Tiger Woods pulled off a spectacular Houdini-like escape to beat fellow American J.B. Holmes one up in Wednesday's opening round at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. The world number one came from three down with five holes to play at Dove Mountain's Gallery Golf Club to maintain his bid for a sixth successive title worldwide. Tournament champion at La Costa in 2003 and 2004, Woods reeled off three birdies in a row from the 14th to level the match before rolling in a 36-foot eagle putt on the 17th green to go ahead for the first time. Holmes, who had never previously played in competition with Woods, narrowly missed an eight-footer to birdie the last and take the match into extra holes...Read the complete golf news story
The forest department in Rajasthan has finally woken up from its slumber and plans to ban the free entry of visitors to the Sariska tiger reserve that was posing a threat to wildlife. The state government, considering the presence of several religious places inside the tiger reserve, had made entry free on Tuesdays and Saturdays for the benefit of devotees. But the measure led to increased vehicular movement, disturbing the free movement of wild animals. Wild animals were also exposed to threats of poaching and accidents. The noise and air pollution due to the movement of vehicles also threatened their existence. But now the department plans to ban the entry of private vehicles into the reserve and also proposes to levy entry fees on visitors."Private vehicles would only be allowed till the entry gate of the tiger reserve after which our vehicles - under all likelihood to run on CNG - would take the visitors to places they wish to visit in the reserve," a forest department official sa
I found this interesting little article this morning - I recommend you read the whole thing vis the link.Eight of the top 10 players in the World Ranking will play in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club this week, the only exceptions being No. 4 Ernie Els and No. 1 Tiger Woods. Despite winning here in 1999, Els has no particular connection to Southern California. But Woods is a SoCal native, and he made his first start on the PGA Tour here, missing the cut (72-75) as a 16-year-old in 1992. "He couldn't afford the plane ticket," Charles Howell III joked. "He's only about the majors," Stuart Appleby said. "He uses regular tournaments to prepare for majors, whereas most of us use everything to prepare for everything. Augusta's a long way away."Do regular tournaments not count in Tiger's world? It sure seems like they do. Woods gets sufficiently revved up to throw upper-cuts in places like Akron, Boston, Chicago, Dublin (Ohio) — you could go right down the alphabet. So his av
Now I love Adam Scott - he is an Aussie and when on song he is a very good golfer, but Tiger Woods' former coach Butch Harmon has come out today with a very surprising prediction:Tiger Woods's former coach Butch Harmon believes Australian Adam Scott is the only young player capable of giving the American a run for his money at the top of the world rankings."Adam Scott is the best player under 30 in the world by far," Harmon said of his protege."You may get an argument for Luke Donald or Sergio Garcia but I just think Adam Scott is above them. He's a truly great talent."He is the only one who can challenge Tiger Woods in the next four or five years."He's the only one I see of the young players with all the things it takes to get close to Tiger Woods," Harmon told Sky Television's Golf Night program.World number five Scott showed his class last month when he fired a record final round of 11-under-par 61 to romp to a three-shot victory in the European

