  • Managing A Portfolio in a Rational Fashion
As cross-posted on Trading GoddessThere has been a lot of discussion on this website about how to handle your investments in a difficult trading environment.Should we identify stocks that are of good value, and then buy more when they decline making their value even more compelling? Should we chase price momentum, buying the hottest solar stock or Chinese 'stock du jour'? Should we set our horizons 10 to 15 years ahead and then 'batten the hatches' as the perfect storm sweeps over us? Or should we just try to time the market and bail when it appears the sky is falling? As I write about frequently on my blog and occasionally on this website, I believe that we should probably think about our planned strategy for our portfolios before we ever buy any stocks or other investments. I know that I have spent an awful lot of time thinking about my own responses to the market and what I should be doing in response to the widest range of events. We can probably all agree that the lo

  • Using a Stock Market and Portfolio Strategy
To be an effective investor, you need a stock market plan that guides your choice of investments, the way you buy stocks, how long you keep investments in your portfolio, and when you sell. That's called an investment strategy!Without a stock market strategy, you're likely to invest randomly -- a stock here, a bond there -- without a sense of how your investments can work together to achieve the return you want and without being able to control your risks. What's more, much of the long-term success of any investment portfolio depends on the way its assets are allocated, or distributed, among the range of investment choices.
  • SAP ABAP Overview of the Report Portfolio
The report portfolio users can display an overview of the report classes and reports in their report portfolios. The menu can be structured differently for each user group. The nodes of the hierarchy correspond to the report classes. The different reports are assigned to these classes. A color is assigned to each node. This color can depend on exception conditions you define. If certain thresholds in the report have been exceeded, the appropriate reports and report classes will be colored red or green accordingly. The following graphic represents a graphical menu. By selecting a report class, you can display all the reports belonging to this class. By selecting the name of a report, you can display the pages of this report. You can then scroll through the report portfolio report. For more information see Report Portfolio.

Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting my blog, Stock Picks Bob's Advice!  As always, please remember that I am an amateur investor, so please remember to consult with your professional investment advisers prior to making any investment decisions based on information on this website. In the midst of this market 'meltdown', it is still business as usual on this blog.  My portfolio investment strategy is kicking in as it has been for the last several weeks.  As stocks decline, if they reach sale points they are sold and not replaced.  I am now down to 9 positions and could conceivably drop to 5 positions (my minimum) well below the maximum of 5 positions.I have attempted to accomplish several things on this blog simultaneously.  For one, I have been listing many investment 'ideas' that I would find suitable for purchase.  In addition, I have outlined my own ideas of portfolio management wit

Hello Friends!  Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting my blog, Stock Picks Bob's Advice!  As always, please remember that I am an amateur investor, so please remember to consult with your professional investment advisers prior to making any investment decisions based on information on this website. As we approach the end of 2007 and begin a new year in a couple of days, I thought that this was about as good a time as any to take a look at my Trading Account.  I haven't been doing these updates quite as frequently as previously because you can all venture over to my Covestor Page where my holdings and performance are summarized and analyzed and compared to indices as well as other investors on the site.In fact, I last reviewed my holdings on October 7, 2007, and my overall performance has been pretty neutral since that post. This is the status of my account as of December 30, 2007.  These holdings are listed in the alphabetical order of their trading sym
  • Recession-Proof Your Portfolio
by Annie Sorich There's lots of talk of a recession these days, making many investors nervous. What exactly is a recession? The technical definition is two quarters (six months) of negative gross domestic product growth. (GDP is the total market value of the new goods and services produced during a specified time span.) More simply, a recession describes a shrinking economy rather than a growing one.Although a downturn in market performance isn't necessarily a recession, the two can go hand in hand, as the last two recessions in 1990 and 2001 suggest. Currently there's not a consensus on whether the U.S. is in a recession, heading for a recession, or simply slowing down a bit, but it never hurts to be ready. Below are a few important steps to take when the economy turns sour.Buy, Don't SellWe all know the old adage "Buy low, sell high." Yet that's the opposite of what some people do when the economic climate looks gloomy. The start of a recession is not the time to liquidate yo

  • How to Protect Your Portfolio
By David Bogoslaw Once burned, twice shy. Even though the major stock indexes are trading at record highs and concerns about a possible credit crunch-led recession have abated slightly, many of today's investors have vivid memories of the market meltdown of 20 years ago. No surprise, then, that one feature distinguishing the current stock market from the one that crashed in October, 1987, is evidence of more caution among investors. It wasn't that way back when Gordon Gekko of Wall Street was telling investors that "Greed is good." Twenty years ago, traders in thrall to the possibilities of making money by exploiting the differentials between stock index futures and the underlying stock indexes were buying and selling without covering themselves with an opposing transaction, a strategy that would have afforded them some protection when their bets went sour.Today, they're much more likely to put safeguards in place to hedge against downside risks. Since 1987, the average daily trading vo

Because of this useful and unique aspect of Stockalicious.com, I have started to implement the site on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Student Managed Investment Portfolio website that I manage because of its ability to provide our visitors and members with real-time information concerning the performance of the portfolio. Another great feature of Stockalicious.com is the charting abilities within the free portfolio monitoring software. You can view the real-time holdings and performance of this strategy at http://stockalicious.com/stock_journal/553 Investment Strategy: The portfolio strategy was developed around the use of the new leveraged ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) that seek to double the daily performance of a particular index. The idea was first presented in the blog post entitled “Utilizing Leveraged ETFs to Simulate the Performance of the S&P with Less Risk“. The strategy is to create a diversified portfolio, which will lower the risk of the portfolio as a whole, all while maintaining the profitability of investing in an index. The goal of this portfolio is to allow a long-term investor to create a basket of securities that do not limit the upside potential of being invested in equities, while creating a cushion if the equity markets become negative. The main focus of the portfolio is for capital preservation, which is accomplished by investing in two asset classes that typically move inve
