BANGALORE: South Western Railway has successful implemented the system of e-payment of freight for rakes loaded at Vyasanakare Railway station, making it the first in South Western Railway. The system is high-tech freight payment system fully computerised with on line connectivity with State Bank of India Headquarters, Mumbai and Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) at New Delhi, wherein the funds for payment of freight are directly transferred from customer account to railways acount without any manual interference. The software has been jointly developed by State Bank of India and CRIS, a release said. The system would enable in quick transfer of freight to their accounts for railways and on the customer front it would help in terms of totally dispensing with other cumbrsome and dilatory modes of payment. - Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Aiming to reduce delays and bring transparency in the payment system, Railways are going ahead with the plan for e-payment for freight service. "We had launched a pilot project last year and this year, we are expanding it to the entire railway system," a senior official in the Ministry of Railways said. Freight, one of the major sources of income for Indian Railways, is collected at station where a customer books goods for transporting to another station through train. At present, freight collected from the customer is deposited to the local branch of the bank by Railways. As a result, there are delays in making payment because of the long procedures involved in the current transaction system, the official said, adding the e-payment system will reduce the delay to a large extent. Businessmen with a turnover of 4 million rupees and professionals with income above 1 million also need to pay the taxes electronically, a finance ministry statement said.
