Well it is official... We have worn out the threats of being good or Santa won't bring gifts. The kids don't even flinch anymore when we tell them to knock it off or Santa will leave them coal. You have no idea how tempting it is to put a lump of coal in each of their stockings to see their faces on Christmas morning. Afterall don't all the parenting books tell you to make good on a threat if
  • Above the Fold: Captain Billy is sailing Michigan straight into irrelevancy
It's been utter Detroit Tigers hysteria in both the MSM and blogosphere over the past two days, for good reason. The Tigers pulled off a coup of immense proportions with their acquisition of Miggy and the D-Train, from a team standing on a Nashville street corner, with their pockets hanging out of their pants, claiming they're totally destitute, the Florida "Build us a stadium, or we'll field an AA team every season" Marlins, for every Detroit farmhand not named Rick Porcello. It was a monster stroke of genius for a GM that seems to come up with stokes of genius on an hourly basis, Dave Dombrowski.Unfortunately, they are having a stroke, with no genius involved, in Ann Arbor this week. A huge clusterfuck of immense proportions is occurring with the University of Michigan football coaching search.Dave Dombrowski knows what he wants, makes a plan, then implements said plan with decisiveness and speed. Michigan AD Bill Martin, on the other hand, in the middle of his school's most importa

With the growing need to save fuel, do you think we'll see more of this? Football field-sized kite powers latest heavy freight ship A kite the size of a football field will provide most of the power for a German heavy freight ship set to launch in December. The Beluga shipping company that owns the 460-foot Beluga said it expects the kites to decrease fuel consumption by up to 50% in optimal cases as well as a cutback of the emission of greenhouse gases on sea by 10 to 20%. Interestingly, the ship will be hauling windmills from Esbjerg, Denmark to Houston, Texas. read more

  • John's Sailing Web
I ran across this site from a pointer on Mad Mariner forum post concerning med mooring. John has a great article on the do's and do not's of med mooring, but more so, he has a great web site concerning his boats, travels, sailing and nautical things in general. This is a site where you can spend a lot of time.

I bought "Liars" on Tuesday. It's good. They're calling it their rock album... Read the last post. I can see what they mean. Some of the songs are catchier, but there's still a lot of oddness to take in. I'm digging it. There's some good songs, but, overall, it comes off more as a CD of individual songs rather than an album. Perhaps that's to be expected. That's definitely more straightforward rock 'n' roll to throw a bunch of hot cuts out and call it an album instead of doing the elaborate concept thing. Blah. I'm losing my train of thought. Basically, there's some good songs on here... But it's not the album that "Drum's Not Dead" was. Or even "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned." I'm not saying that "They Were Wrong..." was better, just that it definitely feels more like a complete album than this one. With that said, I'm going to go rock out to some of the new songs from "Liars" again. And my apologies to anyone who was put off by that picture in my last post. It's just hilarious that th
  • S/Y Linnea - A blog about sailing a 36 ft sailing boat with junk rig
This site is about sailing a 36 ft junk rigged boat. We just need to finish a couple of things first... This is a nice little blog about a Swedish family fixing up a sailboat and taking her out... the boat is a MacNaughton Crown Jewel 36' boat. Some good details on the sail and tackle, and some nice stories of their adventures. From the sounds of it, they're having fun!
