  • If the NHL was a high school…
HockeyDrunk said that if the NHL was a high school… Anaheim would be the kid that beats you up and steals your lunch money. Detroit would be the foreign exchange student. Nashville would be that kid with the dad in the military. He’s cool, but you don’t want to be best friends with him because you know he’ll [...]
  • Chelios becomes 2nd oldest NHL player
In tonight’s game against the Colorado Avalanche, veteran defenseman Chris Chelios becomes the second oldest NHL player in the history of the game to play in a game. Who did he pass tonight? A goaltender, Moe Roberts. Joe Polletier @ GreatestHockeyLegends.com has more on this former player, who happened to play in his last game [...]
  • Revenues, payrolls & winning in the NHL
I am currently taking Sports Economics at UM and earlier in the semester, I had to complete a project regarding revenues, payrolls, and winning in the NHL. I got an A- on the paper and would have gotten an A except I did not include the two-team diagram graph that was apparently required. The paper [...]
  • BTJ one of the top 10 NHL blogs
According to Sports Business Daily, Behind the Jersey was named one of the top ten NHL blogs! It really is quite an honor to come in at No. 10 considering there are so many amazing NHL blogs that didn’t make the list. It’s amazing that this blog started as a hobby during the start of [...]
  • NHL.com gets a face lift
The official website of the NHL, NHL.com, has gotten a new look just in time for the start of the season. I must say that I do think it’s an improvement particularly now that the scores for tonight’s game are shown on the top of the home page and you don’t have to switch to [...]
  • NHL 2K8 Demo on Xbox Live Marketplace
A demo for the already-released NHL 2K8 has been made available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. If you’ve been holding out to decide between 2K8 and 08, now you’ll be able to compare the demos and see which tickles your fancy. The critical reception for NHL 2K8, which released on September 11, has been an overall “meh,” with the game’s supposedly revolutionary new right analog stick controls being seen as a step backwards more than anything else. In the demo, which weighs in at 1GB, you’ll be able to try out that new control scheme, along with the new face off and goaltending systems. Once you’ve given it a try, let us know what you think about the new control scheme and which of the two hockey games (if any) you plan on picking up.Source: Gaming Today Online Games Xbox Live NHL 2K8 demo hockey games Console Gaming Sports games
  • NHL wants to change schedule
It felt so good to write that headline. Apparently, the NHL Board of Governors met yesterday and had a little discussion regarding the current scheduling format, which highlights intradivision games and hates playing the other conference. It sounds like most of the teams agree that it is time to change the schedule after giving this [...]

  • Is ESPN in the NHL’s future?
Thanks to a link from Paul @ Kukla’s Korner, the SportsBusiness Journal is reporting that the NHL approached ESPN about showing NHL games on ESPN2 as early as the 2008-2009 season. Multiple sources described the conversations as preliminary. The two started talking the week of July 16 when the NHL approached ESPN about NBC’s nine-game regular-season schedule, plus the playoffs. NBC holds the rights to air the coming season as part of a revenue-sharing agreement, and the network holds a one-year option for the 2008-09 season. It’s not certain that NBC would exercise that option, given the sport’s tepid ratings on the network. Regular-season ratings on NBC averaged a 0.9 during the 2006-07 season and a 1.0 during the 2007-08 season over nine telecasts. Now I could totally be reading the excerpt above wrong, but would the NHL and ESPN only happen if NBC drops their option with the league? Is there any way that Versus can drop the NHL and have TV deals with ESPN and NBC? A retu
  • NHL is looking pretty good
So yesterday, I made a draft post in WordPress and planned on completing it tonight. I come online to finish it off and I find that IwoCPO @ Abel to Yzerman has already discussed the very thing I had planned on bringing up. Does Little Gary have any clue about the opportunity dropped in his lap? The other “big three” sports are all mired in controversy and the NHL, if marketed, could come out smelling like a pretty little rose. A rose perched on the sill of your kitchen. Yes, surrounded by empty beer bottles and crusted mac and cheese bowls, but a rose nonetheless. Baseball’s lead story: the dirtbag that is Barry Bonds. Football: the absolute dirtbag that is Michael Vick. Basketball: a gambling controversy that’s going to spread to every corner of that league of thugs. Compared to other leagues, the NHL could be looking pretty good in terms of public relations. No, I’m not talking about TV ratings or contracts, etc. because the NHL is obviously lacking in those d
  • NHL releases 2007-2008 schedule
The NHL released the 2007-2008 schedule early yesterday afternoon. Instead of looking at possible matchups I’d want to catch at the Joe, I was looking at my work schedule (I still get a big smile on my face every time I think about my new internship). The Wings will open their regular season at home against the defending Stanley Cup champs, the Anaheim Ducks, on October 3. Not only did the Ducks kick us out of the playoffs, but Todd Bertuzzi and Mathieu Schneider left the Winged Wheel this offseason to join the flock. 14 of the last 15 games of the season are against Central Division opponents. Why do we always have to end the season on such a boring note? Seriously. In mid-October, the Wings go on their first West Coast road trip as they’ll head to LA, Anaheim, San Jose, and Pheonix. Their Western Canada road trip won’t be until mid-February when they’ll go to Dallas, Colorado, Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmonton. As you know, I am not a fan of the current schedul
