  • As a Tigers fan who's still bitter over the 1987 playoffs...
...Pardon me for not feeling sorry for Twins fans over the awful trade of Johan Santana.Yes, I still hold a grudge over all the nightmarish experiences the Tigers have suffered in the Homer/Baggie/Hefty/Metrodome. It's nice to revel in a little schafenfreude...But from a Tigers fan point of view, even better than delighting in the Twins misfortune is the fact the AL Central officially became a 2 team race as of yesterday afternoon. This trade is the equivalent of the Tigers getting Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, yet not giving up Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin. The Twinkies didn't even get the Mets' best prospect! The Minnesota front office out and out blew it when they didn't jump all over either the Yankees or Red Sox offers during the winter meetings. My first though about the Santana trade? GOOD RIDDANCE!I've said in the past that I don't buy the "We can't compete in a small market" BS. Have you ever known of any team owner that isn't personally rolling around in obscene amo

  • Chargers find there are catches to winning in playoffs
The Tennessee Titans based their chances against the Chargers on stopping LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates in Sunday’s wild card playoff game. That they did … but win they didn’t.So why were the Chargers able to pull out a 17-6 victory for their first playoff win in 13 years?Because once it was obvious Tomlinson couldn’t run (21 carries, 42 yards, 1 touchdown) and Gates (sprained left big toe) was injured in the second quarter, the Titans lost their game plan. They had prepared so much for silencing Tomlinson and Gates that they forgot about San Diego wide receivers Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson.Chambers had six receptions for 121 yards; Jackson made five receptions for 114 yards and the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter. And once Jackson’s catch gave the Chargers a 10-6 lead, the game was over. It was obvious that Tennessee’s lame offense wasn’t going to score a touchdown if the game lasted until Friday."It's a relief, but at the same time, it's not like we'
  • Some Football Thoughts Going out of the Bowl Games and into the NFL Playoffs
I don't see a very bright immediate future for the Tennessee Volunteers. This might seem an odd conclusion based on the evidence:- We lose a senior QB in Eric Ainge, two good tight ends, a couple of experienced defensive linemen, possibly a middle linebacker if Jerod Mayo turns pro, and a vastly overrated defensive back in Justin Harrel. Those are the main losses.- We return the entire receiving corps, the entire running back corps, the freshman defensive player of the year in Eric Berry, and two good kickers. The junior backup QB is serviceable and experienced, and some new QB's will compete for the starting jobThere are four coaches to replace, including the offensive coordinator, the receiving coach, the running back coach and the tight ends coach. None of them will be easy, and there are very few good, young, innovative OC's out there to be had. While every unit should improve next year, I don't see the talent in any of them to improve to the point of being an elite unit. The r
  • Playoffs? Not this year: 4th quarter Lions - Vikings thoughts
As we start the 4th quarter, we see the wild card race standings. Why bother, it's all a pipe dream for Lions fans.Kitna finds Furrey for 7. Brandstatter says, "The Lions have all 3 time outs!" Huh? So what?Bad snap on the shotgun, Kitna throws it away, but takes another big hit. 3rd and 3 from the Vikings 46.Calvin Johnson DROPS a slant that hit him in stride. It his him right in the hands. Lions suckitude is contagious. 4th and 3. Lions are going for it...CJ holds on to the ball this time, the completion goes for 17 at the Vikings 28.Kitna is back to pass...SACK! Ball is loose, Vikes recover. Whoop-de-fucking-do.!But it's called an incomplete pass. I don't know about that...And here comes the red flag from Childress on the Vikes sideline. Expect another 10 minute delay. It was ruled a fumble, but the Vikings don't get the ball? Huh? It must be due to the whistle blowing. No one has a clue on either the radio or TV as to why. A damn odd call. After all that, it's 2rd and 18 for the Li
  • Playoffs? Are you kidding me? PLAYOFFS? Final thoughts on Lions - Packers
I was feeling too full, thus too uncomfortable, after gorging myself on mom's turkey dinner to write last night. Now that I feel human again, rather than like a partially deflated Goodyear blimp, here's my thoughts regarding the Thanksgiving Day massacre at Ford Field. Thanks to the Lions raising expectations after their fast start, the 2007 season is now on the verge of becoming an EPIC FAIL.I went against by better judgment, putting aside the years upon years of being bitterly disappointed by the Lions, and gave them the benefit of the doubt during their 6-2 start. • Season Over: Revs Run Bulls Out Of Playoffs
As expected, the New York Red Bulls 2007 season came to an end tonight as Taylor Twellman notched a second-half goal that put the Red Bulls out of their misery. I didn't watch the game--was out of town attending an engagement party--but I read about the Angel concussion and Reyna injury. Not that the latter was difficult to predict. I can't remember the last time Claudio finished a game. The loss is disappointing, but not surprising. This team simply did not do enough the second half of the season to warrant expectations of any other sort. I thought--naively, it turns out--that Arena must have some cards up his sleeve that he was waiting to play at the right moment. Some kind of motivational ploy or...something. Outside of Angel, Jozy and maybe 1-2 others, there did not seem to be any passion at all. Too many guys just showing up and punching the clock. Granted, that is based on observations that were limited to the team's locker room after home games (I have a day job, remember?) thoug
  • MLS Playoffs: Your Predictions
Finally, the match ups have been set and the post season is set to begin. Soccer Source is curious to its readers predictions and invites them to comment here. Questions to consider: Can D.C. be stopped? Will New England recover the form they seem to have lost this past month? Who will prevail in the Texas derby shootout? Does Kansas City have a chance? Does Red Bulls? Who is poised to repeat Houston's run from 2006? Will people still pay attention without Beckham's participation? For the uninitiated (readers outside North America and self-proclaimed Euro/soccer snobs closer to home), the first round is laid out below. To purchase tickets, visit the MLS Web site. For Red Bulls tickets, you can also participate in the contests that run for another 48 hours. • The MLB playoffs have been fine. But the BS going on between innings is something else altogether....
