  • Open Source Food
When worlds collide... As a technology professional, focused on the Internet, how could I not love the web site Open Source Food? If only for the name, it's a great idea, but the content is wonderful as well. OSF is a social networking site that is all about recipes that have pictures and are rated by the community. The site is not nearly as vast as AllRecipes, having only launched recently, and not having nearly as many users. But the users do seem to be loyal and active, similar in that Web 2.0-way to users of Yelp and in that Web 1.0-way to users of Chowhound.Originally, I heard about this site through a co-worker, Tim, who I believe is related or friends with the founders of OSF. Since you likely don't know Tim, I get the honor of letting you know. Go check out Open Source Food and let us know what you think.
  • NASA 2.0? Open Source Implications:
A few days back, Google CEO Eric Schmidt advised the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) that it borrow a few pages out of the Web 2.0 book. If NASA does take this advice seriously, it would result in some of the best minds collaborating, experimenting and producing some of the best technologies ever. The CEO did not hesitate to admit that while open source had it benefits, it would also come with the risk of the nation spending the American peoples tax money; not to mention the danger of such a project. Fine tuning would certainly be of vital importance. The maxims that underlie the Web 2.0 meme emphasize interaction and innovation and involve intense use of open source software. The term open source essentially denotes source code of certain softwares that can be obtained freely and applied along with the right to use it. Open source softwares have been used in a lot of different types of ventures like for coding firewalls, computer security software

  • History of Zencart - Open Source Shop Script
Even before the release of osCommerce MS2.2.2, in June 2003 the new domain name Zen-Cart.com had been registered. A team was put together comprised of Ian C Wilson, Kim Elliott, Steve Strassburg and Linda McGrath, and the first Zen-Cart.com Web site was posted in November 2003. Besides streamlining the programming and utilizing CSS (cascading stylesheets) rather than the evil and outdated font tags, the Zen Cart team's philosophy was to make it easy to upgrade the store, and to offer frequent, small updates. The Zen Cart team released its version 1.3.8 on November 30 of 2007. The group has announced that by February 5, 2008, the minimum supported PHP version will be the current version, PHP 5.2. Wilson says the group created an umbrella company in March, 2007 which is exploring the possibility of financing the Zen-Cart open source e-commerce system, called Zen Ventures LLC. If the group is successful at obtaining financing, some method of earning revenues would necessarily have to f
• Open Source locoGPS Module Coming to iPhone
Part Foundry are currently working on a dongle that will bring the long-desired GPS feature to the iPhone. Branded as locoGPS, the device promises true GPS backed by open source software, but if the teaser video is any indication, it may not be the GPS experience you're expecting. The photo you see above is only a concept design. In its current stage of development, the locoGPS is a rough piece of hardware that uses a slightly confusing toggle process to get GPS working on any Jailbroken iPhone (they are also in the testing phases for an iPod touch solution). The early software merely finds your coordinates and plugs them into the Google Maps application. For now, thats it. The beauty of the locoGPS is that it can be improved upon because of it's open source design. If this gets a real time navigational map and a few useful plugins, it could be a popular iPhone add-on. But for now, the locoGPS raises eyebrows on potential alone. Part Foundry expects the locoGPS to start shipping in Feb
  • Cuento navideño: Open source I

  • Osalt - Open source as alternative
Link | Webi

  • WordPress vs. Movable Type: Open Source Blogging Software Showdown on Publishing 2.0
Link:for this Post: WordPress vs. Movable Type: Open Source Blogging Software Showdown. I use Typepad so the launch of an open source version of Movable Type, the software that powers us Typepad blogs is exciting. Scott Karp says that with with Version 4.0 of Movable Type: Movable Type is now trying to leapfrog past WordPress by introducing community features that give blog readers the ability to create social network profiles and post content. Its interesting to note that this feature is competitive in some respects to Plucks SiteLife, KickApps, and a number of other community feature platforms, although it seems to me that the potential value is limited to sites that work entirely on Movable Type, i.e. not apparently useful for sites that use other content management systems, as almost all large media and corporate sites do. I had a lot of fun with this post. I have been looking for a community solution for my website Island Web and so have checked out a number of sol
