Canevazzi, the Dennis town administrator, did not budge. When Joyce filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination in July, the club said its actions were not discriminatory. In a letter, Canevazzi told Joyce that the club would begin

Phil Mickelson held off a strong challenge from fellow American Jeff Quinney to grab a one-shot lead after Saturday's third round at the Northern Trust Open. Four strokes ahead of the field overnight, Mickelson fired a one-under-par 70 in firm, fast conditions at Riviera Country Club to post an 11-under total of 202. Former U.S. amateur champion Quinney joined Mickelson at the top of the leaderboard with an ace at the par-three sixth before slipping back into second place with a 67. American John Rollins was a further four shots back at six under after shooting a six-birdie 69 on a breezy, sun-drenched day. World number two Mickelson, in pursuit of his 33rd PGA Tour title but his first at Riviera, made a faltering start when he three-putted for bogey at the par-three fourth. His playing partner Quinney had birdied the first and fifth, where he rolled in a 21-footer, and briefly snatched the outright lead with his spectacular ace at the sixth. His tee

Phil Mickelson seems determined to add Los Angeles to his collection of West Coast trophies.A year after losing at Riviera in a playoff, Mickelson played golf as spectacular as the weather Friday in the Northern Trust Open, finishing with a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 7-under 64 and a four-shot lead.Even after starting with a 68, Mickelson felt he was close to putting his game together. It started with a 3-iron to 12 feet on the par-5 first for a simple birdie, and built momentum with a 60-foot birdie on the fifth and never slowed. When he finished his best score ever at Riviera, he was at 10-under 132 and in firm command going into the weekend."This is a tournament that has eluded me," Mickelson said of the only city in the West Coast Swing where he hasn't won. "The West Coast means a lot to me."Robert Allenby, who won at Riviera in 2001 in the cold and rain, did OK in warm sunshine with a 66 that put him at 136 with Jeff Quinney, who made bogey on the final hole for a

South Korea's K.J. Choi shrugged off increasingly blustery conditions to go into an early one-shot lead in the Northern Trust Open first round on Thursday. The 37-year-old, who won his seventh PGA Tour title at last month's Sony Open in Hawaii, fired a flawless six-under-par 65 at Riviera Country Club. South Korea-born Kevin Na, who is now a U.S. citizen, was alone in second place after carding a five-birdie 65. Americans Chad Campbell and Vaughn Taylor opened with 67s while world number two Phil Mickelson, the highest-ranked player in a strong field at Riviera, returned a 68. Choi, who spent last week relaxing at his Texas home, made a fast start in calm early conditions with birdies on the first two holes. With his approach play in sparkling order, he then picked up further shots at the fifth and seventh to reach the turn in four-under 31. As the wind strengthened on the tree-lined layout, he struck a sand wedge approach to three feet to set

- - - Wisconsin News (Northwoods local) - - -This week's Florence Mining News has published a letter to the editor about NewPage Corporation. For those who have been following this on my blog (see 24-January-2008 for the latest post on this subject) then you know that NewPage bought the local papermill in Niagara, Wisconsin, and then announced it would be closing it at the end of April, resulting in 319 lost jobs. The Niagara mill has been operating in this small town for 119 years. Here is the letter from p.3 of the Florence Mining News dated February 13:Dear Editor:NewPage. Who and what are you? A corporate entity or just a name thrown out here to give the illusion of hope and security? All I know is you blew into town on a cold winter wind and used smoke and mirrors to create that illusion. But then I guess the name can be taken two ways. One: As it was taken (the illusion) by 300+ people who now have to wonder how long they'll have to tread water to keep their noses above i
It is best, when watching the evening news, to have pre-recorded it. That way you can skip through the horrors of the day and sports (unless you need to collect on Super Bowl bets) and catch only the good stuff like lottery results, the weather and, if you’re lucky, a report on somebody who has just turned 100 but can still dance the cha-cha-cha. The evening news, when carefully edited in this manner, can be almost enjoyable to watch.Of course, the role of the news anchor is essential to the proper enjoyment of a news broadcast. The entire effect of a news broadcast can be thrown off by a newscaster with a face that suggests he’s 60 and a dyed head of hair that suggests a tin of shoe polish applied liberally. A good set of teeth, as well as age appropriate hair and makeup (and in some cases eyewear or modest head accoutrements – earrings, hair accessories etc – in the case of a female broadcaster) are essential. A newscaster must also be able to maintain a steady, neutral tone,

Yesterday I was reading the The Economist (issue date Feb. 9, 2008) and noticed an article about Kalamazoo, Michigan, titled "A Promising Future: Will an imaginative new approach to economic development work?".[Excerpt:] - "KALAMAZOO, a medium-sized post-industrial city in Michigan, shares the problems of countless such others across America. Its population is shrinking and its poverty rate hovers around 30%. But in November 2005 it received good news: in an effort to revitalise the city, anonymous donors would pay the college tuition fees of every graduate from Kalamazoo's public schools."[End excerpt.]How awesome is that? The premise is that offering free college tuition to the city's youth will be an attractive incentive for families to move to (or remain in) the City of Kalamazoo. It is further envisioned that this investment in education will attract business and industry -- eager to take advantage of the "new skilled workforce".The program is still too new to judge its e

In the news today about the Grammy Awards with Amy Winehouse winning. Saying is she setting a good message to young people issues with drugs then winning five Grammy awards. My thoughts are she deserved to win the awards her album is awesome. I think her music is so amazing she is one the best artists that has come long in years. They judged it right she should be judged on her music not her personal life. Young people should know we all are human and know that her using drugs is not good since she is in rehab. I think she is real who does not hide who she is or her issues in life. At least she is real and not hiding it like most do in the business being fake. I really like her she has a true and raw talent don’t see much anymore. She is one of those performers that can become legend in the future whatever happens with her life. She is different and interesting with a great talent for creating great songs with a powerful voice to words. - Music Amy Winehouse - Music Grammy Awards - T

The nearest "commercial" airport for me is across the stateline in Upper Michigan -- specifically the small Ford Airport at Iron Mountain-Kingsford. The only scheduled airline these past few years has been Skyway operating on behalf of Wisconsin-based Midwest. I think I speak for just about everyone when I say that we have come to appreciate the fine service offered by both carriers.Regretttably, our Midwest-connection ends June 5 when Northwest's carrier, Mesaba, is scheduled to begin service. The frequency of flights is being reduced, the destinations changed (no longer can we fly to Milwaukee -- the new choice is either Detroit or Minneapolis with 1 flight daily each).Chatting with the locals and some business owners I get the impression that many of them will in future drive to Green Bay (about 2 hours south of here) and continue to fly Midwest from there.I truly hope Northwest / Mesaba succeeds at Ford Airport, but Midwest will be a tough act to follow. It will be interesting to s
