In an attempt to overcome any weather disturbances during the opening ceremony of the 2008 summer Olympics to be held in Beijing, researchers in China are planning to seed any threatening clouds with chemicals, which would delay rainfall. According to a report in Discovery News, this is being done to prevent rain from spoiling the opening ceremony of the mega sporting event. "It would be nice if the experiment was run and published prior to the big day so it could be weighed on its scientific merits," said Roscoe Braham, who pioneered weather modification experiments at the University of Chicago in the 1950s. The benefits of this process are not limited to sporting events like the Olympics, and have far reaching implications. Weather modification programs like these have been around for more than 50 years, with California and 10 western states in the United States regularly lacing clouds with various substances to increase snow and rain. There will be a benefit held on February 16, 2008 for the Hopkinton Special Olympics. One of my friends, Alec Levine of Hopkinton will be participating for the third time in the annual Massachusetts Special Olympics Passion Plunge by jumping into the Atlantic Ocean at Revere Beach, rain, snow, sleet or shine.Alec takes the Passion Plunge for the benefit of Hopkinton's Special Olympic athletes. The Hopkinton Special Olympics program began four years ago. Initially, basketball was the only sport in which special athletes could participate. In only four years the program has grown not only in the number of athletes, but also the number of sports offered. Hopkinton's Special Olympians are now participating in basketball, softball, soccer, and bowling. In order for the these programs to continue successfully donations are needed. Donations can be large or small - every little bit helps. If you are interested in offering support you donate at First Givin

Tibetans-living-in-exile have planned a march from India to Tibet to protest against the Beijing Olympics, which they say is China's propaganda to gain international acceptance to its "illegal" rule in Tibet. Five leading Tibetan organisations today said that hundreds of Tibetans would march from Dharamsala to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, on March 10, the day Tibetans would be observing the 49th anniversary of the failed uprising against Chinese rule. Tibetan Youth Congress President Tsewang Rigzin said the Tibetans must utilise the time over the next eight months to fight "China's massive Olympics propaganda campaign." "We must seize this unprecedented opportunity to have the Tibetan voice of resistance heard loud and clear by the Chinese leadership and the people around the world," said Rigzin. The march organisers have called upon Tibetans worldwide to use peaceful means to protest the Beijing Olympics. Tibetans will engage in non-violent mass protests
Marko did a review about some of the best ski blogs online a few weeks ago. I would like to add Jon Olssson’s videoblog to the list.
Jon Olsson posts clips to his blog during his skiing season. Here is a pretty good interview about Jon’s view to videoblogging and his skiing career in general. What [...]
Roger Clemens, barring Alzheimer's, may pitch for Team USA in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
After retiring in 2001 and 2006, Clemens is attempting to outdo the Energizer Bunny.
His return to the Yankees this year was subpar and missed two outings due to injury while sporting a 6-6 record and a 4+ ERA.
In his stint in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, Clemens went 1-1.
If Clemens does pitch in the

At first glance, we’re not sure whether CECT designed its cell phone around an Olympic mascot or some sort of cellular voodoo doll.

:: TODAY AUGUST 8th MARKS the one-year countdown to the start of the XX1X Olympiad in Beijing. Olympic Watch states one year before the Olympics: MEDIA FREEDOM is nowhere in sight. Independent monitors, such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), register at least 30 Chinese journalists and 50 bloggers and Internet activists in jail. Chinese domestic media face a policy of systematic censorship and the reporting of international media into China is blocked. [...]As Human Rights Watch recently reported again, human rights violations are taking place in direct relation to the Olympic Games themselves: hundreds of thousands of Beijing residents have been evicted without proper compensation. A leader of their peaceful protests, Ye Guozhu, has been imprisoned for four years and reportedly tortured. :: GOVERNMENTS ALL OVER THE WORLD will - concerning CCP and China - soon after the Olympics in Beijing 2008 say: "I didn´t see", "I didn´t hear", and "I didn´t know". Michal Nissensson writes in Omedia:In a world awash with information and with the scale of horrors in China, the human rights abuses, and organ harvesting out there for all to see, world leaders cannot absolve themselves of culpability and say "I didn´t see", "I didn´t hear", and "I didn´t know". Those who consciously elect to sit idly by what is happening China will one day have to explain to themselves and their voters why they failed to move heaven and earth to change the situation and why they chose to support the continuation of the Olympic Games, tainted as it was with anti-democratic acts of inhuman cruelty.
