  • Employee Motivation, Don Imus, and: Team Building: Five Secrets to Creating Successful, Motivated Teams
Don Imus, a shock jock (someone who shocks their listening audience by saying outrageous statements), was fired from his jobs on WCBS radio and MSNBC television for crossing the line of decency and making racist and sexist remarks regarding the Rutgers University women's basketball team. From a team building and employee motivational point of view, there are tidbits of motivational wisdom to be learned from this situation. First, let me ask you, how many "Don Imuses" do you have in your organization, your team, or your department? You know what I mean, the employees, whether they are women or male employees, who continuously cross the line when it comes to behavior; perhaps being overbearing or the bully at work. They make insensitive comments without respect for other people's feelings, and then say the following when you discuss their conduct: "I'm just being me." "That's just the way I am." "I was just playing." "I didn't hurt anybody." "Oh, you're just too sensitive." "Can't
  • Offshore Software Development with Different Teams
Couple of years back or we can say in early nineties it was something that software development can be done with a Software development Company solely at one place. Now it is changed and different teams are working from different places on entire projects and never meet face-to-face. The fact that is still challenging is that it hasn't reduced the risk and complexity involved in successful project delivery in spite of reducing the frequent-flyer balance of today's developers.Global development and delivery (GDD) is most fascinating short tem aspect that is consistently keeping management to think of the same. Companies in software development using GDD as a competitive variable; most IT organizations know what benefits to expect from GDD. They usually are less sure about how to achieve them. Still, that hasn't affected the speed of GDD adoption. Frequently, software development demands force IT organizations to take on GDD before they can establish strategies and platforms for success.

  • Inter, Roma, Barca, Seville Join English Teams In Champs League Round Of 16
Solid performances by Inter Milan, AS Roma, Barcelona and Sevilla saw the four teams through to the round of 16 on the penultimate match day of UEFA Champions League group play. Meanwhile, Rangers blew a chance to clinch passage to the next round by losing at Stuttgart, who had absolutely nothing but their pride to play for. Walter Smith's side now host Lyon in a winner-take-all game at Ibrox Dec. 12. The good news for Rangers fans is they will advance if the game ends in a tie, by virtue holding the tie-breaker after beating Lyon in their first meeting.Today's Barca-Lyon game was a good one, as expected. I was able to watch follow all most parts of it on the Internet and thought Lyon had a lot of fight and put on a solid showing. Juninho and goalkeeper Rémy Vercoutre impressed me in the little that I saw of the game (I didn't catch any of the goals). Lyon came back from goals down twice and it felt like the tie was a fair result.I don't know what happened to Rangers other than what I
  • Rescue Teams Battle Ukraine Mine Fire, 70 Dead
DONETSK, Ukraine -- Rescue teams battled a tenacious fire in a Ukrainian colliery on Monday as they strove to locate 30 miners missing underground after a methane blast that killed at least 70 miners. Distraught relatives awaiting news of missing miners more than 24 hours after the accident pushed their way into the office of the director to confront officials and demand information on rescue
  • Champs League: Man U, Arse First Teams To Advance To Round of 16
Despite only managing a scoreless draw at Slavia Prague, Arsenal were able to join Manchester United as the first teams to advance into the UEFA Champions League round of 16. Man U. made quick work of Dynamo Kiev, winning 4-0 at Old Trafford. The Red Devils victory opened the door for AS Roma to advance as well, but the Italian side only managed a 2-2 draw at Sporting Lisbon (and were fortunate to make off with the point, as the equalizer came on an 89th minute own goal by Anderson Polga). Roma can settle matters if they manage just one point in their last two games (at hapless Kiev on Nov. 27 and home to Man U on Dec. 12) or if Man U beats Sporting at Old Trafford in the next round. This means the dreaded Man U visit to Roma next month will in all likelihood be a meaningless affair.Elsewhere, Inter Milan are all but through, with a five point advance on third place. Ditto Sevilla, who turned in an impressive victory at Steaua Bucharest thanks to a brace by Renato. Barca are also in th
  • (Late) Soccer Source Saturday Summary: Several Top Teams Disappoint
My apologies for the dearth of posts this weekend. It was one of those rare occasions when I was preoccupied with other stuff; an engagement party yesterday, a friend visiting and several other items surrounding the NYC marathon (no I'm not running in it but thanks for thinking I could).Anyway, the one unifying theme of yesterday's games was that several top teams turned in disappointing results. Chief among them Real Madrid, last week's #5 team in the Soccer Source Top 25 ranking of the world's best clubs. Real went down 2-0 to Sevilla, who I thought was supposed to be a team in disarray after their manager Juande Ramos jumped ship to Spurs. Maybe Real bought into that? Seville's Seydou Keita put his team up with a stunning strike 19 minutes in and Luis Fabiano doubled up two minutes later to win the game for the Rojiblancos.#4 Bayern Munich was another other top 10 club that disappointed, playing Eintracht Frankfurt to a scoreless tie at home. At mid-week, #6 Barcelona also tied a va
  • Lean manufacturing and teams – Risks involved
Lean manufacturing is a team game. Every successful implementation of lean is backed by its excellent team working culture. Stronger the teams are stronger the results. It is a dream of any CEO to have a dynamic team with excellent talent. No doubt they can change your organization too. That is why team building is a hot topic these days. But I have faced scenarios where there are strong teams and all the people in those teams are excellent individuals and they are very dynamic yet the organization doesn’t achieve the desired results. I am sure you also might have come across teams like these. But interesting question is why this is happening?Without any doubt teams are in the heart of lean manufacturing. But why sometimes they are successful and sometimes they are not? Something every organization must think about. So we will start from understanding the concept of team in lean context. In lean the team is a unit equipped and empowered to satisfy their internal or external customers

