  • UK female Muslim medics protest new hygiene rules'
Muslim women training in several hospitals in England have objected to removing their arm coverings in theatre and to rolling up their sleeves when washing their hands, because it is regarded as immodest in Islam. Universities and NHS trusts fear many more will refuse to co-operate with new Department of Health guidance, introduced this month, which stipulates that all doctors must be "bare below the elbow". According to a report in The Telegraph, the measure has been deemed necessary to stop the spread of infections such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile, which have killed hundreds. Minutes of a clinical academics' meeting at Liverpool University revealed that female Muslim students at Alder Hey children's hospital had objected to rolling up their sleeves to wear gowns. Similar concerns have been raised at Leicester University. Sheffield University also reported a case of a Muslim medic who refused to "scrub" as this left her forearms exposed. Documents from Birmin
  • Karat threatens to launch nationwide protest if petrol price hiked
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat on Sunday threatened to launch a nationwide protest, if the UPA government increased fuel prices. He said this while addressing an election rally of the Left Front here today ahead of the State Assembly poll slated for February 23. Slamming the Congress party for "wrong economic policies" and "anti-people policy," Karat said people are already suffering with price hike of essential commodities and added that "non-secular parties" have taken an advantage of this and gained power in recent Assembly elections (in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh). The government should reduce import duty on crude oil instead of passing the burden of hike in crude oil prices to the people, he said. The Union Cabinet is likely to take a decision on increasing petrol and diesel prices early this week. On the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, Karat said the United States was trying to make India a "junior partner

  • Kos Doth Protest On Edwards Too Much
First, Markos calls John Edwards "an ass" for Edwards' criticism of Barack Obama for calling the Republicans "the party of ideas for about 10-15 years" and "challenging conventional wisdom" here while giving credit to Ronald Reagan, allowing infamous freeper demagogue Fred Barnes a shot to write stuff like this).Next, we have Markos citing Edwards' "stalling effort" and claiming that "this may be the last week of the Edwards campaign" if he doesn't win South Carolina (here - it's crucial I'll admit and doesn't look good at the moment, but the primary will be held on the 26th, so we'll see). In fact, Edwards has stated that he's in for "the long haul" (here, though I can assure you that I will acknowledge it if Markos turns out to be right). And also, we have this post from Markos where he alleges that Obama's supporters ridiculed the Edwards supporters, though there is no link or further information to back up that charge. All of this is starting to cause concern with yours truly, not on

  • Turkish protest to mark editor's murder anniversary
By Daren Butler ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish media lamented on Saturday the failure of an investigation into the killing of prominent Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink to shed full light on a murder which shocked Turkey a year ago. An ultra-nationalist gunman shot Dink outside his office in Istanbul on Jan. 19, 2007. Protesters planned to gather at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the spot where he was killed to call for justice. Amnesty International urged Turkey on Friday to widen the scope of the investigation and the liberal media called for the alleged complicity of security officials to be fully investigated. "Hrant Dink is in his grave, they are still at their posts," said a headline in the Radikal daily, in reference to claims that police failed to act on warnings that Dink's life was in danger. Before his murder, Dink received death threats for his articles urging Turkey to accept responsibility for its part in mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks and Kurds i
  • Tibetans-in-exile to launch protest march ahead of Beijing Olympics
Tibetans-living-in-exile have planned a march from India to Tibet to protest against the Beijing Olympics, which they say is China's propaganda to gain international acceptance to its "illegal" rule in Tibet. Five leading Tibetan organisations today said that hundreds of Tibetans would march from Dharamsala to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, on March 10, the day Tibetans would be observing the 49th anniversary of the failed uprising against Chinese rule. Tibetan Youth Congress President Tsewang Rigzin said the Tibetans must utilise the time over the next eight months to fight "China's massive Olympics propaganda campaign." "We must seize this unprecedented opportunity to have the Tibetan voice of resistance heard loud and clear by the Chinese leadership and the people around the world," said Rigzin. The march organisers have called upon Tibetans worldwide to use peaceful means to protest the Beijing Olympics. Tibetans will engage in non-violent mass protests

