  • Holiday Shopping NYC Style
This week I'm in NYC for an appearance on Fox and Friends to talk a little bit about cool gadgets that make great gifts for teens.  The natural upside of this little excursion is being able to do some holiday shopping in the Big Apple.  New York is one of the best cities for shopping IN THE WORLD.  No matter who you're shopping for - mom, Uncle Bob, your niece and nephews - there's a shop in here with just the right thing. This time, I got to visit a store that's brand new to American shores - Uniqlo.  It's Japan's answer to The Gap and it's brimming with colorful sweaters and stylishly warm jackets for men and women.  Today, I picked up two great looking cashmere sweaters for under $100.  One sweater is a very basic black turtleneck, slim fitting and the perfect weight for staying warm and looking good.  The other sweater I picked up is a gorgeous purple hue (my color of the season), a very sweet crew neck with nice d

  • nyc marathon photos 2007
Today my dad and I stood on 138th Street between Rider Avenue and Walton Avenue where we watched the marathon's participants run westwards under the Metro North overpass towards the Madison Avenue Bridge back into Manhattan. Around where we stood on 138th Street, the crowd was thin when we first arrived there but it looked as if closer towards Third Avenue there were more people. I could cross easily from one side of 138th Street to the other where we stood, but once the elite runners had passed and then after a sizable gap appeared, the majority of the marathon's participants made it our way after which time crossing the street became impossible.A number of police officers and a group of enthusiastic fire fighters were at the scene. A small group of members from the Van Courtlandt Track Club had assembled along 138th Street just behind the overpass and they were very supportive of the runners with cheers and words of encouragement. So, as the marathon progressed, more and more peo

  • Six Years: NYC Remembered
There's not much to say here. What can you say about something like this? We are fortunate and unfortunate to have been alive to witness, even from a distance, one of the most frightening moments in the history of this country. Are there words to truly describe what many of us felt then and feel now? I still can't watch the videos or look at the pictures for more than a few moments. I didn't know anybody in NYC, but for whatever reason just seeing it even in still form brings me to tears. So, for this day and this day only, let's all forget the war inIraq and everything else going on in this country. Let's forget who's running for election, what new laws are coming in, etc.All we should do at this moment is remember. Remember all the men and women in the trade center and at ground zero, alive and dead, who saw it happen.Remember the fire fighters who risked their lives doing what they volunteered to do.Remember. That's the only thing we as a people can do. Most of us weren't there. We f

  • Quick Highlights from NYC Fashion Week
Instead of battling the hoards of voracious fashion addicts in the Big Apple this week, I've chosen to monitor some of my favorite fashion blogs for the latest news on "what's next".  Though it's just been a couple of days, I'm already seeing some exciting trends for the coming seasons.  Key colors are soft grays and vibrant yellow in flowing, feminine fabrics.  On the flip side, there is still a strong trend in menswear for women - vests, tailored trousers, etc.  Perhaps my favorite trend so far is the return of the natural waist!  Hurray!  Break out those belts and sashes and show off your curves.  It's the natural evolution as rises are on the rise in designer jeans.  (Thank goodness no more muffin tops and plumber's butt to battle!)

  • NYC GPS A Go For Taxi Drivers
Remember the outrage displayed from some NYC taxi drivers over the proposed installation of GPS in their taxis? Well, it's currently being installed and will be completed within several months. The New York Taxi Workers Alliance has long opposed the plan – claiming it is an invasion of driver's privacy.“Why the TLC wants to know when and where and what time a taxi driver has taken their kids to the park, or gone out to a restaurant, or to the movies, is beyond our understanding,” sad NY Taxi Workers Alliance Executive Director Bhairavi Desai.Get this straight lady, if you transport my daughter anywhere, I DO WANT TO KNOW ALL THE DETAILS.And the driver's privacy? What privacy? When a taxi driver is on duty that is company time; not personal time. So, what kind of an argument is that? I want ALL taxi driver's moves monitored. In every city. I want your every move monitored. You are now being watched... Trackbacks:Methodist Church Goes MuslimExcerpt: British Methodist Church

  • NYC Police Allegedly Brutalize Brutality Lawyer Trying to Stop Police Brutality
Can you say "ironic"?The New York City police department, once headed by Rudy friend, Bernie Kerik, is now being run by the same guy who trampled the civil rights of protesters during the 2004 Repug Convention in New York City and created his "own little Guantanamo on the Hudson" to detain the protesters.Considering the leadership of those two, it isn't surprising the the NYC police feel entirely at ease in beating the crap out of a prone, handcuffed black man in full view, and then wailing on a civil rights lawyer who objects.Welcome to the New Order. From a June 25, 2007 New York Newsday account:"City and state officials are denouncing the arrests of a civil rights attorney and his wife after the couple intervened when, they said, police beat a handcuffed teen in central Brooklyn. Protesters returned to a police station yesterday to rally against the arrests and alleged brutality."Michael Warren, who once represented Tupac Shakur and the teens charged in the Central Park jogger case,

  • “The Naked Candidate” Hits NYC, Appeals for International Support
Photo courtesy of here. Accompanied by a video crew, as well as The Naked Cowboy and a guitar strumming press secretary, Social Ironist Party candidate Sean “The Naked Candidate” Holbrook is taking his political campaign to the streets New York City from July 14-16. His attire: tighty-whities, dress shoes and a tie - because politicians simply must wear ties if they wish to be seen as legitimate candidates by the voting public. Sean’s outfit is meant to symbolize our need for openness and transparency in government, while paying tribute to American Icon and fellow S.I.P member The Naked Cowboy. Near-nakedness is also a necessity for a non-bankrolled campaign to get any kind of attention in our current political landscape, which is almost entirely based around the fundraising process. As the ultimate embodiment of modern America, the S.I.P has recently embraced the joys of fundraising. The campaign website, http://www.voteseanholbrook.com, has 20+ fundraising buttons
  • NYC Trans Fat Ban and Calorie Counting in Place!
As of yesterday, New York City is now on the look-out for Trans Fat. It could be anywhere: in your french fries, in your salad, even lurking in your closet waiting to jump out and scare you when you least expect it! Actually, I made up that last part.More interesting to me will be the impact of the second legislation that takes effect, that requirement for fast-food restaurants to post their calories. It seems like each chain is taking various approaches. Starbucks is putting their information in a spiral flip book. Does anyone expect this to have an impact? Doubtful. The regulation calls for posting the calories in equal size next to the price.Starbucks is not the only violator: Burger King, McDonald's, and Wendy's are all giving the middle finger to the rule; but since their latest stay in court means they won't get fined until at least October.

  • RSS and SEO gets a full house at SES NYC
Times have changed!  A year ago there would definitely not have been standing room only in a session on Feeds and SEO.     RSS and content syndication have gone from being a ‘techie only’ thing to a mainstream communication and SEO tool. “People are sitting on the floor, this room is packed. I guess blogs and SEO make for a popular topic,” said SE RoundTable. RSS feeds can boost your SEO efforts, on your blog and on your webpages.  But the trick is to optimize the content. While ther are some technical SEO tips and tricks, it’s still all about the content. Without keyword research and a content strategy you’re not likely to find yourself on page one of Google.  But having good content that is optimized in a feed will get you there much faster. So if you are looking to improve your search results and you do not yet have your news content in a feed, take another look at content syndication as an SEO strategy.
