By Cynthia Johnston CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court granted Baha'is the right to obtain government identity papers on Tuesday, so long as they omit their faith, in an important ruling for members of unrecognised religions. Judicial sources said the court had ruled that Egyptian Baha'i Raouf Hindy could obtain identity documents for his teenage twins by putting a dash in the religion line. The government can still appeal against the judgment which gives members of Egypt's tiny Baha'i community access to official papers largely denied them since 2004. These are needed to enrol in school, marry, drive a car and open a bank account. "This is the first good news that Baha'i Egyptians and their defenders and supporters received in a very long time," said Hossam Bahgat, whose Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights represented the Baha'is in court. "It is an end of a very long and unnecessary ordeal for citizens whose only fault is their refusal to be falsely ident

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia plans to set up a national food stockpile to safeguard the country against rising prices and possible shortages, local newspapers said on Thursday. The plan, outlined to local media on Wednesday, could also see the establishment of a petroleum reserve, even though Malaysia was a net energy exporter, the newspapers added. "It is possible," economist Kamal Salih, who is advising the government on the new measures, was quoted as saying in the New Straits Times. "Advanced countries are already stockpiling petrol, but not us as we are currently a net exporter of oil. However, we will discuss this." On food, Malaysia is looking to stockpile essentials such as rice and cooking oil, the dailies said. "The main focus is to ensure the supply and prices of essential items are stable," Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying. "We can't promise to reduce prices, but what's important is to keep them stable.&

Former Turkish international defender Özalan Alpay, who has said he is close to signing with an MLS team, will be allowed to leave 2nd Bundesliga side Cologne on a free transfer this winter. Alpay had a falling out with his coach Christoph Daum this season and was relegated to the bench. The club agreed to let him stay until the January transfer window to stay fit, according to a statement by the Bundesliga (who also own the rights to this photo). The 34 year old defender had previously been suspended by the club. It has not been reported what MLS team he has been negotiating with, although Alpay said it was not the L.A. Galaxy. Transfermarkt.de speculates it's the Chicago Fire, but don't provide a source for this.

There have been a couple of interesting news stories relating to public speaking in the past couple of days.
Gerald Ratner AutobiographyThe Sunday Times printed an extract from The Rise and Fall...And Rise Again, the autobiography of Gerald Ratner, which is published next week by John Wiley. Ratner is easily one of the best (or worst!) examples of the damage that can be done by including inappropriate material in a speech. In April 1991, he addressed the annual conference of the Institute of Directors and (having been advised to include humour) told his audience that his company was able to sell a sherry decanter for less than a tenner because it was 'total crap' (a line which, remarkably, he had also used a week earlier at another function in the presence of Princess Anne) and that a pair of their earrings were cheaper than a prawn sandwich from Marks and Spencer. He got laughs and a standing ovation but the longer term outcome of his speech was a billion-pound turnover slashed overnig

Life & Style has learned that Kevin’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, initiated a commando-style raid in the dead of the night, at 3 a.m. this morning, to serve Alli Sims, Brit’s assistant/cousin, with papers!
At the time of serving, Alli was at an LA house party, and was “absolutely angry” about what was happening, says an eyewitness. Only a few hours earlier, Brit was having dinner in LA with two male friends, totally unaware of the unfolding drama.
Life & Style has learned that the documents state that Alli will be grilled about everything from A to Z about Brit’s parenting skills – including whether she changes diapers, and whether the mom of two drinks too much.
The papers were served by Aaron Cohen, who owns IMS-Security, an elite Hollywood security firm made up of Israeli Counter Terror commandos.

The News of the World doesn't bother itself with getting its Live Earth coverage bogged down in fretting about polar bears drowning or displaced people fighting over the last remaining popsicle. Oh, no, their report is split into two bits: stunning pics for her and for him. The girls get Johnny Borrell; the boys have that really disturbing moment when Madonna was dry-humping the monitor. (What was going through her head at that point? "At least it doesn't keep murmuring 'no, please not'", presumably.)This is how the NOTW describes the opening minutes of the concert:The crowd, which expected to swell to 70,000 by the close, then rose to its feet as the reunited Genesis used their hit Land Of Confusion to send an environmental message.Singer Phil Collins urged the crowd to make the world "a place worth living in".The Wembley show was closed by Madonna, who earlier set the stage alight with a dazzling rehearsal of classic hits La Isla Bonita and Hung Up, as well as new song Hey You pe
