  • Radiohead 2008 tour too expensive say critics
Giving away music for free actually has its price. Tickets for the band's UK tour are now priced around £40.00 (€64,00, $91), too expensive say critics and fans. Not expensive at all says one of the band's manager, Bryce Edge, who further added that "We don’t want to go on tour and lose money". In the same interview with "The Times", Edge also said that "It is expensive to put on the quality show

  • There has to be limits, warn Radiohead
After having had a 2007 full of good press following the 'pay nothing if you like' pricing of In Rainbows, Radiohead are heading into 2008 having to defend some eyewatering ticket prices for next year's gigs:The band’s manager Bryce Edge has claimed the £42.50 per ticket for the series of dates in May simply ensures the band do not lose money for putting on the “quality shows”.He says, “We don't want to go on tour and lose money. It is expensive to put on the quality show people expect. It is a comparable price to artists of a similar stature." This, of course, is the flipside of the shift from records to live being the place where artists make money. Perhaps Radiohead could offer a slew of different qualities of show - a Value One where Thom doesn't change his shirt beforehand and the venue only serves warm beer for a tenner?

  • Radiohead's In Rainbows Continues To Garner Reactions
Spinner recently published 2 different articles, one with Tool's Maynard James Keenan whom is skeptical about this and Hot Chip's Joe Goddard whom is supporting Radiohead, just not financially.Excerpt from Maynard's interview:"I love Radiohead," Keenan tells Spinner. "They're a great band, but I do think -- and I'll go on record now as saying I'll probably be wrong and time will tell -- what they did is a one-trick pony in a way, 'cause it might work for a publicity thing to allow people to download it, but it's very comfortable for them to be able to do that. They're going to make lots of money touring and they've already made lots of money selling records."Excerpt from Joe's interview:"I think that it was a good move on their part," Goddard tells Spinner. "If they hadn't chosen this strategy, their album probably would've leaked and then everyone would've paid nothing for it anyway." Goddard says that the make-your-own-price idea forces fans to think about the issue of "whether their

  • Radiohead Download Revenue Hotly Debated
The band Radiohead made their latest album available from their website in October. Instead of selling the album In Rainbows outright, the band allows purchasers to decide what they were worth, including the option to pay nothing. The move has been criticized recently based on an estimate from industry analysts at comScore that 60% of downloaders didn't pay anything. After comScore's report was released on November 5th the band released a statement calling the firm's figures "purely speculative" and "wholly inaccurate." The statement went on to say "the group's representatives would like to remind people that, as the album could only be downloaded from the band's website, it is impossible for outside organisations to have accurate figures on sales." However the band hasn't released any actual numbers.Recording industry executives apparently aren't particularly impressed with comScore's numbers either. In his blog Warner Brothers Records Head of Technology Ethan Kaplan asked "In what
  • Oasis pledge never to 'do a Radiohead'
Liam Gallagher - who also seems to think that Radiohead 'gave their record away for free' - has, somewhat unsurprisingly, insisted that Oasis wouldn't follow them:Specifically, he said he would allow it to happen "over my dead body".There's probably a very good reason why Oasis would choose not to sell their albums for what people felt them to be worth, as the administration in ensuring all downloaders got given five pounds would be a nightmare.Liam also enthused over how the recording sessions for the 79th Oasis album - the 78th pale imitation of the first one - is going:"There's lots of cool parts," he told Reuters. "Really, we're throwing everything at it."Hopefully our kid's [Noel Gallagher] learned his lesson [about over-tweaking things in the studio]. It shouldn't be hard making music. We've been doing it long enough."Yes, Liam, you certainly have been making for music for quite, quite long enough.
  • Lily Allen insists Radiohead isn't laying eggs
The current music industry has been good to Lily Allen, designed, as it is, to promote personality above talent, so it's understandable that anything which challenges the status quo is going to cause her some mild alarm. So it is she's attacked Radiohead for their variable pricing experiment:"It's arrogant for them to give their music away for free - they've got millions of pounds. It sends a weird message to younger bands who haven't done as well.”Except they didn't 'give their music away for free' - they invited people to pay what they felt it was worth. And younger bands might consider that the two and a half million the band apparently trousered could be a good start towards 'doing well'.“You don't choose how much to pay for eggs. Why should it be different for music?"Actually, Lily, in some places you do choose how much to pay for eggs - on country lanes you find a basket of eggs and an honest box with an invitation to pay what you feel they're worth. And it's not as if the con

  • Radiohead play coy on size of pot of gold at end of In Rainbows
Comscore's finger-in-the-air claims that about a third of people paid for In Rainbows seem to have become solidified as fact now, with the only debate whether getting more than one in three punters to pay cash for something they could get for free is a good result, or having nearly two-thirds of customers take your goods without so much as a spit in the spittoon is a terrible loss. The figure is almost now gospel, despite Radiohead's attempts to deny it:As the album could only be downloaded from the band’s website, it is impossible for outside organisations to have accurate figures on sales. The figures quoted by the company comScore Inc are wholly inaccurate and in no way reflect definitive market intelligence or, indeed, the true success of the project.Which is in itself definitive, but surprisingly lacking on substance. Of course, Radiohead could blow Comscore out the water by releasing figures themselves, but they choose not to.Which, of course, they're perfectly at liberty to do