Commercials bother me. Commercials bastardizing the music of my youth bothers me even more. The latest example being the Honda commercial that has been run often during the MLB playoffs, using one of The Who's best, if not the best, songs, "I Can See for Miles."The kids were once alright. The two left are now just rich old capitalists. That Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey are making big bucks licensing their songs to anyone who gives them a briefcase full of 50's and 100's doesn't bother me all that much, as it's their music to do what they wish. It's how the songs are being used totally out of context that gets me.Does Honda, or their advertising agency, actually know the lyrics to "I Can See for Miles?" Here's a sample of the lyrics...Well, here's a poke at youYou're gonna choke on it tooYou're gonna lose that smileBecause all the whileI can see for miles and milesNot exactly the uplifting tune about a grand future that Honda makes it out to be, is it? But the chorus, taken out of co
  • Can Padres pitchers match up in playoffs?
Since it looks like a strong possibility that the Padres will make the National League playoffs, the team might soon have to figure out its postseason pitching rotation.Of course, the rotation would start with Jake Peavy, Greg Maddux and Chris Young. After that, it’s a big question mark since current numbers 4 and 5 starters Brett Tomko and Jack Cassel are not eligible for the playoffs because they were not on the Padres’ roster Sept. 1.In all likelihood, that would make Justin Germano (who has been dropped out of the rotation), the number 4 starter. The other three all have question marks to consider:Peavy is 0-2 with a 12.10 ERA in two postseason starts.Maddux is 5-3 with a 3.47 ERA in the division series, but he’s just 4-8 with a 3.80 ERA in the league championship series.Young has been the only winning pitcher for the Padres during the last two years of the playoffs, yet he has not won this season since July.Looking at the Padres’ possible chances playoffs, these numbers are

  • Rocket Adds a Boost, but not Enough to Take the Yanks to the Moon (Playoffs)
Roger Clemens made his long awaited debut tonight and picked up the win against the Pirates 9-3. He gave up 3R, 3ER, 2 BB, and had 7K's in 6 innings. Congratulations Yankees fans but I have news for you: IT'S GOING TO TAKE A LOT MORE THAN ROGER CLEMENS FOR YOU GUYS TO CATCH THE RED SOX. I'm glad that you're excited and everything but let's not get ahead of ourselves. He just beat the Pirates. If anybody (Yankees' fans especially) think that a 40+ yr. old legend who is starting to show his age can come in, throw 6 maybe 7 innings every 5th day and help you make up your 10 game deficit you are terribly mistaken. Yes, he is an all-time great and I have great respect for him, but he's not "The Rocket" he used to be and the Yankees have far more problems than even the old Rocket could have fixed. For obvious starters your pitching sucks. Rocket can start every game. Hell, he may not be able to start every 5th game! Also, you don't really have a 1st baseman right now. Your OF is getti
  • Porter's Words Send Ducks and Wings to Playoffs
I had the pleasure of interviewing Henrik Zetterberg of the Detroit Red Wings and Samuel Påhlsson of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim a couple months ago for an article I wrote for www.sweden.se. At the end of each interview, I said, "Good luck in the playoffs." It turns out my words ended up guiding both players and their teams to the race for the Stanley Cup.Little did I know that these five words would have such an impact on these players. It was as if I opened up a new world of possibilities for both of them. Just to test my new found powers, I whispered, "Good luck winning the lottery" to my wife as she headed into town yesterday. Nothing yet, but it's still early. The two teams are battling it out in the 2007 NHL Western Conference Finals. Detroit currently leads the seven-game series by 2-1.Tags: * comedy * humor * funny * silly * hockey * Western Conference Finals * Henrik Zetterberg * Samuel Påhlsson * magic * ice * Anaheim Ducks * Detroit Red Wings