  • What the 2007 Lions can do to convince me that this version is any different from the previous 49 Lion teams
The Lions complain, much as the late, great Rodney Dangerfield did, that they don't get any respect. They say that this team is different, and our faith in them shouldn't be clouded by the lackluster results of previous Lions teams. Unfortunately for them, they have those previous 50 years of suck that prevent most realistic fans and media from doling out that respect. So what do the Detroit Lions need to do to make this fan think differently?1. Win in Washington D.C. - The Lions have never won in DC. Let me repeat that for emphasis, the Detroit Lions have never won a game in Washington D.C. They've lost in championship games, in the regular season, late in games, by blowouts, in thrillers, in snoozers. If there is any way you can lose a game, the Lions have found that way against the Redskins. They are 0 for 20 since the 1930's. You can't ignore 70+ years of losing.Win Sunday, and the Lions may find themselves with plenty of respect, from both the media and fans, come Monday. Lose, an

  • Special Teams Cost Birds
After a long wait, opening day turned out to be a disaster for the Birds. The game started, and ended with two key special teams gaffs, and in between there was an ugly defensive battle.Early in the first quarter, Greg Lewis muffed a punt that bounced around into the end zone recovered by Greenbay for a touchdown. Lewis clearly can not field punts, as he made two more near disasters on punts later in the game. He was replaced by J.R. Reed, who muffed a punt himself in the games final minute. A play that setup the game winning field goal. Lewis, who last year got Ex-Packers CB Ahmad Carroll cut by beating him for two touchdowns, should probably be cut for this terrible performance. That might sound harsh, but maybe making an example out of him could wake this group up.Donovan McNabb was just ok today. He moved fairly well, and did make some plays that resembled classic Super Five. He also threw a terrible interception, and had a few others that were luckily dropped. I don't know if the P

I tried to get Adrian Peterson to cuff Benson, but he was taken two picks before I was ready to draft him. What do you think of my team? • Smyth receives offers from 9 teams
It’s been just over an hour since the start of the UFA period and TSN is reporting that left winger Ryan Smyth has received offers from nine teams. Nine! That’s almost 1/3 of the league! TSN also said that Danny Breire has received 9 offers as well, but has narrowed it down to 5 teams. They are also suggesting that the Red Wings give defenseman Brian Rafalski an offer, but he wants the salary number that Timonen received. I doubt the Wings would pay two defenseman over $7 million. Most people expected the NJ Devils to re-sign Rafalski so TSN was surprised to see him still available today at noon. They placed him at #5 in their top 20 free agents and the top defenseman. Rafalski is 34 years old (4 years younger than Schneider) and played all 82 games this season scoring 8 goals and notching 47 assists. Plus, Rafalski is from Dearborn, MI so I bet he’d be interested in playing near his hometown (15 minute drive or so) and for a competitive team.
  • Suicide Bomb Teams Sent to the US?
From ABC News:Large teams of newly trained suicide bombers are being sent to the United States and Europe, according to evidence contained on a new videotape obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com. Teams assigned to carry out attacks in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Germany were introduced at an al Qaeda/Taliban training camp graduation ceremony held June 9. A Pakistani journalist was invited to attend and take pictures as some 300 recruits, including boys as young as 12, were supposedly sent off on their suicide missions.(snip)U.S. intelligence officials described the event as another example of "an aggressive and sophisticated propaganda campaign." Others take it very seriously. "It doesn't take too many who are willing to actually do it and be able to slip through the net and get into the United States or England and cause a lot of damage," said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, the former White House counterterrorism official. full articleIf true, at least
  • Buy or Sell: Fans Only Really Care About Their Favorite Teams
So as I'm driving home from our first victory in softball tonight I'm doing some inner-contemplation as to why TV ratings are becoming quite the craze and why they seems to keep on pointing down, down, down....it seems like all the talk. With "Build a Better Burger" from the Food Network beating out the NHL Finals in ratings (807,000 to 769,000) you know there is a potential problem. One might explain such an atrocity in such a way as: "Oh well, It's just the NHL. America doesn't like the NHL and that's why that happened." But with game 1 of the NBA Finals hitting the lowest ratings of a game 1 ever I think something may really be up.I think America may be heading in the direction of a more concentrated view of the sports world....me included. I'll admit, I didn't watch a single game of the NHL Finals and I didn't watch much of game 1 of the NBA Finals either. I think there is some legitimacy in saying that if it isn't your favorite team or something really entertaining with a
