Around fifteen South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) observers would reach Pakistan this week to monitor the February 18 general elections. The observers, who will arrive by February 15, will be allowed to enter any polling station, but will have to seek permission to enter polling stations in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the Swat Valley and Northern Areas. According to The News, accreditation cards will be issued to at least 3000 observers. Pakistani diplomatic missions have issued visas to at least 500 foreign media personnel and 400 international monitors. Accreditation Cards have also been issued to 350 foreign diplomats and 1800 local media personnel. Coordinator Rasool Bux issued cards to foreign embassy personnel in Islamabad on Sunday, his day off. (ANI)

By Jalil Hamid and Niki Koswanage KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia unveiled a $32.4 billion development plan on Tuesday for its eastern state of Sabah, on Borneo island, as the nation geared up for general elections widely expected by end-March. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi gave no spending details in unveiling the 18-year plan in Sabah, but he is putting economic development on top of his agenda as he tries to counter his waning popularity and secure another five-year mandate. "It is not the intention of God that you should live in poverty and become backward," Abdullah said in launching the Sabah Development Corridor, the latest in a series of growth corridors that are becoming the trademark of his economic model. "Sabah is endowed by God... We shall not leave it untouched," he said in a ceremony opened by traditional Borneo dancers wearing feathered headdresses and wielding blow-pipes. He stressed that development should be sustainable. Saba
But only within the margin of error. According to recent poll by the St. Petersburg Times Romney and McCain are now statistically tied after Thompson exited the race. Apparently two out of the seven percent of Thompson supporters went McCain's way. Why? I've given this a lot of thought and I am convinced that there is only one possible explanation for their defecting to McCain. They just really dig geezers. In truth I think it has to do with authenticity. Because whether or not you love or hate Thompson you have to admit that he is what he is. The same can be said for McCain. So while Romney picked up the three percent of Reagan loving conservatives that want to back a potential winner that isn't John McCain. McCain picked up the two percent of supporters that want a leader rather than a politician. End result? A tie. However with Giuliani and Huckabee tied for third place at fifteen percent all McCain has to do is siphon off enough Rudy supporters to eke out a win. And that's actually

Looks like his win in Iowa answered that electability question. From CNN:MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) — MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) — Two days before New Hampshire's Democratic primary, Sen. Barack Obama has opened a double-digit lead over Sen. Hillary Clinton in that state, a new CNN-WMUR poll found Sunday. Obama, the first-term senator from Illinois who won last week's Iowa caucuses, led the New York senator and former first lady 39 percent to 29 percent in a poll conducted Saturday and Sunday — a sharp change from a poll out Saturday that showed the Democratic front-runners tied at 33 percent. Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina is at 16 percent in the new survey, down four points from Saturday. Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico is in fourth place, with the support of 7 percent of likely New Hampshire Democratic primary voters, with Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio at 2 percent.A USA Today poll confirms this but also shows that Huckabee isn't receiving a similar boos
American diplomats in Islamabad are engaged in intense behind-the-scene talks with their Pakistani counterparts to take steps to ensure that general elections are deemed credible by both Pakistanis and the international community. According to the Washington Post, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had discussed with President Pervez Musharraf on New Year's Day the importance next month's election as a means of restoring stability in a nuclear-armed country that is also at the front line of fighting extremism. US State Department spokesperson Sean McCormack was quoted as saying that Islamabad needs to make the best use of the time between now and February 18 when the elections will be held. McCormack said the government needs to ensure that an independent media is able to operate and make sure that elections are held in a free, fair and transparent manner. US officials say they are trying to capitalise on the shock of Bhutto's assassination and the growing threat of instability to
Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Justice (retired) Qazi Muhammad Farooq today said that the parliamentary elections, which was earlier scheduled on January 8, will now be held on February 18 in the wake of the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto and the consequent violence that followed. The decision to postpone comes three day after the Commission began a high-level meeting to assess the whether the situation prevailing in the country was conducive enough to hold the polls. Expressing deep grief over the sad demise of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) chairperson Benazir, Farooq said: "Her demise affected every walk of life; similarly, January 8 elections were also affected." Farooq also said that the offices of the Election Commission of Pakistan were the most hit in Sindh, where at least 11 district offices were completely destroyed by mobs. During the meeting that was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner, the EC officials told Commission that its work
Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has urged Pakistan to hold elections as soon as possible and to restore democracy following Benazir Bhutto's assassination. According to news.com.au, Smith warned against any lengthy postponement of the election during a telephone conversation with Pakistan's Foreign Minister Inam ul Haque last night. "I conveyed the Australian Government's view that democracy and the rule of law are essential prerequisites for achieving peace and stability in Pakistan and the strongest basis for combating extremism," Smith said in a statement. "I told Mr ul-Haque that Australia strongly supports a return to democratic processes in Pakistan, and the holding of elections at the earliest possible opportunity under conditions allowing for full and safe participation." "I condemned this act of political violence in the strongest terms. On behalf of the Australian Government, I urged all parties to exercise restraint at a moment of great a
A team of international observers has arrived in Pakistan to monitor the January 8, 2008 general election. The team sent by Washington-based International Republican Institute (IRI) started its scheduled visits to Sindh starting from Jamshoro district on Monday. Initially the team met with Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur, the Pakistan People's Party candidate for NA-231, Sehwan-Kotri, who briefed them about upcoming polls. Talpur told the foreign observers that the PPP welcomed the most recent steps taken by Musharraf, especially giving up the uniform and removing emergency, and added that the PPP expected he would also hold free and fair elections. He also feared there might be rigging as the caretaker government was partisan and the state functionaries were running election campaign of a certain political party. Talpur told election observers that the PPP candidates from Dadu and Jamshoro districts have strong reservations over the state resources being used by the same party's candidat
By Richard Dobson TAIPEI (Reuters) - Upcoming elections in Taiwan, with lawmakers keen to appear firm on defence, nudged parliament to pass the most extensive arms budget in years, including funds to produce a missile that can strike China. Analysts say legislative elections in January and a presidential poll in March are shaping up as a contest over a Taiwan identity separate from rival China, which has claimed sovereignty over the island since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. Beijing has said formal independence could result in war. Last week's passage of a robust arms budget was necessary for the opposition Nationalist Party (KMT) to demonstrate to voters it is ready to retake power, according to Lin Cheng-yi, a research fellow at the state-funded Academia Sinica in Taipei. "They need to indicate to the people of Taiwan they are still responsible on national defence, but it is a pity they take so long until the last minute to pass the defence budget they tr
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed doubts about the January 8 general elections leading to democracy in Pakistan. A statement signed by HRPC Chairperson Asma Jahangir and Secretary General Iqbal Haider said the elections are being used to sideline issues affecting the fundamental rights of Pakistani citizens. “Lifting of emergency is a superficial exercise when the judiciary remains grievously damaged,” it said. The worst blow that the judiciary is an attack on its prestige, the statement said. The HRCP statement further said that the arbitrary amendment of the 1973 Constitution was also unacceptable. It also expressed deep concern over allegations of abduction of candidates by government agents, stating that such cases have not been investigated so far. They suggested that the fundamental conditions for establishing democratic traditions in society should be given priority by all pro-democratic political forces. (ANI)

