A QUT medical physics researcher has devised a new non-invasive diagnostic technique that can help in quick and painless detection of surface cancers. The technology, developed by Jye Smith from QUT's School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, is currently employed by gyms to calculate body composition. Smith has developed this new diagnostic technique using bioimpedance spectroscopy to diagnose cervical and skin cancers. Bioimpedance measures the electrical characteristics of biological tissue and is used by gyms to calculate amounts of lean tissue, water and fat. "It has only recently been applied to biological tissue to determine healthy, cancerous or dead cells. It offers the possibility of a simple device that can be run over the surface of the skin or internal organ that can quickly, cheaply and accurately record changes in cellular structure that point to cancerous changes," said Smith. Wallstrip published a great newscast heralding, with some disbelief, that Microsoft's stocks had just reached a 5 year high. "Luxology is a key provider of outstanding software for 3D content creation," said Rob Cook, Vice President of Advanced Technology at Pixar. Microsoft announced their new surface computer today (actually yesterday- it’s after midnight) at the D: All Things Digital conference in San Diego. Be interesting to see what sort of applications can be made to utilize this new technology.
In a press release issued by Microsoft Tuesday, the announcement of the first commercially available surface computer was made.Expected to be released late this year, Surface will first appear in places like Casinos and hotels.“With Surface, we are creating more intuitive ways for people to interact with technology,” Ballmer said. “We see this as a multibillion dollar category, and we envision a time when surface computing technologies will be pervasive, from tabletops and counters to the hallway mirror. Surface is the first step in realizing that vision.”Surface also has the ability to recognize physical objects equipped with id tags. Examples noted in the press release include usage in restaurants.
