I am sure you are wondering what two far-away countries have in common with each other and Valentine's Day. Perhaps the regular readers of this blog (if there are any) already know the answer because they can understand how I think. For all the others, keep reading until it becomes apparent to you that, indeed, Valentine's Day, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines do have something in common.

By Karen Lema MANILA (Reuters Life!) - Prisoners, supermarket workers, even the U.S. Ambassador: none are immune to the "Papaya" dance craze that is inspiring the Philippines to gyrate to its beat. "It is a silly dance," said Edu Manzano, the TV game show host and former actor responsible for making the "Papaya" a nationwide hit by featuring it on his show. "I call it silly because it does not take any degree of expertise," said Manzano, who is also the Philippines' anti-piracy czar. A clip of U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney shaking her hips, shuffling her arms in the air and pointing her index fingers alongside Manzano is a popular clip on YouTube, with more than 30,000 hits since it was posted four months ago. About 1,700 "Papaya" dances, starring children and young people, as well as Transformer toys and Ronald McDonald, have been posted on the video-sharing Web site by enthusiasts. The dance's catchy beat and steps have gri
By Raju Gopalakrishnan BORACAY, Philippines (Reuters) - It's getting crowded in paradise. About 600,000 tourists came last year to Boracay in the central Philippines, regarded as one of the world's best holiday destinations, and swam, ate and slept on an island that has only about 18,000 full-time residents. Arrivals should rise to about 670,000 this year, and pressure is mounting on the island's infrastructure as more and more hotels and resorts are built to cater for the boom. The single narrow road that runs the length of Boracay is jam-packed, drain pipes bring floodwater to the beach and hotel taps can suddenly run dry. About 10 tonnes of garbage need to be treated and disposed of each day. "It's really taken off (in terms of) congestion, overgrowth," said David Light, a retired American actor who has been visiting Boracay for its windsurfing since 1991. "It was a pristine natural environment and I hated to see it change, but it did." Three dec

MANILA (Reuters) - The United States will hold full-scale joint military exercises with the Philippines in February after drastically scaling down the annual event last year because of a row over a U.S. Marine jailed for rape. About 6,000 U.S. soldiers will take part in the exercises,, which will be held near strongholds of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the largest Muslim rebel group in the Philippines, military chief General Hermogenes Esperon said. Last year, Washington scaled down the war games, sending only 400 soldiers after a row over custody of the marine convicted of rape in December 2006. U.S. forces routinely train and advise Philippine military units, build roads, bridges, schools, clinics and conduct other humanitarian activities as part of joint efforts with Washington's closest ally in the region to fight Muslim militants. Esperon said 5,000 to 6,000 U.S. troops would take part in the Balikatan (shoulder-to-shoulder) manoeuvres in the central region of Mi
By Manny Mogato MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines has renewed an offer to communist rebels to accept a ceasefire deal as a step to restarting peace talks on ending a four-decade rebellion, an aide of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said on Thursday. But a rebel spokesman criticised the truce offer, saying the government must reopen peace talks without any conditions. Ricardo Saludo, secretary of Arroyo's Cabinet, told reporters the government "is heeding the Church's call for peace", and once again called for a truce to create an atmosphere conducive to talking peace. "We call on the rebels to accept a ceasefire that would end the bloodshed and lay the foundation for sincere, productive negotiations toward a lasting settlement of the communist rebellion," Saludo said. Active in 69 of 81 provinces across the archipelago, the communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels have been waging protracted guerrilla warfare to overthrow the government since the late
We are experts with the K1 fiancee visa process for the Philippines and K1 visa preparation. We work exclusively with U.S. clients who have fiancees from the Philippines and we have a 100 percent success rate! The Fiancee visa, or K-1 visa, is a method to get your Fiancee into America therefore that you could be married in the USA. This intended purpose of this is to allow United States citizens to bring their fiancees form other countries and marry them here. This is so that these people will be allowed into the country permanently while they are married to the citizen. Before the K1 visa was introduced, a citizen could bring their Fiancee into the Untied States and marry them as long as they already had gotten married in her foreign country. After they would marry, they would then apply for the spousal visa. The real problem with this was that the spousal visa did not give the foreign fiancee any time to adjust to the United States. Unlike marrying abroad, this allows the couple to l

Hoy traemos este artículo de The International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning, Vol 8, No 3 (2007), ISSN: 1492-3831 Patricia B. ArintoUniversity of the Philippines, Open University Abstract Several constraints influence the formation of a professional identity by full-time distance education faculty at the University of the Philippines. One of these is the marginalisation of distance education (DE) in the academy as a consequence of DE’s identification with low status disciplines, as well as with developments in higher education that are undermining traditional academic identities. There are also constraints arising from the social organisation of distance education itself. The paper offers a (re)conceptualisation of academic professionalism for distance education faculty that is more responsive to the challenges that they face, and more empowering for themselves and the academic and other communities of which they are a part. Keywords: Distance education