Take a look at this graph of the presidential candidates poll positions in Iowa, starting with October 22, the day of the endorsement:Huckabee is in black, if you can't read the key. It appears that after October 22, Huckabee’s campaign really takes off. Hmm. Interesting.By the way: Chuck Norris doesn’t endorse presidential candidates, he ALLOWS them to be president.

She's down to within the margin of error against Obama. From Rasmussen Reports:New York Senator Hillary Clinton’s lead over Illinois Senator Barack Obama in South Carolina’s Presidential Primary has disappeared. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the race shows Clinton with 36% of the vote while Obama is the top choice for 34% of the state’s Likely Primary Voters....... Obama’s showing has improved significantly among black voters. He now attracts 51% of the African-American vote in South Carolina while Clinton picks up just 27%. A month ago, the candidates were even in this important constituency (Obama 46%, Clinton 45%). There is virtually no movement among white voters in the state--Clinton now earns 43% of the white vote, Edwards 22%, and Obama 17%. In the South Carolina survey, African-Americans constitute 49% of Likely Democratic Primary voters. The poll also notes that Huckabee is in the lead on the GOP side. Not at all surprising given the state in quest

Placing him in fourth place according to a CNN poll. Meanwhile Giuliani and McCain are within the margin of error for second place with Romney solidly in first. Ron Paul's ad blitz is having an effect and Thompson's lack of well anything resembling momentum, excitement, or organization have cost him dearly. I think McCain isn't as much gaining momentum as he is picking up Giuliani defectors as Giuliani has been making it very clear that he'll trade his values for votes. I'm betting after NH we'll see the GOP lineup pared down to the top four. Frankly I'm hoping McCain ends up beating Giuliani and Ron Paul does better than the poll estimates once all the votes are tallied in NH.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Monday dismissed polls that show him slipping into single digits, arguing that his campaign is going through the typical ups and downs and will be fine this fall.
In an interview with The Associated Press, the Arizona senator also defended his support for a bipartisan immigration bill, a stance that has undercut his bid in early voting South Carolina.
The top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee acknowledged that his backing for the Iraq war has hurt his candidacy elsewhere in the country.
“I’ve got to do what’s right,” McCain told the AP. “In South Carolina, the war doesn’t hurt me as much as in other parts of the country. It has hurt my candidacy.”
McCain campaigned in South Carolina, which holds its GOP primary Feb. 2. He also raised money with Saturday’s second-quarter deadline fast approaching and picked up the endorsement of Greenville, S.C., Mayo

Jason Cherniak has something to say about polls!Be careful about them; question them.. All of that stuff that seems to be said when polls don't necessarily go in your direction. But what happened a while back when some poll numbers came out? This:The numbers don't lie"What can we infer from these numbers? That since the last election, the Tories have remained stagnant while and the Liberals have gone up. I'll take that trend!"Come on now... If one poll is valid, another is. If one is not, then another is not.Personally, I believe polls are reasonably accurate for the most part; but only in showing general trends. When the CPC is at almost 40%, I tend to think that that it shows that support is growing, but I don't necessarily see it as being an accurate depiction of what an election would look like. And lets not forget; timing is everything. As for Jason; I think it would be in the interest of whatever credibility he has left, to refrain from flip-flopping on poll results like a Dion