He wasn't even in the list of golfers on the cut line who got paid for their efforts and went home...nope, not Lefty. He made sure that this collapse would be one for the history books. Recall the 2006 U.S. Open? I'm sure talk of that previous loss will now be regurgitated along with this mishap throughout the golf season until Mickelson returns to form, does something spectacular and/or wins a major tournament. And what about Vijay Singh who easily had the edge on Sunday but fell apart when his solid play needed to carry him to victory? Singh held a three-stroke lead with only five holes remaining...the deck was stacked in his favor! Defeated by Steve Lowery, a player who was 305th in the world rankings prior to this weekend and had a seven-year gap in the "win" column of his PGA Tour re
Click here to listen. My Odeo Channel (odeo/401119bca2a25dfb)It's easy to see why professional golfers become distracted when Tiger Woods is somewhere in the pack. If he's only a few strokes back, chances are his resolve will carry him to victory. That is precisely what happened this weekend at the Dubai Desert Classic. On the flip side, no one seems to be afraid of Phil Mickelson.J.B. Holmes' memories of a 2006 victory at the FBR Open was all he needed to maintain his purpose for this year's event. And, the claim to fame that he beat Mickelson was also a good incentive.Phil's putter let him down once again claiming that a misread putt and a few that "slid by the edge" contributed to a playoff. Although Butch Harmon has been working with Mickelson on his 150-yard approach shots, Lefty found that his golf ball wasn't as close to the hole as was Na's. That must have also frustrated him. This week on our Golf for Beginners podcast we discuss Mickelson's views from the putter. Is it better to
Not that you would know it from listening to local sports talk, but the Tigers made a huge move to secure their future success yesterday. That being the signing of Curtis Granderson to a 5 year deal, with a club option for a 6th year. With Granderson now under club control till 2013, the Tigers have one of their cornerstones in place. What's more telling about the Tigers/Granderson hookup is that no one thinks this is a bad contract. Not a single, solitary soul. The Tigers blogosphere is absolutely aglow, and gushing with praise, for both the Tigers and Granderson.Where Have You Gone Johnny Grub:Not to get too fawning here, but just about every father with a daughter should hope that she marries a young man like Curtis Granderson. At 26, it's scary to think what he can still accomplish on the ball field, and exhilirating to think of how many people he's yet to help and serve with his charitable work and donation of time. One of the game's most approachable players, Granderson is one of m
Tiger Woods birdied his last two holes Sunday to rally from a four-shot deficit and win the Dubai Desert Classic, starting his season with two victories that looked nothing alike. One week after winning the Buick Invitational by eight shots, Woods had to birdie five of his last seven holes for a 7-under 65, then wait to see if Ernie Els could catch him.Needing a birdie on the par-5 18th to force a playoff, Els hit his tee shot into the water and made bogey."To go 2-for-2, it's a pretty good start, isn't it?" Woods said. This is the third time he has started a season with two straight victories, and it was another sign that the world's No. 1 player could be headed for a big year. Woods now has won his last four official tournaments, and six of his last seven dating to the Bridgestone Invitational in early August. He also won his unofficial Target World Challenge by seven shots in December.Woods birdied his last two holes for a 14-under 274 and a one-shot victory over Martin Kaymer of Germa
Well according to some reports today everyone else might as well not turn up this year. There is no doubt that he plays the course well and is in a very rich vein of form, but golf can be a funny game at times. Here is one of the news stories I am talking about:Tiger Woods's comfort factor at Torrey Pines, where he won a record sixth Buick Invitational on Sunday, will have sent a collective shudder down the spines of his rivals for this year's US Open. The second major of the season will be staged from June 12-15 on the scenic South Course at Torrey Pines, a coastal layout Woods has played countless times since his youth. As if that was not enough to inspire fear into any would-be Tiger hunter, the American world number one says he is now playing the best golf of his life. His eight-stroke victory romp at the weekend earned him his 62nd PGA Tour title, and his 16th in just 32 starts since the beginning of 2006. The benchmark for Woods was previously his golden run of form in 2000 wh
Brandon Inge finally cleared the air with the Tigers, and spoke to the media today, much to the relief of Lynn Henning and David Mayo. An uneasy truce now exists between Inge and the Tigers, as it appears all attempts to get similar value in trade for their former starting 3rd baseman have been exhausted, and Inge has agreed to step into the super-sub, uber-utility man role.According to the Freep's Jon Paul Morosi, Inge isn't all that happy, but won't make waves.Inge didn’t hide his frustration at losing his job as Detroit’s starting third baseman – “I’m not happy about it,” he said multiple times – but said he would accept a super-utility role.“I want to play as much as possible,” Inge said. “I don’t care about the money. I want to play because I care about the game and I love playing. I can’t stand sitting on the bench. I don’t care if it’s third base, first base, catcher, outfield – if anyone needs a day off, I want to get as many at-bats as I can.Inge

This weekend, Tiger Woods implanted his name firmly among the greatest golfers of all time, tying Arnold Palmer in number of career victories achieved.Next golf legend to overcome? Ben Hogan, whose record is at 64 wins. That too will be achieved as Tiger Woods is most certainly focused decisively on his hero, Jack Nicklaus, who stands at 73 victories. Nicklaus was five years older than Woods when he won his 62nd tournament, finishing his winning streak at 46 years of age. Woods should be on his way to his 100th victory by that time. But is Tiger thinking about his place in "the record books" and the eventual toppling of Sam Snead's 82 professional wins?"My career is not done yet," Woods said. "Hopefully, my good years are still ahead of me."With Hank Haney's swing change assistance taking effect, Tiger's short-term goal is to achieve the elusive single-season Grand Slam. I love this photo - congratulations again Tiger (what a start to the year!)Tiger Woods shrugged off three consecutive bogeys while cruising to an eight-shot victory at the Buick Invitational on Sunday for his 62nd PGA Tour title. Eight shots in front overnight, the world No.1 holed two monster birdie putts on his way to a one-under-par 71 in increasingly windy conditions on the South Course at Torrey Pines. Woods piled up five birdies and four bogeys for a 19-under total of 269 to record a fourth successive triumph at the coastal venue and his sixth overall. Japan's Ryuji Imada closed with a 67 to finish a distant second at 11 under, two ahead of South Africa's Rory Sabbatini (67) and American Stewart Cink (73). John Senden (72) and Stuart Appleby (73) were the leading Australians, finishing in a tie for eighth on five-under, a massive 14 shots behind Woods. Tiger Woods says Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman meant no harm when she used the term "lynch" during television commentary about him, and he regards the issue closed as he returns to work this week. "It was unfortunate," Woods said on Monday in his first public comments since Tilghman was suspended for two weeks. "Kelly and I did speak. There was no ill intent. She regrets saying it. In my eyes, it's all said and done." Woods spoke at the Tiger Woods Learning Center, where he announced a contest for children to talk about their first "fist-pump" moment. He also unveiled a bronze of his late father, Earl Woods, which will be in the lobby of the educational centre. The world's No. 1 player will make his 2008 debut at the Buick Invitational in San Diego, which starts on Thursday. SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A survivor of last month's tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo told the father of a teen-ager killed in the incident that they waved and yelled at the animal just before it struck, a newspaper reported on Friday. Paul Dhaliwal, 19, said he, his brother Kulbir, 23, and friend Carlos Sousa, 17, stood atop a railing in front of the tiger exhibit while taunting the animal, the San Francisco Chronicle said, citing a police document filed in court. The Dhaliwals have not described the event publicly, but police have been investigating whether the Christmas Day attack was provoked by taunting. The female Siberian tiger scaled a 12-1/2-foot wall to attack them. She mauled the Dhaliwal brothers and killed Sousa before police shot her to death. The document was an affidavit filed by police to request a warrant to search Kulbir Dhaliwal's car, the Chronicle said. During their search, they found marijuana and a partially filled bottle of vodka, it said. Police hav