  • Radiohead - is this the future for commercial creativity?
The music world and the online world in general is abuzz with Radiohead's decision to let fans decide how much they pay for the bands new album In Rainbows before being allowed to download it via their web site. This simple act has allowed the band to bypass the need for a record company. It's estimated, on average the band will still make about the same amount of money from downloads as they would have going the usual CD release route after the record companies have taken their cut. On average, I've read people are paying about US$8.00 for an album which you can, if you choose, download for free. It's up to you.If you would like to read a deeper article on the repercussions then Maki from www.doshdosh.com has written a great article about Radiohead and Anti-marketing in the music industy. What's clever about their decision is that it completely legalizes the free sharing of music. Something that is very web 2.0 where the new words for sharing on a grand scale is going viral. People love
  • Radiohead: beyond the rainbow
So, the download version of In Rainbows has happened; what about the physical product? The New York Times is reporting that Coran Capshaw's Side One labelette (a side-business to his management of Dave Matthews and others) and XL will release the record in the US and UK respectively. But only for a time: the band are keeping hold of the rights, so the deal will only allow the labels a brief crack of the whip. Which is only fair - after all, it's not like the labels had to pay for the record to get made, so why should they own the disc?

  • Radiohead book some flights
So, it turns out that Thom Yorke's pronouncements about stopping touring to save the planet might have fallen apart when faced with the prospect of not earning money from touring; the band are lining up a leisurely tour for 2008, says manager Bryce Edge:"We plan to tour next year," he said. "Starting in May through to probably the end of the year, with lots of holidays in that period."At the moment we are talking with our agents in North America and for the rest of the world, trying to get a schedule which works for the band and works financially."Talking to Gothamist a few days ago, Jonny Greenwood made some mumbly noises about trying to work out a way to tour ecologically, without falling into the Coldplay trap of believing in carbon-offsets as doing more than assuaging guilt:We’ve heard bad things about that. I’m not sure that that’s enough; to buy off our guilt with money. That might not be the best way to do it. We’re kind of looking at a few other ideas. It’s interestin
  • Radiohead's New Strategy: Pay What You Want
In a brilliant marketing and PR move, the British band Radiohead is offering their new album for download at any price you want. You just go to their site and fill in the blank. I paid 1.25 pounds for music I wouldn't have otherwise bought, just because I could. This is a great innovation for artists who usually receive a small royalty for each album sold and make most of their income from concerts. Terra Bite, a small coffee shop in Kirkland Washington, has a similar model in which customers can pay whatever they want for lattes and muffins. However this strategy is ideal for digital music which must have very low marginal cost. While the recording industry is trying as hard as possible to get their customers to hate them, e.g. suing college students and putting bothersome copy protections on their products, artists are finding better ways to market themselves. Madonna signed with a concert promoter instead of a record label and Yahoo! Music General Manager Ian Rogers recently promise

  • Radiohead of state
You'd have thought with the recording industry having the ear of the lawmakers in DC, everyone would be over the implications of that not-quite-historical Radiohead download experiment. The Washington Times discovered it's not so:White House deputy press secretary Scott Stanzel said that while he does not own any Radiohead albums, he is an "appreciator" of their music.Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the National Security Council, said he is "90 percent sure" that he has a few Radiohead tunes on his iPod.When asked if any of those songs were from their 2003 album, "Hail to the Thief," which some consider a reference to President Bush, Mr. Johndroe said, "not that one."And what about press secretary Dana Perino, the No. 1 mouthpiece for President Bush?"I don't even know what that is," she said, when asked. "Is that a band?"Surely if Johndroe isn't certain he has Radiohead on his iPod, he can't be certain he has the proper licences to own the content. Isn't it time he was arrested or somet
  • Radiohead - In Rainbows
Before I get started i'd just like to say that this will be the last post for a week or so as i'm going on holiday on Monday. but I'll Be Back... .So today's post. Radiohead. Your probably sick of reading about this band by now, it seems almost every blog across world has had something to say about them and the groundbreaking release of their new material. But for what it's worth i'm putting my two pennies in.. . As we all know Radiohead made their new album, "In Rainbows", available for download for whatever price you were willing to pay for it. Upon the anouncement it caused a media storm and the profile of the band was raised tenfold. I don't mind telling you that I actually paid nothing for the album...My reasoning? Well, to me mp3's and downloads are a vehicle for promoting bands and artists. I decided that if I like and enjoy listening to the album, I will, like with other records, purchase the hard physical copy when it is released. But the question is, is it any good?.And the a
  • The canny men of Radiohead
In a response to the criticism of the lowish bitrate of In Rainbows, Jonny Greenwood has tacitly acknowledged the online hoopla was intended really as promo campaign for the definitive, physical item:I don't know, we talked about it and we just wanted to make it a bit better than iTunes, which it is, so that's kind of good enough, really. It's never going to be CD quality, because that's what CD does."Now, since "you shouldn't encode at a CD rate because the CD will get jealous" isn't a line of argument a grown-up would essay (besides, distribution of digitally encoded music files is also 'what CD does' - and yet that didn't stop In Rainbows being digitally encoded and distributed online, did it? - we can only assume this is a slightly veiled way of saying "sure, we're not going to give it to you in CD quality because we want to sell the CDs". In other words, the ground-worryingly historic opportunity the band offered fans was to decide how much they'd pay for an advertising campaign,
