NEW YORK (Reuters) - Motorola Inc and Nortel Networks Corp are in talks to combine their wireless infrastructure units, The Wall Street Journal reported, quoting people familiar with the situation. The talks could create a joint venture with sales of around $10 billion, combining businesses that make network equipment for wireless phone carriers, the newspaper said. Both companies declined comment. Motorola said in January it was exploring strategic options for the future of its handset division, which could include selling the unit. The Journal said Motorola's talks with Nortel were separate to any plans for its handset division. Motorola, the world's third-largest mobile phone maker, which has been losing market share to market leader Nokia Corp and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, is under pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn to split up and increase value for shareholders. Icahn owns a 5 percent stake. Any deal between Motorola and Nortel would follow a wave of mergers in
LONDON (Reuters) - Yahoo is seeking to restart merger talks with AOL as a means of defending itself against an unsolicited bid approach from Microsoft, the Times newspaper said on Monday. The paper, without citing sources, said Yahoo was also considering tie-ups with groups such as Google and Disney. It said Yahoo and AOL had previously tried to join forces, but were unable to agree on the price of a deal. None of the parties mentioned could immediately be reached for comment.
BERLIN (Reuters) - Radical Islamist group al Qaeda plans to carry out attacks in Germany, a senior German intelligence official was quoted as saying on Friday. Bernhard Falk, vice president of Germany's Federal Crime Office (BKA), told German daily Die Welt that al Qaeda forces based on the Pakistani-Afghan border were eyeing German targets. "The basic decision has been made there to carry out attacks in Germany," he said, adding that security risks in Germany had recently intensified. Germany agreed on Wednesday to send more troops to northern Afghanistan. Last year, it foiled a plan by Islamist militants to carry out bomb attacks against U.S. installations in Germany, seizing three men in the Sauerland region. "We have indications that several additional plans are very probably in the works, aside from the plans made by the Sauerland plotters," Falk said, adding that German Muslims were being recruited for training as radicals in Pakistani camps.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A survivor of last month's tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo told the father of a teen-ager killed in the incident that they waved and yelled at the animal just before it struck, a newspaper reported on Friday. Paul Dhaliwal, 19, said he, his brother Kulbir, 23, and friend Carlos Sousa, 17, stood atop a railing in front of the tiger exhibit while taunting the animal, the San Francisco Chronicle said, citing a police document filed in court. The Dhaliwals have not described the event publicly, but police have been investigating whether the Christmas Day attack was provoked by taunting. The female Siberian tiger scaled a 12-1/2-foot wall to attack them. She mauled the Dhaliwal brothers and killed Sousa before police shot her to death. The document was an affidavit filed by police to request a warrant to search Kulbir Dhaliwal's car, the Chronicle said. During their search, they found marijuana and a partially filled bottle of vodka, it said. Police hav

I love Mother Earth, nature and all, but I honestly prefer plastic bags at the grocery compared to paper bags. One of the reasons is that it has handles, which makes them easier to carry, considering the things that are inside of it.Second, since I do most of my grocery shopping with my eldest daughter, if I choose the paper bag over the plastic bag, I end up with no free hand to hold her in case she runs around or something.Lastly, even if I do prefer plastic bags over paper bags, I make sure I use them again and again, like for storing papers, for garbage, or anything I can think of.

DALLAS (AP) - When editorial writers at The Dallas Morning News chose the illegal immigrant as the newspaper’s Texan of the Year, they expected some criticism. But not this: 800 blog postings and more than 150 letters to the editor blasting the decision.

