A new study by a team of Spanish scientists has warned that the level of the Mediterranean Sea is rising rapidly and could increase by up to half a metre in the next 50 years. According to BBC, the study, entitled “Climate Change in the Spanish Mediterranean”, was conducted by the Spanish Oceanographic Institute. The study stated that the levels of the Mediterranean Sea have been rising since the 1970s, with the rate of increase growing in recent years. In fact, the sea had risen between 2.5mm and 10mm (0.1 and 0.4in) per year since the 1990s, the study said. According to the study, if this trend continued, it would have very serious consequences in low-lying coastal areas, even in the case of a small rise, and catastrophic consequences if a half-metre increase occurred. A new study using satellite measurements has revealed that thick Arctic sea ice older than nine years, had all but disappeared by 2007, because of global warming. According to a report in Discovery News, this older ice is giving way to thinner ice which is only two or three years old. In fact, the new ice now accounts for 58 percent of the ice cover -- up from 35 percent in the mid-1980s. "The thinning is consistent with long-term warming," said ice researcher James Maslanik of the University of Colorado in Boulder. The thinner ice that's now dominating the Arctic is more vulnerable to ridging - the crumpling into ridged rafts of ice - or melting, said the report. Either way, there will be more open water, which can absorb summer sunlight and warm up the Arctic even further, the report added. Ecologists have predicted that the Bering Sea, which is one of the world’s most productive fisheries, would be unsustainable by the year 2100 because of warmer ocean surfaces with increased levels of carbon dioxide. Experiments done by researchers from University of Southern California (USC) also point towards the fact that the ecosystem in the Bering Sea would change considerably by the next century. As part of the experiments, the researchers collected the algae samples from the Bering Sea’s central basin and the southeastern continental shelf. “The experiments we did up there definitely suggest that the changing ecosystem may support less of what we’re harvesting—things like pollock and hake,” said USC marine ecologist Dave Hutchins.
