Fusion food is so popular these days and yet I haven't seen any restaurant with Russian Chinese food. I know it exists too because a close family friend, that I call Grandma Olia, grew up on the border of China and Russia. She speaks Russian, Chinese, and English fluently.Grandma Olia is a second mother to my mom, and she taught her how to make this Russian Chinese Oxtail Soup. I enjoyed this soup frequently as a child and when I got sick this weekend, my mom brought over a whole pot of it. She knew it would make me feel better.Sadly, my mother doesn't have written recipes for anything, but this rustic soup is simple: oxtail, onions, carrots, celery, cabbage, canned beets, and a bit of canned tomatoes.
Click here to listen. This week on our Golf for Beginners podcast, we discuss why the recipient of the 2008 Bob Jones award was selected. George H.W. Bush, Sr. not only embodies the spirit of the game but his ancestors have long been intertwined with the USGA, offering the former President of the U.S.A. the ability to follow in the footsteps of his patriarchs.Earl Woods would have been another great choice for the Bob Jones Award. The First Tee National Academy hosted it's inaugural project at K-State, home of Woods' National Youth Golf Academy. We remind our listeners of the importance of the nine basic principles that all selected youth are taught at the First Tee Program. I'm sure that Tiger Woods has these ingrained in memory and will pass them along to Sam Alexis. Finally, we discuss the book, "Chicken Soup for the Woman Golfers Soul". Where it's certainly inspirational, there are points which miss the mark.Happy New Year to all of our readers and listeners. We'll be back next week

For a short period of time while I was working at an investment firm in San Francisco, I decided to start making and bringing lunch for some of my co-workers. I don't really know why, but I ended up with 5 or 6 regulars who paid me 5 dollars to bring them in whatever I made, once a week. So every week I would go around and double-check that these crazy people still wanted my meals, and would then go shopping and get the ingredients that I needed in order to make a meal that left over enough leftovers (can I say that?) for the whole group. These weirdos actually liked this service, some even tried to convince me to do it every day. Seeing that this was something that I was doing for fun and because I like to cook, it didn't end up being a career move for me. So, I did for a few months, and then I changed departments and... well, it fizzled away. But the reason people liked it and wanted me to keep going was because of the fact that it was a great feeling to have home-made, fresh meals de

It's fall season and I love it! All the warm colors: the vibrant red and orange warm up our mind and spirit while the weather is starting to become chilly. It's the perfect time to become a child again (if you were ever a grown-up anyway) and run into the falling leaves. At this time of the year, near Halloween I always got nostalgic of my years in California where at every single cross sections pumpkins patches open, and all homes are decorated with carved pumpkins. While visiting my parents in the Northern-West part of France, I went to help my mother to get her weekly AMAP basket. AMAP (Association pour le maintien de l' agriculture paysanne) is a French nationwide association promoting sustainable organic agriculture. My parents are members and each week they got a basket full of organic vegetables grown nearby so no outrageous amount of gas are used (because everything is coming from not too far away of consumers' homes). In her basket my mom got carrots, leaks, cauliflower, spina

