Rumor: Two new Xbox 360 models in productionFiled under: RumorsThe blogger who famously broke the news that Bungie was parting ways from Microsoft has tipped us off to yet another internal MS situation. 8Bit Joystick is reporting that Microsoft is working on two new motherboards for the Xbox 360 to combat the persistent, but apparently dwindling, failure rates of our favorite console. Fifth and sixth generation Xbox 360's are being developed in Redmond codenamed Opus and Valhalla, respectively. In October 2007, Joystiq reported that the third generation Xbox 360, codename Jasper, was being developed for an August 2008 launch to replace the current Falcon models. The Opus is described as the "zombie Xbox 360 killer," a mishmash of working parts from current red-ringed first generation Xbox 360's (codenamed Xenon) that includes a 90nm GPU and a 65nm CPU fitted onto a Falcon motherboard squeezed into the original Xenon case, which means this console would lack the new HDMI port. • Lean manufacturing - Toyota and over production
Throughout this blog I have talked about lean manufacturing and its concept and application and even success stories and failures. All the time I have taken Toyota as the example and as the benchmark. In fact being the initiators of lean, Toyota knows their system well than anyone else. But recently I was reading a post on lean blog (http://www.leanblog.org). It compares Toyota to the GM on sales and the stock levels they maintain. The obvious conclusion is Toyota having lesser inventory since both of them have almost similar sales according to this post. But the reality is not that. Actually Toyota had more inventory than the GM. Interesting isn’t it. Does it mean that Toyota is not following their own system? At a glance it looks like.Although back in our minds have a picture of no work in progress and inventory attached to lean manufacturing, the reality is lean never talks about minimizing inventory. It always talks about inventory as a waste and a reflector of the wastes. But if

  • Eco-friendly production
More and more industries are changing to the ecological aspect of production. The main reasons behind this change are the promotion of ecological companies by the governments and the change in taste and life status of people. Ecological companies are companies producing eco-friendly products. They are promoted by the government because they cause no pollution which is a troubling problem. Today the tastes of people are different in terms of luxury and comfort. For example in clothing industry clothes and mattresses (Matratzen) made of natural fabrics like linen and cotton are meeting more demands. One reason is that they are light and comfortable. They are easy to be cleaned which avoids the use of laundry services (Bettwäsche ). They are also cheap because the government is promoting their use. In housing industry wooden materials are meeting more demands. Pre-built houses (Fertighaus ) and wooden furniture are of great demand today. They are cozy and comfortable which provides pride

I am going to discuss the first waste of lean, overproduction in manufacturing, office, software development and service contexts. In simple terms over production is producing something before it is actually required. If the manufacturer does not have the demand, they have to create it. This involves cost in the form of advertising costs, costs of discounts etc. on the other hand over production greatly reduces the flexibility of the system. If one proc

  • Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 final production review
The Alpha A700 is the highly anticipated second DSLR from Sony and the first to be entirely designed by Sony itself. Announced in September 2007 it fills a gap above the original A100 body, targeting serious enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers with higher resolution and more powerful features. The A700 features a jump in resolution to 12.2 Megapixels with a new CMOS sensor, making it the highest resolution Alpha body, and a step-up from existing rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs. The sensor measures the same size as the existing APS-C chip in the A100, so rumours of a 1.25x crop or larger didn’t emerge for this particular model. On the upside though, this makes the A700 compatible with the full range of Alpha lenses including DT models, and like the A100 before it, all effectively become stabilised thanks to the built-in – and improved – Super SteadyShot.Like most new DSLRs, Sony’s made the jump in screen size to 3in, but fitted the A700 with a super high resolution model sporting 640

  • New Low Cost Solar Panels Ready for Mass Production
A poster on the electric boats mailing list pointed out this Industry Week article... if it really comes to pass, then it would be really nice for us electric boating types :-) Of course I'm a bit leary, since it seems like there are constant predictions and announcements concerning lowering cost and greater efficiency of solar power, and then we stay about the same. Maybe this will be a good byproduct of the higher cost of oil... we'll finally have to devote more time and money to solar and other alternative energy sources. Hit the link for the entire article. US General Dan McNeill, on a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels, said he had made suggestions about what else the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) could do to NATO's top military and civilian commanders. But he insisted that ISAF, whose aim is to provide security so that Afghan President Hamid Karzai's government can spread its influence throughout the insurgency hit country, should not start destroying poppy fields.NATO officials acknowledge privately that the sight of soldiers ripping up opium crops would probably undermine their efforts to win the confidence of ordinary Afghans and turn them away from their former Taliban rulers."The fundamental principle is that the Afghans must take the lead for very obvious political reasons," added NATO spokesman James Appathurai.Afghanistan produces about 93 percent of the world's production illegal opium, the raw ingredient for heroin. The crop jumped by a third this year, helped by good rainy weather, despite international ef