TIGER Woods has humbled opponents for more than a decade; made a mockery of the world's toughest courses; and forced golf's establishment to rethink the game's equipment, its tournament scheduling, even its dress code. Less well-known is the mess Woods has made for fantasy golfers. Though less prominent than the juggernaut of fantasy football, fantasy golf leagues are offered by Yahoo, ESPN, NBC Sports and the Golf Channel, among others. These leagues usually operate by the same general principles used in other fantasy sports - you draft a "team" composed of the players you think will shoot the lowest scores, win the most tournaments or earn the most prizemoney in the year, then you watch them compete against the various imaginary teams assembled by your dimwit friends. This week, as many fantasy golf leagues conduct their drafts, a lot of them are having to make up the rules as they go. Golf keeps resisting their efforts to turn it into a parlour game. Problem No.1 is Tiger.

A male tiger and female lion have fallen head over heels in love with each other at a safari park in southernmost China's Hainan Province. Both lovebirds are over two years old and live together at the Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park and Botanical Garden. The website Photobase reported that the authorities at the wildlife park had purposely put the tiger and lion in to live together since they were just two months old, in order to produce a hybrid cub, reports China Daily. The report said that the experiment is going well, but whether the pair will finally mate and give birth to a baby is not yet known. The park once matched a male lion with a female tiger, resulting in the birth of nine lion-tiger hybrid cubs. (ANI)

My cat died!
I found Tiger many years ago, when I was living in Wecock. I called her that because she was stripey, like a tiger. She was some kind of a stray/wildcat type thing that used to hang around the area, and one day she turned up crying with a broken tail. It was quite disturbing to see, as it had been knocked right over at the base, and looked like it was growing out of her buttock. It must have hurt like hell, and seeing as she didn't seem to have anyone to look after her, I took it upon myself to sort her out.

As Woods said, "She kind of shakes every time I hit a shot, like, she gets excited. This could be good."Yes, this could be good on several fronts. For one thing, it would make for great television. As if you haven't heard, Curt Schilling has let it be known on his blog what 13 teams he deems acceptable to play for in 2008. Surprisingly, the Detroit Tigers are one of those teams.Cleveland, Detroit, Anaheim, New York Mets, Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A., S.D., Arizona, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis, Milwaukee. The consensus amongst the Tigers blogging Hoi Polloi is that the signing of Schilling is something the Tigers have to explore. As a Hoi Polloi wannabe, I have to say I concur with their opinions, but for more than just the reason that Schilling is still a very effective pitcher, especially in big games.1. It would be ludicrous to believe otherwise and so, in my opinion, Johnny Miller made an astute judgment. Techniques taught to Woods by Butch Harmon over nine years most certainly left its imprints. The long rumored move finally happened this afternoon. Edgar Renteria is a Tiger! The Tigers just got better at two positions, when compared to 2006. Renteria is a better defensive shortstop than Carlos Guillen, and he's no slouch at the plate, hitting .332, with a .390 OBP, for the Braves in 2006. The Tigers merely replaced one All-Star shortstop with another All-Star shortstop.Though I would have been fine with Guillen at short for another season, I have to admit he is a huge upgrade over Sean Casey at 1st base. The Tigers are now a much better team than they were at the end of the season. (This also puts an end to the pie in the sky A-Rod talk)Yet the first thoughts I see from fans is that the Tigers gave up too much in Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez. It's the John Smoltz trade all over again! That trade was a generation ago, and we need to let it go. This is a move the Tigers had to make.
