Throughout this blog I have talked about lean manufacturing and its concept and application and even success stories and failures. All the time I have taken Toyota as the example and as the benchmark. In fact being the initiators of lean, Toyota knows their system well than anyone else. But recently I was reading a post on lean blog (http://www.leanblog.org). It compares Toyota to the GM on sales and the stock levels they maintain. The obvious conclusion is Toyota having lesser inventory since both of them have almost similar sales according to this post. But the reality is not that. Actually Toyota had more inventory than the GM. Interesting isn’t it. Does it mean that Toyota is not following their own system? At a glance it looks like.Although back in our minds have a picture of no work in progress and inventory attached to lean manufacturing, the reality is lean never talks about minimizing inventory. It always talks about inventory as a waste and a reflector of the wastes. But if

By Jui Chakravorty Das DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp on Wednesday reported worldwide sales of 9.37 million vehicles in 2007, coming in just ahead of Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp in a closely watched race for the top spot in global sales. GM, which was expected to lose its title of the world's largest automaker for the first time in 76 years, sold 9,369,524 vehicles in 2007. Toyota sold about 9,366,000 units, a source told Reuters on Wednesday. The Japanese automaker earlier this month publicly announced global sales of 9.37 million for 2007, saying it would disclose more precise figures in late January. GM said its total global sales rose 3 percent from a year earlier, driven by strong growth in regions outside North America. Still, the two automakers are neck-and-neck, with only about 3,500 vehicles separating them at a time when Toyota has been growing in the United States -- the world's single largest market for vehicle sales -- while GM's domestic market s
DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp on Wednesday reported global sales of 9.37 million vehicles in 2007, sharing the mantle of the world's largest automaker with Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp for the first time in 76 years. GM said its total global sales rose 3 percent from a year earlier, driven by strong growth in regions outside North America. The automaker said it sold 9,369,524 vehicles in 2007, while Toyota said last week it sold 9.37 million vehicles, and noted Wednesday more precise figures should be available by the end of the month. The tie comes at a time when Toyota has been growing in the United States -- the world's single largest market for vehicle sales -- while GM's domestic sales have been slipping. But the U.S. automaker has been increasing market share outside the United States, where sales accounted for 59 percent of the total tally. Since 1998, GM's global sales have grown at an average annual rate of about 1.5 percent, while Toyota's growth rate ha

Anybody remember the “motor minder vacuum gauge”? It measured the amount of vacuum in the intake manifold on a carburated vehicle. The more vacuum in the intake manifold, the less fuel being burned (and thus the better your fuel economy). So, if you watched the vacuum gauge while you drove and tried to keep it [...]

Regarding Toyota’s poster child for “green” motoring, I had never really been a fan and I’m as guilty as anyone of taking the occasional swipe at the petro-lectro hatch. Hey, it’s an easy target. With some followers who see it as a kind of four-wheeled Messiah capable of preventing the sky from falling, it’s easy [...]
The newest version of the Toyota Tundra, assembled in Texas and Indiana, debuted in February 2007, and it was easily Toyota’s best effort at making a full-size truck. However, Toyota didn’t understand [...]

NAGOYA, Japan (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp expects to sell 2.64 million vehicles in the United States in 2008, up about 1 percent from an estimated 2.62 million this year, a top executive said on Tuesday. In Asia excluding Japan, Toyota expects to raise sales by 20 percent to 1.58 million vehicles, of which about 700,000 will be in China for a rise of 43 percent, Executive Vice President Tokuichi Uranishi said.
By Chang-Ran Kim, Asia auto correspondent NAGOYA, Japan (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp will charge further into emerging car markets to achieve another year of record sales in 2008, likely cementing its title as the world's biggest automaker ahead of General Motors Corp. Toyota, already the world's most profitable and valuable carmaker, said on Tuesday it expects to sell 9.85 million vehicles in 2008, up from an estimated 9.36 million this year -- a result that is likely to nudge it past GM's sales forecast of 9.2 million for 2007. With a product line-up including the Camry and Prius hybrid cars, Toyota has attracted more customers in emerging and mature markets alike, all the while increasing profits through cost cuts and economies of scale. Stripping out GM's minority-held Chinese joint venture, the Toyota group, which includes units Daihatsu Motor Co and Hino Motors Ltd, overtook the U.S. giant in global vehicle sales last year. Toyota, valued at around $190 billion, is like

O Toyota 2000GT foi a primeira tentativa séria ao mercado dos carros desportivos, e neste caso, em edições muito limitadas. The UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd is confident of achieving their sales target of 80,000 vehicles with the recently launched second-generation Toyota Vios; which will contribute about 30 percent of its entire vehicle sales. I like the new Vios too, especially the new look. (Yaya, I know some of you don’t like the new design, it is very subjective on talking about designing thing). The car was officially launched on 19th October 2007. Prices for the Vios are around RM80k to RM90k, which is still consider reasonable in Malaysia. (Yala, this is Malaysia ma, what to do?)Just knew that they are launching their new regional parts distribution centre in Kota Kinabalu, which said to have almost doubled the existing capacity of stocking parts of their former outfit. I wish that this will help improving their after sales and maintenance service in Sabah and Sarawak. Anyone own the new Vios yet? Feel free to share your experience with us here~advertising