It ranges from verbal assaults to solitary confinement.”
  • Tens Of Thousands Of Venezuelans Protest Chavez
I was beginning to think there was no such thing as a sane Venezuelan. It's great to finally see people standing up to dictators. Tens of thousands of people flooded the streets of the capital Thursday to oppose a referendum that would eliminate term limits for President Hugo Chavez and help him establish a socialist state in Venezuela. Blowing whistles, waving placards and shouting "Not like this!" the marchers carried Venezuelan flags and dressed in blue—the chosen color of the opposition—as they streamed along Bolivar Avenue. "This is a movement by those of us who oppose a change to this country's way of life, because what (the referendum) aims to do is impose totalitarianism," said former lawmaker Elias Matta. "There can't be a communist Venezuela, and that's why our society is reacting this way."

  • Methinks Thou Doth Protest Too Much
I hate reading stuff like this (guess I’m just an old, moralistic, liberal stick-in-the-mud today).I have a question for Tara Kissane, the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for the Higley Unified School District in Mesa, AZ; did you actually ask any of the kids whether or not you should stop the production of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged),” as noted in the story? Did they appear to be confused, scared, or offended somehow? As noted in the story…The play was produced by a New York-based touring company, Windwood Theatricals. Paul Bartz, the producer, said he was surprised to learn the performance was stopped.“It's a matter of interpretation, but they're surely not seeing anything on that stage that they're not seeing on television,” Bartz said Tuesday. “You might liken it to a 'Saturday Night Live' sketch on Shakespeare.”The group's Web site says it's a “whirlwind roller coaster tribute to the immortal bard. • Thousands in Protest Rally for Jena 6
In MY opinion, this case is not black and white, it's gray, my readers and therein lies the heart of the problem. Where was this school's classes on racial tolerance? From what I have read, they have done nothing to attempt to soothe the pot of boiling racial tension that culminated in the beating of Justin Barker. In no way am I justifying the Jena Six's appalling behavior. In fact, I think they SHOULD serve some time in a juvenile detention facility as well as be made to attend anger management and racial tolerance classes. But jailed for attempted murder? uh-uh. This is an excessively trumped-up, racially-motivated charge that I don't blame all of these protesters for screaming about one little bit. READ ABOUT THIS HEREPractice non-violence in your lives. • 160 Crazies Arrested During Protest In D.C.
It would be better if they had just "disappeared". Several thousand anti-war demonstrators marched through downtown Washington on Saturday, clashing with police at the foot of the Capitol steps where at least 160 protesters were arrested. The group marched from the White House to the Capitol to demand an end to the Iraq war. Their numbers stretched for blocks along Pennsylvania Avenue, and they held banners and signs and chanted, "What do we want? Troops out. When do we want it? Now." ... Counterprotesters lined the sidewalks behind metal barricades. There were some heated shouting matches between the two sides. The arrests came after protesters lay down on the Capitol lawn in what they called a "die in" — with signs on top of their bodies to represent soldiers killed in Iraq. When police took no action, some of the protesters started climbing over a barricade at the foot of the Capitol steps. Many were arrested without a struggle after they jumped over the waist-high barr

  • Arabic Public School Opening Among Protest in New York City
To me there is a definite reason to protest the opening of this particular school since it seems to me that if a public school is theme-based, it should no longer be qualified as a public school but a private school and thus should not be funded by the United States government OR the state of New York. If the Arab community wishes to fund a school that will have an Arab-based curriculum, then it stands to reason that the Arab community should be obtaining private funding for this school. The MAS is nothing more than another front group for extremists. From The Weekly Standard: THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD is an international Islamist group that largely operates underground and behind the scenes, with branches in about 70 countries. The Brotherhood was founded in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, an Egyptian schoolteacher who--in the wake of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and abolition of the caliphate--bemoaned the sickness of the Ummah, or larger Muslim community. The Brotherhood's response to this perceived sickness was to emphasize doctrinally that Islam encompasses all the affairs of man. As al-Banna wrote, "Islam is faith and worship, a country and a citizenship, a religion and a state. It is spirituality and hard work. It is a Qur'an and a sword." The group also emphasizes that Islam is a universal faith. As al-Banna put it,