DALLAS (AP) – Because everybody in Texas “has felt the tidal wave of his presence,” the illegal immigrant has been named the Texan of the Year by The Dallas Morning News.
“We can’t seem to live with him and his family, and if we can live without him, nobody’s figured out how,” the story posted on [...]
This is a really slick site chronicling the use of 'paper' to build boats... from the 1800's until the present day, this material has been used to build full sized boats. All of us who are interested in building and alternative materials will find something of interest here.
Paper Boats? Is this for real?
This web page is devoted to an obscure subject in the history of technology: the manufacture of full size boats from paper during the later half of the 19th century. Not toy boats, but boats people could ride around in; racing shells, canoes and rowboats. There was even at least one steam launch built. This may seem like an extremely odd thing to be doing, but it made sense at the time. (Trust me!) If you read elsewhere on these pages you'll discover why. Start with the "Short History" below.
Today, amateur boat builders occasionally take a stab at making a paper boat for their own and other's amusement. For several years there was even a quarterly newsletter for paper boat

Live Wire! | Puff and Jackie Paper, Together Again
Some are slightly depressed at how 'Puff the Magic Dragon' ends. Let's be honest it's a bummer that Jackie Paper grew up and ditched his dragon friend. But as it turns out, that's not the end of the story. Since we had Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary - the man who created Puff - on the show in December, we decided to surprise him with a visit from a couple of his oldest friends.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will phase in cleaner motor fuel in Beijing in the next two months while keeping pump prices unchanged, a local newspaper said on Tuesday, in a move to clean the capital's smoggy skies ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games. Oil product wholesalers and retailers will be required to start supplying gasoline and diesel fuel conforming to the cleaner Euro IV standard from Jan. 1, and complete a replenishing of their tanks with the new fuel by the end of February, the Beijing News said. The cost of Euro IV fuel, which permits 50 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur in gasoline, is 0.4 yuan per litre higher than Euro III fuel, which permits 150 ppm. The higher cost for Euro IV standard fuel will not be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices, however, as the National Development and Reform Commission has not granted the necessary permit, the Beijing News said, quoting an official with the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce.

Masking paper is a tightly bonded, poly-coated paper designed specifically for consumer use in repainting and refinishing automobiles. The use of this product ensures the highest quality results by protecting the automobile from paint penetration, seep-through and overspray.Newspaper, which was once widely used when painting cars proved too porous for this purpose and often resulted in paint bleed-through. The poly coating in masking paper offers complete protection for the surfaces it is applied to if it is applied correctly. Masking products provide the maximum penetration resistance from the harsh solvents used in automobile sealers, lacquers, enamel paints and clear coat products. It eliminates dust contamination from fibers and performs well, even during wet sanding. Masking products easily withstand assaults from the powerful exhaust fans used to dry the automobiles after painting.Masking paper must be carefully applied to all non-painted surfaces and secured in place by masking

Back in 2005, when challenged on the constitutionality of the USA Patriot Act, George W. Bush retorted, “Stop throwing the Constitution in my face. It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!” But without that God-damned piece of paper, the presidency doesn’t even exist. Our next president needs to remember that.

The following assignment came from the book “Picture This: How Pictures Work” by Molly Bang. Just a little bit slow in catching up with this ... but I was away last week at the Talis Insight Conference in Birmingham, of which, more later.Have you ever wondered what makes the latest generation of e-book readers different from earlier versions? Well, apart from increased storage capacity that coul doffer up to 200 titles in a device the size of a paperback book... it's the e-paper / e-ink technology that offers readers book pages that come close - quite close, really - to a print-on-paper reading experience. And what does that mean? Well, iRex - makers of the iLiad - explain all in their blog: What makes our electronic paper displays different? To understand the difference we first need to take a closer look at the different components of an EPD and for simplicity sake we will separate the following components...EPD? That's electronic paper display to you and me! A useful read (in fact, the iRex blog is always worth watching) for anyone pondering on the possibilities of e-book

A friend of mine has a degree in philosophy, and every once in a while we we talk philosophically with one another—sometimes for fun, sometimes with total seriousness. Then there are times when, upon first examination, the subject seems absurd, but then it grows on me—and in fact one conversation with this philosopher has stuck with me for some time. The topic is on the one hand crude, and on the other an insight into human habit. It will challenge you to consider the manner with which you approach your lifestyle, and the degree to which you succeed (or fail) at improving in a general sense from the experience of living.