  • NHL free agency update
I drove home from my family’s house up north because I have class tomorrow so I needed to catch up on all the signings I missed during a 4.5 hour timespan. Wow! The Rangers are going to be craazy this year and I love it - they’re my team in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers are going from an awful team to a playoff contender. Rangers sign Drury AND Gomez The NY Rangers signed both Chris Drury and Scott Gomez to long-term contracts worth a lot of money. Drury received a five year deal valued at $35.25 million, which works out to be $7.05/year against the salary cap. He will make $7.1 million in his first two seasons. Gomez signed a longer deal with the Rangers for $51.5 million. In his first season, he’ll make $10 million. $7.357 million will count against the cap each year of his contract. ‘’It’s pretty exciting,'’ Rangers general manager Glen Sather said. ‘’We ranked them both as number ones, and we never expected to get both of
  • My weekend at the NHL Draft
I went down to Columbus this past weekend for the 2007 NHL Draft with a good friend of mine. We got down to Columbus around 3pm on Friday afternoon and left around noon on Saturday. Here’s a brief run down of the fun things we did or saw including photographs after the jump… We first got in line for the half hour long Rick Nash autograph signing. The guy in line behind us got interviewed by the local TV station and gave some really insightful quotes (note the sarcasm). It was a free autograph signing and he signed the same photo for each person. It was the first time I’ve gone to a really free signing - no signing fee and a free photo. Nice! After we got our Rick Nash autographs, we stopped inside the Blueline store so I could buy a draft t-shirt. We then went back outside and waited for the Yellowcard concert to begin. The concert lasted an hour and included their popular songs as well as new tracks off their CD coming out in mid-July. They even owned an Avs fan
  • Wings believe first two picks make NHL
The Detroit Red Wings believe their first two picks, Brendan Smith and Joakim Andersson, have a good shot at making the NHL. They obviously are not ruling out their other three picks making the NHL. The Wings only had five picks in the 2007 NHL Draft, the lowest for the franchise since 1969. Red Wings Central has a brief summary of each pick: 1 (27). Brendan Smith, D, 6-1, 170, Toronto (Ont. Jr. A), 39-12-24-36-90. Nill likened the mobile Smith to Niklas Kronwall and projects him as a top-four defenseman who can quarterback a power play. They have until 2011 to sign him as he will play NCAA hockey at Wisconsin. 3 (88). Joakim Andersson, LW, 6-2, 198, Frolunda (Swe-J20), 41-20-26-46-60. Nill compared him to a cross between Red Wings forward Johan Franzen and Dallas Stars forward Joel Lundqvist. Skating is a concern, but Andersson projects as a third-liner who can contribute offensively. 5 (148). Randy Cameron, C, 5-11, 175, Moncton (QMJHL), 70-17-22-39-44. The versatile Cameron was th
  • 2007 NHL Draft
I will be attending the NHL Draft in Columbus this year and will be staying overnight so I can watch the first round on Friday and then the second and third rounds on Saturday before heading back to Michigan. Michael @ Army of Ohio and Drew @ End of the Bench have arranged a hockey blogger get together and it sounds like quite a few bloggers will be there and do a podcast as well (I believe). What? 2007 Draft blogger gathering Where? Bud Light Arena Pub Nationwide Arena When? 4:30pm EST I am going to the draft with a good friend of mine and she wants to check out the festivities prior to the start of the draft so I think I’m only going to be able to stop by and say hi to the bloggers before 6:15. Hopefully, I’ll be able to catch up with some of them between the time we’re allowed to find our seats and the start of the draft. I hope to meet as many hockey bloggers there as possible! What will my friend and I be doing before 6:15? Well, Rick Nash is doing an autograph
  • Whalers in the NHL Draft
Aside from seeing who the Wings pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, my biggest focus will be seeing who drafts the two Plymouth Whalers’ players who become eligible this year (Jeremy Smith and Chris Terry). I know I’ll see Smith get drafted and hopefully I’ll catch Terry get drafted (I’ll be there for the first three rounds before heading back to Michigan). Jeremy Smith is the number one ranked North American goaltender in what has been considered a weak draft year for goaltenders. The weakest area of this year’s draft class is goaltending. Jeremy Smith of the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers and Trevor Cann of the OHL’s Peterborough Petes are the top two ranked North American goalies by NHL Central Scouting. “We’re not as keen on goalies this year, it’s not a great goalie class,” said Kekalainen. “Unless we feel somewhere in the draft there’s a steal of a goaltender there, we’re not going to be focusing too much on tha
  • 2007 NHL mock drafts
The Wings currently have pick #27 in the first round and no selections in the second. Here are the selections made for the Wings in various mock drafts… Fox Sports: 27. Red Wings Nick Ross 6-1, 195 D Regina/WHL GP: 70, G: 7, A: 24, Pts: 31 At first glance you do not see a great skater or shot from the point, high-end puck skills or intimidating size, but what you get is a competitor with good hockey sense. He is one of those defenseman who makes smart decisions with or without the puck and is the glue of your blueline since he is so dependable. He makes good passes out of his zone and sets up his forwards to make a rush while remaining poise under duress. Manages to be at the right place at the right time and uses good body position and angles well to stay on the right side of the puck. Shows a gritty side as he willingly blocks shots and takes hits but he can deliver crushing checks due to his good timing as well. Can contribute on both specialty teams and could develop into
