If you are thinking of heading out to Pasadena to view the 2008 Tournament of Roses Parade- here's a list of tips to make it a fun and comfortable experience1. Layer up- The high for New Year's Day is supposed to hit a high of 76 degrees- but it is very chilly at night and in the early morning. Dress in layers so that you can easily remove a layer or two when it starts to warm up. If you're bringing little ones I would also bring scarves, gloves and mittens.2. Overnight camping is permitted only on the night before the parade. Do not arrive before noon the day before the parade.3. If you plan on camping - bring plenty of blankets, sleeping bags and pillows. You are also allowed to bring a small barbecue. You may not bring tents or start any form of bonfire.4. If you are camping be prepared for a sleepless night. I've camped out a couple of times with my family and didn't sleep a wink. The crowd also gets a bit rowdy. I really wouldn't recommend camping out if you have small children.5.

The 99th annual Newport Beach Christmas Parade will set sail beginning Wednesday Dec 12th for five consecutive nights. The New York Times has called it one of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation. This year's theme is "Twas the night before Christmas"The parade starts off Collins Island at 6:30 pm and finishes at the same site at approximately 8:30 pm on Wednesday and Thursday, and 9:00 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (Two separate routes are run on different evenings.) The boats follow a longer route on the weekend, taking about three hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Parade takes about two and a half hours to make its rounds on Wednesday and Thursday. You can view the parade from pretty much anywhere along the harbor free of cost. The Newport Beach Christmas boat parade starts on Wednesday December 12 and runs through December 16. The parade's starting point is on Collins Island and it begins at 6:30 PM. So, today I marched with the progressive political folks in Millcreek's Fourth of July parade. It was pretty cool. It rained, like last year. I wonder how frequently that is the case for the parade. When we were lining up, the parade marshal said something about us marching in between WCTL (a local Christian radio station) and some group called the Mudslingers. I have no idea what the Mudslingers are. I joked about us and WCTL glaring at each other for the length of the parade, but actually it was fine. Their van was ahead of us, and we walked by I think we wave, and I think that they waved back. I was amused that their mascot is apparently a lion. Does no one else get why a Christian organization choosing a lion is funny? (Hint, think about the ancient Romans, and their less than kind way of dealing with the early Christians.)

For over 50 years, Makawao hosts the largest rodeo in the State of Hawaii. Last year 4,000 spectators enjoyed the competition of bull ruding, barrel racing, calf roping, plus live music, country-western dancing, and delicious food.
This is a three-day event. On Friday, July 6th, at 7:00 p.m., the Bull Bash begins.
Then Saturday morning, July 7th at 9:00 a.m., the Paniolo Parade begins, running up Baldwin Avenue in Makawao to the Eddie Tam Memorial Complex on Makawao Avenue. Both streets will be closed to traffic between 8:45 and 11 a.m. There is no parking in town, but a free shuttle will be provided between the Oskie Rice Arena and downtown Makawao.
At 1 p.m., the rodeo takes off at the arena on Olinda Road and continues at the next day, Sunday July 8th at 1 p.m. Entry into the Oskie Rice Arena is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for children.

The Kamehameha Day Parade will be celebrated this Saturday, June 16 on Front Street, Lahaina. The highlight of the parade are the Pa’u Riders, women riding horses who are both adorned with beautiful flower lei. The word Pa’u means a skirt of multiple layers of fabric that allows female riders ride astride a horse, rather than sidesaddle.
The Floral Parade of 1907 began the tradition whereby each princess representing the eight islands of Hawai‘i Nei wore the flower most popular on her island. A designated color scheme of skirt, bodice and cape also identified the island.
Creating lei for pa’u riders is a cultural art form. Special flowers and materials are carefully selected for its spiritual purpose and the weaving is overseen and approved by a kumu (similar to a shaman).
Each lei is shaken to test its durability, and if one flower falls off, the lei weaver must start all over again.

When they are floating out at sea, they are then a raft of penguins. When they are on land they are a waddle of penguins. And other times they are referred to as a parcel and sometimes a huddle. So then, what is the collective noun for a group of penguin waffles? I personally am quite amused by the phrase "a waddle of penguins", but for this instance I am calling this particular breed a parade of penguins. Quite adorable is this parade, and to think that they are meant for eating seems almost a sacrilege.
