About 600,000 tourists came last year to Boracay in the central Philippines, regarded as one of the world's best holiday destinations, and swam, ate and slept on an island that has only about 18,000 full-time residents. Arrivals should rise to about 670,000 this year, and pressure is mounting on the island's infrastructure as more and more hotels and resorts are built to cater for the boom. The single narrow road that runs the length of Boracay is jam-packed, drain pipes bring floodwater to the beach and hotel taps can suddenly run dry. About 10 tonnes of garbage need to be treated and disposed of each day. I'm not a vegetarian but every once in a while, I meet up with my vegetarian friend Emily for a meal, and to catch up. Today, we squeezed in a lunch in between her classes (she's an NYU Law student) at Vegetarian Paradise 2 Vegetarian Paradise 2 .Our waiter came over and asked if we were ready to order, Emily replied yes, and he jumped to another table. It was really weird. Then, we had trouble flagging him down to order for a while. Later, my hot and sour soup (average vegetarian version) came but Emily's spring rolls didn't. We asked about it, and the waiter said it was coming. Later, the spring rolls appeared on one of the main dishes. This was especially annoying because we expressed to him that we were sharing the main dishes.Anyways, the Tofu and Mixed Vegetables were pretty bland but I enjoyed the (fake) Chicken and Spinach in Curry Sauce. It looks like maybe Salinda will be heading to foster care. I'm asking why. We are willing to have her home, they have determined that she does not need inpatient for psychological evaluation, and that her assessments can be done locally.I think that those involved are unwilling to recommend that she return home because she will not stay home -- she has shown that by her actions and she will has probably told them that she will run away.Court is tomorrow. The whole thing is disturbing to say the least. They are having a hard time finding a foster home that will accommodate her and yet they are reluctant to send her to a correctional facility this early in her involvement in the system.I am just trying to remain calm, enjoy the new boys and relax... there is so little I can do at this point anyway.

There are libraries here! Duh, of course, and we do have libraries in Uruguay, but these are great libraries, with books I actually want to read for pleasure, not just books to study from! I didn't even look for "lighter" fiction (meaning non-classics) in the university library, but there is a branch of the Nottinghamshire library service about 10 minutes for me,and I joined a couple of days ago. And went completely insane immediately thereafter. I ended up lugging home a huge pile of books, and this was my take after I'd whittled down the initial pile I'd gathered, which was easily twice as big. I had to assure myself I can go back and get them later on, once I'm done with these.This is just too cool! I can search the library, reserve books or request them from other branches, renew my books, all online. Ben Lee had a lovely, lovely idea for the video for Love Me Like The World Is Ending. They were going to depict the end of the world, and what people would get up to if the game was finally up. One of the aspects of this tableau was to be naked skateboarding - but, being America, they were only going to get the skaties to wear nude-coloured bodysuits. Only something went wrong:[S]omething must have gotten lost in the translation, a direction must have been misheard, because as we went for our first take of the day, the skateboarders evidently dropped their shorts and skated down Crosby St fully exposed! This would not have been a problem except that some of New York City's Finest saw the display, and pretty quickly stepped in to stop filming. Our shooting permit was then revoked, leaving us with an unusable half a take of a very expensive video shoot!Naturally, YouTube already has the visuals.

Today's events took a different turn than planned, and I so it was that I decided to drive our house guests, Sherry and Jim, to Lahaina for dining and shopping. Jim was wearing his Cheeswburger In Paradise t-shirt from Key West, Florida--it was well-loved and well-worn with a small hole near the neckline. I decided it was a time to add to his CIP wardrobe, so I suggested we eat at the Lahaina Cheeseburger in Paradise which sits right on the water.The fresh ocean breeze blew on us as we dined on delicious hamburgers. On the menu there was a special: you could buy a t-shirt which was wrapped up to look like a hamburger with your burger, so Jim went for it. I will let the photos tell the rest of the story. The final result you will have to tune back in for on another post, but here's the beginning!
