A new study has shown that parental drinking not only directly influences adolescent drinking, but also indirectly through teens’ perceptions of parenting, especially monitoring and discipline received. Adolescence is a crucial time of development on many different levels, but especially concerning the initiation and escalation of alcohol use. The new findings highlight the impact of parental drinking and parenting practices on adolescent drinking. “We wanted to, first, examine the extent of the relationship between the drinking behaviours of parents and those of their adolescent offspring at 14 and 17.5 years of age,” said Shawn J. Latendresse, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioural Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University, and corresponding author for the study. “Second, we wanted to determine how much of that association was due to parents' drinking behaviours affecting their a

Adults often tell children,”Grow up.” Perhaps one of the wisest things adults can do is to ‘grow down‘ — to do or say something from time to time, as children frequently do, that makes little or no sense. ~ Allen Klein

Since school got out it has been marathon parenting for me around here. Sadie wanted to have several arguments with me regarding her loss of privileges over her grades and in school suspension. Then I had a conversation with Salinda that did not go so well. She is probably going to have to stay where she is for a few weeks longer than she thought. I talked to her Probation Officer who is not sympathetic at all about her plight. She was warned so many times and now she has to suffer the consequences of her actions. She is trying hard to manipulate the system and it isn't working for her. The conversation ended with her telling me she wasn't going to do something I suggested she should, and it is apparent that nobody has cured her rebellious streak. Not that I expected it to be cured, but she is slipping back into old habits. She is caught in a corner and she never likes that position. Then Jimmy came home defiant and crabby. He was expecting Bart to go to his conferences, and w

The right and wrong, and the harmless and dangerous should always be taught at a young age. Yes, these things should be instilled in children from a very early stage of their lives. By the time you were to wait till they have grown up to tell them what is right and wrong, it would have been too late for you and especially for them. Therefore, parents have to make it a point to take good care of the children. Parents are the key people whom they learn everything about life from, so you as parents should not take that role of yours for granted. One of our articles that once gave a reflection to us on parents who took their babies for granted and even consumed them as their daily diet is the one we had posted earlier on about the perils of an unborn baby. These are the tips that can help you take care of your children’s safety and well being effectively:Do Not Leave Them Alone1. At such a young age, you ought to be around them at all times. If not you, at least another trusted adult, part

Hi, my name is Claudia and I'm a control freak. It's been 58 minutes since my last "control freak' episode.Parenting teens is difficult when you're a control freak because you can only control teenagers to a certain extent. Being an adoptive parent to several kids with mental health issues and a pastor's wife simultaneously can be a very difficult endeavor. It's a good thing that I've never been a person who cared much about what other people thought, because this would kill me.This morning, I'm sitting in church in the 4th row behind Dominyk who declares, too loudly for my liking, that he "hates communion." A few minutes later Salinda goes up for communion and I realize that she has taken the skirt that I almost didn't buy because I thought it was too short and cut it even shorter. The alteration job was quite ammateur and it looks terrible. And of course this is the week where we stand at the alter while communion is served so that everyone had a good 2 minutes to stare

Dear Readers,
What is Equally Shared Parenting(ESP)? Amy and Marc Vachon, creators of the website Equally Shared Parenting, describe it as: the purposeful practice of two parents in an intact home sharing equally in the domains of childraising, housework, breadwinning, and recreation time.
Could an ESP arrangement work for your family? Of [...]

4 Rs of Effective Parenting
Children who misbehave are a source of endless frustration to their parents who are constantly faced with a choice of punishing them or giving in. Many parents do not know what to do with children who are often unco-operative, inconsiderate, noisy, petulant, irresponsible or defiant.
Advice to parents are mostly obtained [...]
Let me start this off by admitting I’m a bad parent myself. Every day I try to figure out where the line is between protecting my children and forcing them to grow up, between goofing off and setting a bad example, between spoiling them and being good to them. I’m constantly erring on one side or the other, but I only find out when it’s too late. How can you be a perfect parent? By the time you figure out how to do it, it’s already done. Somehow most kids manage to grow up anyway. The mistakes we make along the way may be good for a few laughs, if nothing else. KidStoned Peyton Manning for the United Way. (Thanks, Jan!) A baby is playing with a cobra, and the adults are giggling about it! It’s a family of snake charmers, and the cobra is defanged, but still... I’ve heard snakes can grow their fangs back. Uniqueness is a virtue which is rarely found. This post done not claim to be unique but yes, this post about Attachment Parenting is not stale and repetitive and you won’t waste your time reading it.If you think that gathering information is all to post writing then any statistician would have been a great post writer. It is all about arranging what you know and that is what I have done here in this post about Attachment parenting.Attachment parenting (AP), a phrase coined by pediatrician William Sears, is a parenting philosophy based on the principles of the attachment theory in developmental psychology. According to attachment theory, a strong emotional bond with parents during childhood, also known as a secure attachment, is a precursor of secure, empathic relationships in adulthood.Attachment parenting describes a parenting approach rooted in attachment theory. Attachment theory proposes that the infant has a tendency to seek closeness to another person and feel secure when that
Sorry China, my review is still pending. But I frickin' love the book! So here, I'm reposting this other review just for you. Come visit us again sometime. We're still here while you're shooting to stardom. You deserve it.The Future Generation China Martens Created Her New Book the Way She Raised Her Daughter--One Day at a TimeBy Violet Glaze If you went to a punk show in Baltimore in the early '90s, you remember Clover Martens. She was the only toddler in attendance, a wispy-haired imp in Goodwill sundresses darting in and out of the crowd of slam dancers and malcontents. Her supermodel-tall mom, China, was always with her, available for a quick snuggle or suckle but otherwise letting her daughter zip around at her own whim. There was sometimes talk that China Martens didn't have a steady partner to help raise her daughter, that her anarchist principles meant she wasn't going to enroll Clover in school or immunize her. One of two things (or sometimes both) cro
An awesome discussion group I've known about for awhile now but just got around to joining. So I'm stealing their welcome letter and sharing it with ya'll. This forum also explores how various forms of hierarchy and domination, such as the State, capitalism and patria