After she gave birth in May, she used the Cabbage Soup Detox Diet to help her shed the pounds and tone up."I went on the cabbage soup diet which is a detox diet, and it is definitely all about high protein and low carbs. And I started working out at the gym with my trainer 10 days after the birth - five days a week for two hours every day. Today I went to MCDonald's and ate two cheeseburgers. You have to treat yourself every now and then." A week ago my mom picked up four pounds of lamb for me at a butcher in Long Island. Because he butchered an 8-pound piece for me, I ended up with two beautiful shanks. After attending my cousin Riva's wedding last night, and because our brunch plans fell apart, AND (for the real reason) because Jessica wasn't feeling well, I decided to make some lamb stock, which would end up in homemade (the best kind) Italian Wedding Soup.First I sauteed the shanks with salt and pepper in extra virgin olive oil in a large stock pot. I let them go for a good 15 minutes, during which time I added 1.5 roughly chopped onions and 3 cloves of garlic. I then caramelized half a can of tomato paste before deglazing with low sodium College Inn chicken broth. I filled the pot with water and added two roughly chopped carrots; two bay leaves (broken in halves), a tablespoon of peppercorns, and a large handful of fresh dill. After bringing it to a boil, I let the stock reduce for about three hours. Towards the
I wanted soup on Fri since it was pretty cold and rainy. I decided to try the Soup Man Soup Man, 1 block from my office, and as soon as I noticed the prices, I wished it wasn't raining so I could motivate myself to walk further for lunch. I resorted to a cup size vegetarian soup, the cheapest thing they have. It came out to $5.36 for 8 oz of soup, bread, and a choice of banana or a tiny apple. The Lentil Soup was good but not good enough for those prices. I tasted the Tomato Wild Rice and it was way too sweet. The meat and seafood flavors go into the $7-10 range for a 16 oz, the size I normally get from anywhere else. I just had 16 oz of Seafood Gumbo from Food Exchange (on Broadway, can't find a link or address for them) for under $5 a few days before. I will never go to Soup Man again! Total rip-off!
My quick impression on blogging. A blogger isn’t supposed to show any vivid emotion, just be on a steady stream, float along so to speak according to a couple of recent insights in the below post. So I’ve decided, as of today, to moderate all comments. That’s not to say that I’ll be screening everything, and chickening out of replying to each one, but I won’t tolerate anonymity. I believe that if a person has something to say, then they back it up, not hide like a dog with its tail between its legs. The other thing that stymied me is how a completely anonymous comment found its way via Typepad when email address authentication is mandatory, which is what I’m waiting on. I figure, and it’s only logical, that if I’m paying for a service, then that service needs to operate the way it’s supposed to operate. Am I...
Table of contents for Spicy Mexican Potato SoupSpicy Mexican Potato Soup Pt.2Spicy Mexican Potato Soup After adding the rest of the water you can add some salt. And then you can check the soup every so often. And if the water starts to boil down a little bit, then you can just add some more water or the water will soak up in the potatoes. And you want to cook the soup for about forty to forty-five minutes.
About 40 minutes later
When the soup is almost finished you get to add the very last ingredient, which is the cheese. Muenster cheese is the cheese that I like to add because it’s got a nice consistency and it melts into the soup. So you just cube the cheese. And I like a good amount of cheese in my soup. So right here I’m using now about a three-quarters of a block of cheese. So it’s been forty-five minutes. The soup is cooked fairly; the potatoes are nice and soft. I’m going to add the cheese, the very last part. So start by turning off the fire completely. And then just ta

So probably about 10 minutes. So then you want to cut the jalapeno in four places all the way up to the stem and then chop it very finely. You can keep the seeds in the jalapeno, which is how I like it, so it’ll give the soup just a little bit more flavor and spice. But if you’re not a spicy food person you can take the seeds out. Then you wanna cook the jalapeno in the soup. Then add the garlic. Or actually add the garlic; stir it two or three times. Then you wanna add the tomatoes. Stir and fry the potatoes in there for about a minute. And then we’ll add

The trouble for Vonage does not seem to be coming to an end. According to 'The Associate Press' Vonage is in troubled waters with a religious discrimination lawsuit being filed against this popular VoIP carrier. This incident has once again brought forth this excruciating question: how sensitive the management & the top notch managers are to the needs of their employees. With all the public relation executives being taught time and again the importance of employee relations it seems like the concept exists only in theory and is yet to be applied in real-life business scenario. Hopefully with Vonage being taken to court other companies would tighten the noose.

Today class, we're going to learn a new acronym...NPPES; and yes, there will be a quiz later!
It all began with HIPAA... You know that one - Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996
HIPAA said there needed to be a standard unique identifier for health care providers, and voilà the NPI was created. That's National Provider Identifier should you need a refresher.
If you want to view or update your NPI data or create a Web login for an existing NPI, well then you need... NPPES! Now pay attention class, you'll need to know this for the quiz later - it stands for National Plan & Provider Ennumeration System.
NPPES collects identifying information on health care providers and assigns each a unique National Provider Identifier - NPI.
There's also an NPIPlanID, but that's for covered health plans and we won't be covering that in this lesson.
That's it for today, but your homework assignment is to read more about NPPES:

Here's an interesting study reported on in the April 14,2007 issue of Appetite.Researchers at Penn State investigated the effect that eating soup prior to a meal had on subsequent food intake during the meal. For one day a week for 5 weeks, 60 adults were given different forms of soup before eating lunch. The types of soup included broth and vegetables served separately, pureed vegetable soup, chunky-pureed vegetable soup and chunky vegetable soup. Results were quite interesting.Participants ate 20% fewer calories at each meal that followed eating soup, regardless of the type of soup eaten. For those who want to cut calories...let them eat soup!
