There is a chance that a large asteroid could hit Mars on January 30, 2008. That is just four days after Pluto makes its entrance into Capricorn—and the precise day when Mars goes stationary direct while it is less than 3° from the U.S. Mars. According to the Associated Press:A newly discovered hunk of space rock has a 1 in 75 chance of slamming into the Red Planet on Jan. 30, scientists said Thursday."These odds are extremely unusual. We frequently work with really long odds when we track ... threatening asteroids," said Steve Chesley, an astronomer with the Near Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.The asteroid, known as 2007 WD5, was discovered in late November and is similar in size to an object that hit remote central Siberia in 1908, unleashing energy equivalent to a 15-megaton nuclear bomb and wiping out 60 million trees.Whether or not the asteroid actually hits Mars, its status as front page news is a synchronous harbinger of Pluto's arrival in Capricorn.

I attended a Neil Young concert at the brand new, gleaming, post-modern, purple neon-accented Nokia Theater, which opened last month in downtown Los Angeles. Popular YouTuber Nalts recently posted this video rant about the planet pluto being downgraded to 'dwarf' planet status. Nalts video opposes the announcement on August 24th, 2006, by the The International Astronomical Union (IAU), that Pluto would no longer retain full planetary status due its size being considerably smaller than other 'planet like' objects found in the same region of space. My wife and I went to the local County Fair last night. On previous nights, the fair had featured some nostalgia bands like REO Speedwagon, the Beach Boys, and the Bangles. We would like to have seen one of those groups, but last night was the only time we could go. There was instead a younger group called Lifehouse, who had a hit single in 2000, Hanging By a Moment. When the lead singer pointed the microphone towards the audience so we could join in singing the obligatory chorus from their hit song, there was dead silence. Thats probably because the average age of the audience was about 17 and Hanging By a Moment is already 7 years old. When we told our 19 year-old daughter we might be seeing Lifehouse when we went to the fair, she exclaimed, But theyre so old!