Recently, I met a fellow blogger from Cagayan de Oro (The city i call home) on mindanao bloggers and we got to talk about blogging, its money making potentials and everything about paypal in the philippines. As it turns out, he has been making quite hefty money from paypal and smorty from his entertainment blog since 2005! (imagine how much money is there to make in 2 years) and being curious as I am, I asked everything about the availability of paypal in the philippines and heres what he suggested me to do :Open an EON Account at union bank. EON is a debit card that accepts services online banking transactions specifically from paypal. In fact, it is the sole card that offers this kind of service here in the philippines and for a blogger's ear, there is no sweeter sound than this news. So with this, I decided to apply for an account online and after a few submission of personal infos, I was told that my card will be ready for pick up at a branch that I selected when I registered (Im

ROME (AFP) - Giancarlo Bossi, the Italian priest abducted last month in the Philippines, has been released, Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said late Thursday. "Father Giancarlo Bossi has been freed, a car is bringing him to a Philippines police station," Italy's ANSA news agency reported Prodi as saying. Bossi had managed to get a message to Italy's ambassador to Manila, Anna Fedele Rubens, saying he was fine, an Italian foreign ministry spokesman told AFP. Pope Benedict XVI welcomed the news with "great joy," said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi. Bossi, 57, is a member of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME). He was seized on June 10 in Zamboanga Sibugay in the southeast Philippines.Gian Battista Zanchi, a senior PIME official told ANSA that Bossi would be given a medical check once he had arrived at Zamboanga.Prodi thanked all those who had worked for the liberation, including the foreign ministry crisis team which had remained in constant contact with

At exactly 12:00 noon today, Philippine Rose Online was online for the last time.
As we’ve announced, Level Up will cease operations of the game for valid reasons. It’s been a good couple of years for the game and I’d like to thank everyone who had had the opportunity to play the game especially to the loyal pROSE players, most of whom are now in Perfect World.
It’s really sad to finally say goodbye to a game. ROSE was our third game (after Oz and RO) and was, for a time, the 2nd biggest MMORPG in the country. There have been a lot of managers assigned to tackle the brand and the community. Each had a distinct style on how to run it. There were lessons learned and much experience gained.
Sadly, content is really the mantra or the life-blood of any MMORPG. Without it, things will certainly spiral down. Even the best marketing efforts and the best events can only do so much.
Let’s all take a moment of silence for the legacy which is ROSE.

Sadly, we didn’t bring home the gold but Team Armada-Philippines, official RP team to the Ragnarok World Championships 2007 held at the Lotte Activity Center in Seoul, Korea, took the bronze medal after defeating Germany 2-0.
Team Philippines lost to the Korea National team 2-0 in the bid for one of two finals slots. Korea went on to battle Thailand (who defeated Germany) for the finals. Thailand went to upset the host country 3-1 in their best-of-five finals match to become the 2007 RWC Champions!.
This is the best finish yet for our country in the second installment of the international Ragnarok tournament. The RWC 2007 ends today and the Philippine contingent will fly back to Manila tomorrow, July 23, 2007.
Carlo Ople aka Waukster, reports how the inclusion of a SinX (Assassin Cross) for the Koreans turned the tide of battle for them. “Extremity Fists flew left and right but at the end of the day, the Assassin Cross of Korea made the difference as he was able to take o
Team Armada, the official Philippine Team to the 2007 Ragnarok World Championships just beat Indonesia 2-0 in their first assignment today and then went on to take down Brazil 2-1. In a twist of fate, Team Brazil, also sponsored by Level Up, meets up with our representatives in a match that would take the winner to the semi-finals (most likely with South Korea) tomorrow, July 21.
Wauks blogs about the details of the match: “The first match was quick, as Team PH’s Champion was singled out and taken down. Brazil took the early lead at 1-0. Team PH bounced back during the second round as the Champion was able to place a well-timed Extremity Fist to Brazil’s Professor, this move tied the series at 1-1. The last and deciding match was even more intense, as the two teams immediately engaged each other in a melee. However, Team PH was able to eliminate Brazil’s Professor once again”.

(ADNKI).- The al-Qaeda-linked Muslim Abu Sayyaf rebels have decapitated seven hostages and sent their heads to the army in Jolo, in the southern Philippines archipelago of Sulu. The victims, all Christians, were working on a government road construction project in the city of Parang, when they were abducted Tuesday by rebels led by commander Albader Parad. The Philiippine army said on Friday it will intensify its efforts to wipe out Abu Sayyaf. Two were reportedly teenagers, aged 16 and 17, who were working to pay for their college education and help their impoverished parents in nearby Zamboanga City. Militants had asked a ransom of 5 million pesos, approximately 105,000 dollars for them. Military sources say the beheadings are Aby Sayyaf's response to the army's offensive against the rebel group which started last August. Over 70 alleged terrorists, including Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffi Janjalani who died in a firefight in September 2006, have been killed in the offensive.More
