Today is going to be a long run for my friends and I at Team in Training so I decided to make a nice, carbohydrate-heavy dinner for us last night. Hilary, Nicole, and Tracy and I have been running together for months now and I promised them a fabulous dinner. The first three dishes were:Spicy BBQ Chicken: I used only chicken legs since I'm a big fan of dark meat and I started them off on the grill but finished them in the oven. I also grilled some pineapple to serve with it.Purple Apple Slaw: One of my favorite recipes to serve to guests. It's just a gorgeous color and always a hit!Absolute Mexican Cornbread: This time, I only used Cheddar since I didn't have Monterey Jack but I prefer the recipe as is.Then, for the last two, I didn't use a recipe (sorry...) so I'll give a description.Curried Potatoes: Potatoes are boiled till tender and cut into large dice. They are sauteed with some minced onion, cumin, tumeric, and curry powder. Season, then top with fresh cilantro.Asian Broccoli P
Yep, it's that time again, time for "El Encierro" (literally, "the enclosing") or, as it's more-commonly known, "The Running of the Bulls" at the Fiesta of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. This tradition dates back to the end of the 16th century. You might know that hundreds of young (and sometimes not-so-young men) try to outrun six bulls as they make their way from the corrals on the outskirts of town to the Plaza de Toros. What you might not know is how far and how fast these bulls run.The course is 850 meters long. Today's encierro was covered by the bulls in a time of 2 minutes and 46 seconds, the equivalent of a 2:36 800m run, or a 5:14 mile. That's right, folks. These are 1,422 lb. bulls running at a pace that's faster than many well-trained high school middle-distance runners! It's no wonder that most people are unable to outrun the bulls and so they have to earn their rite of passage into manhood by nearly being trampled to death. And that's no bull. From Yahoo News:NEW YORK - Ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes will attempt to break the world record by running more than 153.76 miles in 24 hours on a treadmill in Times Square. This is what happens when runners lose their minds from overdosing on endorphins.Seriously, though, it's for a worthy cause. Karnazes is raising money for Athletes for a Cure Foundation, an organization devoted to funding prostate cancer research.Yahoo also indicted that Karnazes' "next goal is to run 4,200 miles across North America in the spring."I wish Mr. Karnazes the best of luck. I also recommend that he search this site for a reputable psychologist.

Ross Roley at Baseball Analysts discovers that base runners are much too conservative in trying to advance an extra base based on the break even probabilities of doing so. They need a nearly 100% probability to advance, when a much...
